How To Install Heated Gutters

Installing a Heated Gutter System step by step the Brothers Gutters Way.
During harsh winters, homeowners can experience unprecedented damage due to ice damming leading to greater repair costs. We install heated cable into your gutters and downspouts under a gutter guard system. The heated cable prevents ice and snow from building up in your gutter system, to help prevent the formation of an ice dam and water from entering your home.

Good stuff. I have reverse curve gutter guards that are great except during the winter. I'm looking into different heating systems. Some of the systems use cable with a "special" panel to transfer the heat. Would a heat cable generate enough heat to also heat these reverse curve covers?

Merry Christmas everyone. Brothers, I found your video to be one of the best so far. Any tips for homeowners who have leaf shields on their gutters? I have the mesh type installed on the front and back of the house. Thank you in advance. Do I have to take off the screens?

Hi guys - Good video, very easy and clear to understand and follow. I just subscribed. I have metal gutters and in the SE corner of the house that could use this is a PVC down spout. Can these gutter heaters be threaded thru PVC downspouts or do they have to be metal?

Hello Harvey! Great Question, It usually depends on what type of PVC you have on your downspout. However, We do not recommend installing Heat tape through PVC, Our best suggestion, if you are considering that route, is to reach out to the distributor of the PVC for heat-specific questions. Installing metal downspouts would be your best option to be completely safe.

Do you have to use the gutter guard to have heated gutter cables installed? Can the cable be put in and just left open to the elements?

Hey Larry, thanks for the question! No, you do not need to have gutter guards if you'd like to install heat cable into your gutters. However, gutter guards are great at protecting the cable itself as well as making sure it is clear of debris so that it has maximum snow melting potential!

Thanks, I appreciate the quick response. 1 last question - can the heat cable lie on the bed of the gutter as long as it is separate by clips from itself so it doesn't short out? @@TheBrothersThatJustDoGutters

Sure thing! It depends on the heat cable you are using. The heat cable that we use in the video will not short out. There are certain cables out there that can short out so make sure to check with the manufacturer.

My experience with heat taping gutters is that it is basically useless to do this. It's just enough heat to make a hole the size of the cable in the ice and they will not make your gutters ice free. To get enough heat for them to actually work would cost a small fortune in electricity. Furthermore, I would never cover my gutters with anything. There is NO gutter cover that works and they are all being sued.

We live in the Northern Utah and get lots of snow and nighttime temperatures have been in the teens. 12" more snow is expected tonight. I had neglected to plug in the heat melt this year and finally noticed an 8-10" deep ice dam over our gutters and filling them with solid ice yesterday afternoon. I plugged in the heat melt 24 hours ago and took a photo of the readings on our digital power meter at that time. The heat melt cable is 75' long and goes down one downspout. After 24" hours the ice dam was totally gone, the roof where we had the heat melt had no snow remaining, and our gutters and downspout were devoid of ice and were free flowing. I then checked the power meter again. The power usage for our home over that 24 hour period was 16 kw hours. We pay 9.25 cents per kw hour. So the last 24 hours of power usage for our home was $1.48, or about 6 cents an hour. That usage also included TV, electronics, heated mattress, lights, blower motor on the furnace, fridge, freezer, and a boat load of small appliances and other power drains. That's the best $1.48 I ever spent.
