    Good video. One thing, your flashing over the window head should have end damns to prevent wind driven rain from draining behind the siding. Code requirement up here in Canada. Cheers.

  • @BorsellinoHomeServices

    @BorsellinoHomeServices

    nowadays from video I've seen you are supposed to hold the header trim 1" above the flashing leaving a huge gap too. Which I think is ridiculous. I have done the end caps you talk about before and always wondered if it really helped or not. I caulk it all in place but caulk does eventually fail. The thing I don't like about the end things is the flashing hangs over a little now and then you have to notch your siding around it.

    This is a good video with great tips on how to, the thing that is bothering me is, why not bring the side trims all the way down and then cut the bottom board in between the two sides, this way will help for rain water to drain straight down instead of onto the bottom trim board, causing for rotting My .02

  • @BorsellinoHomeServices

    well designwise a windowsill typically goes the entire width of the trim is why. If you eliminate the windowsill altogether then yes you can cut the bottom trim board to the width of the window and run the side pieces long. I've done that before on a different style house. In the old days the windowsill was built right into the window and the whole piece was on an angle so water would shed away. The way we do it nowadays is reproducing the look without the angle. So you are in fact correct this does give a place for water to collect but that is why you cut an angle on the top of the sill so water sheds away and make sure it is caulked really well

    This was EXCELLENT! I am trying to enlarge my rotted out window trim which is only 1”. I want it to be 2” as it looks nicer. My question was: Do I need to cut the siding out around the window and insert the new trim or do I just put the new trim over the siding and fill it with caulking. Your video answered my question - I need to trim the siding back! Good thing I do have a Multitool! I also see that you did not miter the corners. Is this also to better protect the house from potential water penetration?

  • @BorsellinoHomeServices

    @BorsellinoHomeServices

    You probably could miter the corners, It would be more of an aesthetic thing than a water thing. Water will always find a way in! That's why I flash and caulk everything as best as possible

    I had the same question, but I’m a stay at home mom without any woodwork experience. So now my plan to put trim around my front window might not happen. I bought shutters for all the other windows, but I think shutters around a double window look weird and I removed them. Maybe I’ll get the courage up to do the trim. If not, I’ll have to go buy more shutters and just live with it. I’m so nervous to remove my siding, because I’m afraid I’ll do it wrong and rain will poor under vinyl siding and rot my house. It’s under a large overhang, about a foot and a half and it stays bone dry under that area. As a matter of fact. My plants never get water under that overhang since the rain never gets under there. So maybe I should t be so nervous. Thank you for a great video and making it simple for someone like me to understand

    Hi!, My home was built in 1996 with hardieboard siding. I'm told by a builder that the siding I have is old and most likely brittle, might even have cement in it so would be dufficult to cut cleanly and would open up s can of worms. The windows are sealed well as is. Do you have a video about trimming a window over existing siding? Is there a risk of a 1x4 warping since it's not as thick as a 2x4? What is the downside of installing trim over my existing siding? Right now my windows are not trimmed, looks dated. Thank you!

  • @BorsellinoHomeServices

    @BorsellinoHomeServices

    I've never installed hardie siding so I don't know what's best for that. You can hand nail trim too. I've used a finish nailer but it doesn't hold the trim very well. While a finish nail looks nicer it doesn't have the same grab as a ring siding nail. You can get maze nails which has a slightly smaller head than the siding gun nails, but you have to hand nail those. I've also used spiral nails but if you ever have to take the trim off for a repair they are near impossible to remove. The siding gun to me is the best tool for the job but I'm sure others may disagree

    So by using 5/4 Trim, the wood siding just butts up against it? If I was installing the Trim on a house with Vinyl Siding, do I no longer need J-channel? you either need j channel or cut out a rabbit in the back of the trim to make your own j channel. I've seen brick molding that has a rabbit pre-cut into it for vinyl siding but never seen it on a 1x4 that's custom

I like the drip edge at the top and was curious about the window seal but never saw it. Is it ok to let the trim on the sides drip onto the sill? Do I need drip egde there? @@BorsellinoHomeServices It's the left thumb that gets whacked off. I saw you advance your left hand after you started cutting-bad. Keep that left hand planted (put a red line on the table!), pressure with thumb knuckle against board to press against fence. You're ok with right hand as long as board is wider than 3-4" because that's where the eye is. But, push stick is a very good habit. You can cut vinyl siding with tin snips. An oscillating tool would technically work but would be much harder than just using snips and you would end up damaging the tyvek or other membrane behind it in the process. You would need to use 5/4 trim and cut a rabbet for the vinyl to sit behind the trim to have a built-in j-channel.
