How to integrate Yamaha MONTAGE and MODX with Logic Pro X

Тәжірибелік нұсқаулар және стиль

Edit: June 2023 - an updated guide to using MONTAGE and MODX is now available here:
• Yamaha MONTAGE and MOD...
--
Using MONTAGE and MODX with Logic Pro X is not entirely straightforward, as so much of Yamaha's documentation focuses on Cubase, but once you know what's going on, you can find your way around.
This video looks at setting up the synth for working with a DAW, handling MIDI channels coming from the MONTAGE and MODX, recording individual audio tracks for separate parts, using the DAW remote function and recording arpeggios.

    On the MODX: if you want to record not more than 4 stereo track in the Logic, you can go into the Yamaha performance, choose one parts of the performance and click in the name of the part, than click edit, and you can chose one of the port output USB1+2, USB3+4 and so on for the rest tracks/parts. In the Logic however, the first input1+2 is for the main input from the MODX, so start with input3+4 in the Logic for the USB1+2 in the MODX and so on. This way you can record the audio from each part/track at once, you dont have to waist your time to record the tracks individualy. Hope everybody is understand, my native language is not english. =)

    I’m using an MODX8 connected with 1 usb cable. I can record my midi tracks ok but problem is I don’t have an option to select inputs 3+4 5+6 etc when I try to record them to audio. . I only have options for 1+2. If I check my midi connection in utilities before launching logic I can see the modx connected. When I launch logic it seems to be removing the usb connection because when I check again in midi devices on Mac the modx is gone just leaving the Mac mini internal speakers and hdmi monitor visible. I’ve uninstalled the driver and installed it again. Still the same. It’s really frustrating and I’m spending so much time at it and getting no where.

You may be interested to know that I have recorded an updated and improved series of videos on this subject, which you can view here: New playlist: kzread.info/head/PLZ-i_cDvzKZlxlk9Ygg230lMr2L3sKDrw Regarding using your MOXF8 and MODX8 together, am I right in thinking that the MOXF has a USB audio interface, like the MODX? If so, I would suggest that you create an Aggregate (audio) Device in Audio MIDI Setup containing both the MOXF and the MODX, then tell Logic to use that for both input and output. You can then create MIDI tracks pointing to either the MIDI port of either device and monitor the audio separately. My newly-updated Aggregate Device video should help you on your way with this: Aggregate Device: kzread.info/dash/bejne/oauI3JqMZpzYcrA.html

    Actually For an updated version in 2021 Just record an a track and then record it to audio and delete the midi. And keep doing that and you’ll have separate tracks in their own place so you can mix and master effectively within Logic. Especially if you have different instruments like piano and drum hypothetically you could record the piano record it to audio and then use the same track and switch to a drum kit within montage with no problem I learned this a few hours ago.

(and make them sound according to the selected Performance on the MODX) So e.g track 1 I want a piano, track 2 a bass, Track 3 a pad. It just seems to happen that when you select a performance on the MODX, this applies to all tracks in logic. What is the trick ? Must be so simple but I just don't get it....

    You have eight slots in the modx 1-8 and you choose an instrument for each slot. To get you daw to play each instrument separately on midi you have eight midi outs with channel 1-8. Modx 1 = piano Midi channel 1 = piano Mod2 2 bass Midi channel 2 = bass And that's all you do.

    Is it possible to use MODX, use it´s instruments on different Logic Tracks, and save, and when you reset the project; does it automatically load the used different Modx soundbanks? Or is it entirely based on audio recording from the MODX? In other words, all sounds that you want to use needs to be rec as audio to different audio tracks in logic? please answer.

  • @KierDarby

    @KierDarby

    3 жыл бұрын

    That’s a complex question with various ways to answer. Firstly, the MODX Connect plugin will restore all the performance settings of the MODX when you load in the project, so as far as loading in the correct sound banks when you load or reset the project, that’s totally covered. I’m not 100% sure what you mean about the audio tracks, but if you consider that the main transmission format is MIDI, you don’t strictly need the audio routing through Logic at all until your project is all but finished and you want to apply Logic effects to MODX audio tracks.

    Kier Darby let’s say, I’m making a beat. I use a piano from modx, and a drumset from modx. I record a drum loop and a piano loop. When I rec the piano, do I have to, or am I forced to rec it as a audio file? That was question number one. Question two is following. Let’s say for instance that I recorded these piano and drum performances and save the project. Next time I load the project, as far as I saved the settings on modx connect, everything will load automatically, did I get it right? Thanks for the answer, really appreciate since I’m in the process of maybe buying the modx. My concern is, is it as easy to use as other vsts? I want the benefit of not having to install all vst soundbanks every time, and at the same time I don’t want to compromise with the workflow. Had a Korg M3 years ago, and I was pissed of because of the workflow and that I needed to rec all presets as audio files to each track.

  • @KierDarby

    @KierDarby

    3 жыл бұрын

    @@bullzeyebeats you can treat the MODX like a VST using MODX Connect. Let's say you set up the MODX with a piano and a drum kit in a performance, then record the MIDI output from those instruments into Logic, then to get those performances back in a year's time, all you need to do is have the MODX connected while you load the project in Logic, everything else is done for you. If you want to play back the project *without* the MODX connected, you'd obviously need to have recorded the audio output. Does that answer your question?

  • @KierDarby

    @KierDarby

    Regarding your Korg workflow issues, once you know how it all hangs together, I think Yamaha have done a great job of simplifying DAW workflow with Montage/MODX Connect - the ability to have all your performance settings stored with the DAW project is a real life saver.
