My HDD went kaput and after watching this a number of times I’ve followed it to do my own repair after tinkering with my MacBook Pro many times prior. I had prepared the parts and tools needed before to do an upgrade but hadn’t needed it, so it not booting at all meant I had to get it working again and way less bothersome when you know it’s already not working. Took me about 3 hours and now I have managed to up a 1.25TB Fusion to a 5TB Fusion (1TB SSD + 4TB HDD) and currently running Time Machine restore 🥳 Thank you for your great instructions that guided me through!

I just used my Dremel to make a nice rectangular cut in the back of the case. I’ve tried all kinds of different ssds just for fun. I mean, it’s a 9 year old computer. It’s not going to last for eternity.

You can if you wish, however it's not entirely necessary.

Well, you better check if the iMac runs perfectly before you glue the display back on.... but the rest is well done.... QUESTION: I am intended to swop the HDD of my late 2013 iMac 27" i5 1GB Vram with a 1TB SSD plus a 1TB NVMe on the logic board. Eventually I replace the graphic chip too....if I find one on Ebay... furthermore: will there be any problem regarding those 2 SSD's? Hope you know the answers...

What brand specifically (recommendation accepted) or what particular gen. have you used? I've watched a video that used a samsung nvme 960 evo 250gb (extra adapter installed), which I think is gen 3, with a dissapointing speed test of around 740-780mb/s (dissapointing in the sense that it is advertised with a speed of around 3200mb/s). I heard that Imac 27" late 2013 is a pcie gen 2, is that right? Thanks again for the video and I would appreciate it much for some info on my query?

I've got the same model. I'm looking into it - same question. and another question: how does this model use that nvme? I presume this was the solid state part of the "hybrid" configuration. Mine was the fully configured unit w/128gb ssd card + 1TB seagate harddrive hybrid. - the seagate drive failed after 2 years of ownership (no surprises there), then I replaced it with another one, which failed a year later - got fed up with seagate and stuck in a used hitachi drive (from 2012 from a server) and it just died. So i wish to put in a Samsung EVO 970 in.

Congrats... You won't get more than that if you switch to a friendly pci-e. And the reason is the hardware limitation itself... If it is an old hardware, the limit is exactly what you are experiencing.

Which SSD boards are compatible?

It works with iMac 21” 2013?

Needing to buy a new tape to reatach the display just to get to the hard drive is sadistic shit

Thank you for this great tutorial. I tested my imac before sealing it up and it worked great, I then sealed it up waited 24 hours and turned it on. The fan ran high so I turned it off and when I turned it back on, nothing. Thoughts?

Hello Jason, it sounds like the there is an issue with the Thermal Sensor, if it doesn't detect any heat or the cable is missing the fans blow at max as it thinks there is a problem. I would recommend sending us an email at support@owc.com to troubleshoot further.

I have ran across different people online saying that this is an issue when installing an SSD but no one really said how to prevent it, just like in this video. Not one mention of that issue.

@@MOETtelevision yeah, I read about people having those issues too...mine is a late 2013 and I just installed another logic board with an ssd card and it fired up just fine.

Eh being a 2013 machine I would rather just replace it with a SSD SATA drive then use a proprietary PCIe SSD and have to take the whole machine apart

I installed the Samsung 970 Evo Plus with the sine tech adaptor. I have been getting about 750 read and about 680 write speeds with it. One thing which I found is the aftermarket adhesive strips used to secure the screen a second time make it very difficult to get back into the iMac a 2 nd time. As careful as I was, I still ended up ruining the screen....After replacing the screen, I used a couple of pieces of electrical tape to hold the screen in place. If someone has found a way to remove the screen a 2nd time, please post your solution...

If you remove the entire SATA drive from the iMac, the Fan will run normally.

This can be upgrade with a Macbook air MZ-EPC512O/0A2 SSD?

Thank you for the recommendation, the CMOS battery does not need to be replaced if there is no sign of a failure in the battery, it is recommended to be replaced every 3-5 years. You may by all means replace it if you prefer while the unit is open!

The Hard Drive can be reinstalled to have a Fusion Drive or to have additional internal storage.

Yes, that is something you can do if you choose to. Just install the OS on the NVMe drive and you're good to go

Not all of them do. It will depend on how it was configured from the factory. If it is just a standalone SSD or has a Fusion setup, which is a SATA drive and SSD, it will have the slot and hardware for doing the upgrade. If the iMac shipped from the factory with just a SATA drive the hardware will not be present to allow for the installation.

@@poweredbyowc Incorrect. All late 2013 27in iMacs have the PCIe slot on the main board regardless of if it was a fusion drive or SATA only. However the 21in does not always have it.

To Intel imac newcomers like me, this blade drive looks o lot like garden-variety NVMe drives with "M" key. Actually the key is different so the generic drive won't fit. OMC perhaps doesn't want to say this overtly, but the company does sell drives and other solutions that will fit. Good thing I did some reading, and didn't try to slap in a WD 1TB SN570. It's likely a good drive, just not for imac. Otherwise have fun with those Intel machines. The deals are out there, as mac OS support for them is getting phased out.

Hey Tony thanks for the inquiry, yes the SSD's used in the installation work for 2013-2019 iMacs! The only exception is the iMac17,1 Late 2015 model. It would depend on the type of internal drive you have, if your computer didn't come with a PCIe SSD or a fusion drive when it left the factory Apple doesn't put the connections in. As far as I know they don't sell them individually. You can check which you have by looking at your About This Mac's Storage tab or System Report and selecting PCI to see if you have the connections. You have a great question which confuses a lot of customers the iMac Retina 5K, 27in Late 2015 17,1 it is not compatible with our OWC Aura Pro X2 SSD. If you purchase an Apple SSD and install it, it will work without a problem. You would have to purchase that drive directly from Apple though.

These AIOs are such a pain. Couldn't they the apple industrial designers put the hdd/nvme slots under a 'door' in the rear, similer to the sodimm ram slots at the bottom of the old iMacs.

I’m confused. I have the 3tb fusion drive in mine. It’s not working and I use an external ssd drive hooked up via USB,,,what is the pcie ssd? Should I install one or just replace my fusion drive? Is the fusion drive a traditional 2.5” Sata drive ?

To explain what a fusion drive is 2 drive fused to be seen as just one drive. So you have a 3TB HDD (spinning drive) and a small blade style SSD (typically 32 or 64GB sometime smaller) You can replace both drives if you would like.

The Fusion configuration across the Hard drive and the PCIE SSD will need to be removed, before either of the drives can be upgraded. Replacing the Hard drive with a SSD would prevent the computer from using Fusion at all, since it cannot be created on Two SSDs. Depending on the symptoms of the Fusion you have, and what errors it is showing; replacing the hard drive portion could fix it. I highly recommend reaching out to our tech team to further discuss the symptoms you are seeing, and if the upgrades we offer would help resolve those symptoms.

Regrettably, the GPU can not be upgraded due to it being soldered to motherboard.

Have an late 2013 14.2 27 iMac with original FusionDrive. Is it better just updating the nvme to 2gb main ssd and remove the hdd. Or let the nvme as it is and just change hdd to a sata 2.5 SSD? Whats the difference?

But I dont know if switching to a complete usage Sata SSD will perform better than now. Dont know how fusion drive works. Or is it a performance downgrade in this case? A Fusion Drive is a combination of a traditional hard disk drive and a flash drive. The key difference between Fusion Drive and SSD is the performance speed. Though Fusion Drive uses SSD to load frequently accessed files, which makes the overall speed of the drive faster than that of a traditional hard drive, it still cannot match the performance level of a pure SSD.

According to everymac, the late 2013 always have the PCIe slots even if originally purchased from Apple with only a SATA HDD/SSD. About This Mac-Storage should say if it is SATA Hard Disk, Solid State SATA Drive or Flash Storage. If your iMac came with a fusion drive you can replace just the SSD portion and remove the HDD.

You have the option to either remove the HDD and install an SSD, or you can choose to keep the HDD and install only one SSD into the iMac.

My iMac didn't originally have an SSD, so there was no SSD hold down screw. Who knows how to get one?

You can take a screw from the HDD if you're replacing it or simply buy a 10-14$ kit on Amazon, if you play a lot with your computers the kit is handy :)

Its okay, not all procedures are for everybody. Frankly many of the more recent Mac upgrades have become a bit more challenging and they can be scary…but just know that if you need help, don't be afraid to ask.
