Just trying a new installation of FreeBSD (last time was release 10 in 2015 haha) and your installation of Gnome works perfectly. Thanks you so much !

Cool, can you do it with Waylanf GNOME on Freebsd instead of Xorg ?

5:40 I am pretty shure that there is no rc script for gnome or hald, and moused is only needed when you whant to use a mouse in your text console. Other than that nice video, but you might want to speed up the portions where all the packages get downloaded and extracted. ;)

@@TechSolutionz yours finally work and everything is perfect except gnome eating up my ram , taking 1.5gb from boot up. I might do fresh install with xfce or dwn.

Yeah, Linux is way too trendy, as opposed to Windows which no one uses apparently :D

so basically in 2023 still freebsd can not install a desktop environment in one command such as "pkg install" bla bla (gnome or KDE or whatever....)

Yeah it's a shame. It doesn't even offer the option to install one through the installation and prefers to use VI instead of nano (or any other useful text editor) in 2023

  • @Felix-ve9hs

@@JLR8988 The reason why is that FreeBSD uses the 2-Clause BSD license, which is incompatible with either nano or most desktop environments, which are licensed under various versions of the GPL license. If FreeBSD would include such software in it's Base it could not be legally distrobuted, at least not officially.

You could just run the command "pkg install -y gnome gnome-desktop dbus gdm xorg && echo "proc /proc procfs 0 0" >> /etc/fstab && service dbus enable && service gdm enable && reboot", which is a single command for installing Gnome on FreeBSD. ;P
