How to Install LED Brake Lights on an RV or Trailer with Separate Amber Turn Signals Using Converter

In this video, we will walk through the process of connecting new LED brake lights to an RV or trailer that uses 5 wires instead of 4, and has separate amber turn signals. Instead of running new wires, we decided to purchase a converter box (CURT 56196 2-to-3-Wire Splice-in Trailer Tail Light Converter for RV). While this might not be the solution for everyone, it was just what we needed to upgrade the brake lights in our retro 1976 RV.

This is what a father/son needs to be doing. In my short 41 years I have learned that the best people on earth, are the ones who learn how to fix things on their own and pass that knowledge to the next generation. God bless from communist Oregon

I would suggest that you mount that module in a place where it can be accessed for replacement. I have had two of those to quit working after a few years but were a different brand. Yours may be better but just in case you might want easy access. I am enjoying your build!

Yes, great minds think alike! We didn't end up mounting the box yet. We're most likely going to end up building a storage compartment in that area and mounting it in there so we don't have to tear the whole wall apart if it goes bad. Hopefully it'll last though! Your comment makes me glad we didn't go with the no-name brand off of Amazon that we almost bought. Thanks for watching!

I agree with the tedious job but if done incorrectly it will haunt you, well worth taking your time and avoiding future headaches. I look forward to seeing the tackling of the roof material, I am sure you are going to have some surprises up there, I think it is the most neglected part of these RVs mostly because of the ability to get up there. I knew every year I was going to have to reapply and remove some old caulking or butyl. It is mostly very easy but time-consuming and once again tedious. A rainy drive will give you a good indication of how awful things can be in a hot and humid RV, looking forward to your journey to getting this project back to being road and camp worthy. My two cents are that it might be worth running some cable for a rear camera that can be incorporated at a later time.

That's a great idea about a backup camera. We will look into those before we close up that back wall. I know they make some now that are wireless so I guess that could be an option too. The roof is quite a mess. We're still working on it but hoping to have it back together in the next couple days. Thanks again for watching :-)

Bare metal crimps and adhesive lined heat shrink FTW. I like the idea of the solder connectors, but I don't like using solder that melts at that low temp. I have also pulled many of them apart, just like the old plastic covered ones. I get into a job and tug on a couple connection and they fall apart. User error, sure, got to tug to make sure its good, but less guess work with bare crimps (tug it) and adhesive lined shrink.

Hey just letting you know i bought the same tail lights of ebay last year and the first time it rained they filled up with water and once the weather warmed up mold covered the whole inside of the lens. Both sides did the same thing and they both had no visible cracks. Your results may vary but you should keep an eye on them and seal them up if needed before the lens gets stained.

Hi, we're not sure about the wiring colors on your vehicle. There was a diagram on the Curt package that we went by. You might need to get out a tester and see which works are receiving power when you hit the brakes. Sorry we couldn't be more helpful.

Thanks! We ended up making this video because we couldn't find anything out there to really help us so we're happy you found it. The box itself had instructions on which wires to connect where. It was pretty straightforward. We just had to run wires over to the converter from the passenger side for ground and brake lights back to the box. Good luck with your connections. We hope you subscribe to follow along with the rest of our renovation!

@Retro Revivals did you guys ever test the "hazard" circuit with this light kit? I ended up purchasing the exact same configuration with the same light kit, and curt 2-to-3 converter and everything is great, except for the hazard circuit. They just buzz and flicker for about a half a second, during the vehicle's flash sequences.

I'm trying to remember... I think we did try the hazards and they didn't work but I'm thinking we might have read that in the reviews for the Curt box too. We should test that again. Hopefully we never need the hazards, right?!? Thanks for watching and commenting!
