How to install (eventually) the RG Custom Metalworks Titanium Para 3 Scales
Тәжірибелік нұсқаулар және стиль
Today, we'll face an epic battle with a peened-out lanyard tube from Spyderco as I install a set of RG Custom Metalworks Titanium Scales on a brand new Spyderco Para3. The end result runs great, but the process was much more complicated than it needed to be thanks to Spyderco's assembly approach.

I felt this pain. The lanyard tube removal tool from sharpdressedknives really helps with this pita disassembly.
I appreciate that this review includes the lanyard tube headache. I don’t trust a disassembly video of a spyderco that goes suspiciously smoothly. 😂
If you put something like a screwdriver between the g10 and steel liner and slide it up towards the tube it will pop it out everytime. Takes about 10 seconds.

This right here
The frustration was palpable. I greatly appreciate you leaving in your struggles. Hopefully Spyderco will fix their lanyard tubes & banish permanent threadlocker to thumb studs, where it belongs.
I have 2 para 3s that I ordered scales for. I went ahead and ordered the lanyard tube removal tool. Thanks, Nick
Beautiful Scales jst Amazing.. I have to get me some of these.. Thx for showing the complications that could arise instead of editing it. Something that could come up during disassembly is nice to see authenticity
Lanyard tubes can be a pain in the arse.
PM2/3 owners the world over are saying 'yuuuup'... same'o.....same'o with the dayum tube😰🙉 Such a sweet Para3 now Nick...congrats!👏👏👏
To get the flare off the lanyard tube, go outside and get a stick, cram it in the lanyard tube and turn it against a file a couple rotations
I’ve seen if you get a screw driver in between the G10 and the liner you can pry the lanyard tube off they way.
Yup ! I bought a SDK lanyard removal press also, it took me a while to find one though but when I did, I jumped on it 😊
Those scales and clip made a world of difference.
going to receive my first folders tomorrow, pm 2 black digi camo, manix 2 xl black and a yojumbo blacked out for edc..i only own finnish and swedish standard fixed blades for bushcraft and one malanika custom which is the only one with a fancy new powdersteel ( magnacut ) can't wait for the spyderco's :) but now i'm sure i will never mod them or take them apart - thanks nick, new sub here
I got some blades we love scales n matching hardware for my PM3.. looking forward to being able to tear it down and customize it
lol, how does Nick not own a $30 lanyard tube removal tool by this point?

Was a little surprised by that, too, but if you want a para 3, you have to buy a deep carry clip AND. A lanyard tube remover. That should be built into the price. Spyderco needs to make changes. Maybe it’s on principle, he hasn’t bought one
What a fight !
Yes! More Titanium fun for the shiney toy soldiers. I'd like to see you put some frn handles on one of your Herman's. You could reuse that lanyard tube.
Bless your heart. I would have broken out the angle grinder long ago
I have a bunch of leftover lanyard tubes, I've always replaced with aftermarket when I do a scale swap. The lanyard cube is worth it just for the whole Zen thing.
Over the last few years I've probably bought 15 PM2's and Pars 3's. I've only had the problem you've had with the PM2's. The Para 3's seemed to have a looser fit in the G10. It looks like the outer diameter of the lanyard tube varies a lot. I've found that the Flytanium Ti lanyard tube fits well. They've taken the lip off the edge of the lanyard tube so it press fits with just finger pressure. I'm sorry your installation was so difficult.

Those scales are Amazing. Byfar the best ones I have seen on the market.👏👏 Do you have a rough idea when the pm2's are back in production..
I like that you didn’t edit the struggle out…those guys are nothing but a headache to do
Man, those scales are so beautiful. Just got some RGT Tero Tuff scales for my Shaman 15V. Tero Tuff seems like an interesting material similar to Canvas Micarta, but got some advantages like being stronger and lighter, and uses Polyester based resin, and is not hazardous compared to phenolics. So will be interesting to see how it feels. Hope to also find some nice Sage 1 scales, but shockingly hard to find aftermarket scales considering the very simple construction.

@@Krozin Oh yeah, I'm fully aware. I'm pretty sure I wrote what I was waiting on was RGT? Hope it wasn't too confusing to understand
Whenever I pull one of these apart, I throw that lanyard tube in the trash and put in a flytanium plug.

Yes! Yes sir, that is the way to do it.

Yeah, but it’s one of 2 extra things you have to buy to get a satisfactory para 3, PM2. Just…$80 extra every spydie you buy.

@modofatak that's fine. If I was worried about money spent, I probably would not be in this hobby. I enjoy modifying them too. I added a sharpening choil to one of my pm2s, and I denubbed one of my shamans. Most of my pm2s have different scales on them. I even found lanyard plugs that have tritium tubes in them. Those are made by Glowrhino.
I really wish Spyderco would give you the option of buying one with a lanyard plug.

I really wish spyderco would do/wouldn’t do a very long list of things.
I might have snapped off the G10. Scoring the G10 across and up to each respective side of the lanyard tube. Then snap!? One other thing, "RG" could install a blind surface pin for the lanyard tube. Enabling them to move the clip back, having new free territory to do so. Deeper carry, of course.
Try using a brass/nylon mallet - less chance of damage. They come in a variety of sizes. Gunsmiths use them. Thanks for showing your challenges.
I’m nervous to do this to my favorite native 5. It’s perfect in terms of no blade play, perfect centered. But the g10 is started to really be beat up.
I got that sharp dressed knifes lanyard tube tool so I’d have an easy time getting it a part. 😅
After my first Para experience, I've gone into every other build with the intention of swapping out the tube with the scales. Be frustrated once. However, I do agree that there really is no reason for Spyderco to flair the tube.
The struggle is real.
If you take a lighter and run it over the g10 around the tube a few times it will come apart much easier
Just did a scale swap on the para 2 stupid pain in the arse that lanyard tube is I actually sanded down the lipped part of the tube to get it into the new micarta scales
I wonder if that lanyard tube issue is just a problem with the G10 scales? The only PM2 that I've disassembled is a Fat Carbon one from SMKW, and the tube popped out with no issues at all. Guess I just got lucky..
Hey Nick! Does the PM2 have the same lanyard tube flare issue? Wondering if it’d be a little more straight forward to swap the PM2?
I chipped a nice set of micarta scales with the lanyard tube issue. Total bummer
I wasn't aware that the Para 3 had a pivot bushing similarly to the Sage 5 LW. Was this something they added to the S45VN version or do the S30V's have it as well?
Oh I saw a video if you slide a small driver between the scale and liner it will pop off
that’s one mangled knife, ouch.
Yeah i think they make a tool for taking off the lanyard tube😊 also i think since you have been showing these scales on your channel they are impossible to get😊

Yeah, a supercharged firecracker.
Would filing down the flare on the lanyard tube work, as long as you don't take off height?
@fuhq5121
11 ай бұрын
Yes. Perfectly.
Run a thin screwdriver between the g10 and the metal liner it'll pop off
I thought Spyderco would make a comment.
It’s frustrating to watch. Still love Spyderco.
So something was out of spec and instead of fixing the problem they break out a hammer to make it fit. Not a problem if you're talking about a $10 flea-market knife
Festival of Frustration would be a good album or song name. Probably not a good band name imo. Nice quippitude Nick.
Most likely you will never use the g10 scales again so why not just cut 2 notches at the end of the g10 avoiding the steel liners then just snap them off .
This video makes me want to never attempt to do this!!!!

I can't stand the PM2 & Para 3 Lanyard tubes. That "SDK Lanyard Cube - PM2, Para3, Manix 2 Lanyard Tube Removal Tool" makes things so much easier, and pop in a Flytanium Ti lanyard tube and it makes things so much easier in the future. I'm sure other Ti lanyard tubes work great as well, but not tried them so can't speak on them. I hope when Spyderco finally make a PM3 and a Para 4 that they drop the lanyard tube and hide it in a small backspacer or something where they belong.
Gawd spyderco is so frustrating. I think they’re hoping for a buy-out, because they certainly don’t seem to be innovating or QCI’ing all of these issues with which most reasonable ppl have been historically annoyed
In addition to the terrible names (paramilitary?!) I'd never buy a para2 or 3. I hate the lanyard tube. I also do not like that type of frame lock because I'm left handed, and it makes it a 2-hand close knife for me. Also, the Native 5 exists, as does the Chaparral...Both are better EDC knives, IMO. It is sad you have to destroy the G10 to attach the Ti.
They really have no reason to flare the tube, make it more expensive and complicated to manufacture.
Your logo in the middle of the scales sort of ruins the clean look. I would have etched the blade instead
