Electrician Ben Giles installs a 12-volt linear LED tape lighting system on the new pergola beams at the Westerly house. He shows apprentice De’Shaun how to cut the two separate wires at different lengths on either end of the connection to make a smaller junction. After twisting the wires together, he solders them and warms up heat shrink to make a watertight junction. Then they install the weatherproof lighting tape right into the track on the underside of the pergola beam.

Running the cable is the hard part of that job, but I guess that’s best left to a pro. But don’t fit the cover into the track before testing that the strip lights up! You don’t have to wait until dark for that, although showing us the finished effect after sunset would have been the obvious and professional thing to do.

Hmm, why use such an old fashioned method? Soldering went out with the Ark. If you get a duff joint then back to the beginning. And why no test before applying the shrink wrap? All in all not a very satisfactory demonstration. Might be a more sensible method to use bootlace ferrules and Wago 221 connectors. At least you can get a meter on the test point for fault finding.

Needs to learn what Flux is and how to use it, If you notice the connection after he soldered it youi can still see bare copper in the solder joint. Flux core solder is NOT what it's hyped up to be, Theres so little flux in the solder you have to flood the joint with solder to get enough solder to slean and prep the connection. No-corrode solder paste is the only way to do it.

There are solderjoints on the market who solder and shrink in one pass... Why don’t you use this? I recommend to run a thicker power cable with the strip and connect them every few ft. especially on longer strips. If not the most away from power feed are way darker than the ones close to the connector. And btw: a ledstrip is nothing without a proper controller and a gateway to your home automation system. Pls see thehookup or dr zzzs channel to get to actual standards.
