    If I'm not mistaken, the crimped end goes towards the wood stove to keep creosote from running down the outside of the stove pipes. One other item. Assuming the sheet metal flue is steel, you would use steel rivots.

    Mike, you are right! However, with a real coal stove, the crimped edges go toward the chimney. This keeps the products of combustion inside the pipes. No creosote with anthracite coal. TY Larry Trainer Chubby Stove Co.

    Maybe check the installation manual on connecting the stove pipe sections. The old Chubby manual from 1978 called for sheet metal screws, not pop rivets. It probably wont matter, unless there is an insurance claim. If the insurance inspector/adjuster discovers the stove was not installed per manufacturer specifications or code, there will be a problem.

    I like to cut with a cordless cut off wheel. Its snsp-lockd together at the time I'm trimming to length.

    Wish I had seen this 3 or 4 years ago! Had to learn by trial & error, and a little bit of fluid mechanics from college, that I needed the baro. Also part of that learning curve was setting my secondary intake. My stove is a 110 year old (original) railroad potbelly. With oil prices, I ran coal quite a lot this winter, and was able to achieve a nice, controlled burn. While my stove doesn't have any firebrick or refractory cement, I haven't quite gotten confident enough to fill the bowl all the way, but instead "layer it in" over a period of time, as it's not hard to make the pot glow if not careful. My pipe junction males are pointing toward the stove, but there's always an excess of draft here and I haven't noticed any problems.

    The stove pipe that I have is for a wood stove. I think its 22 or 24 guage steel.

    Are there any particulars as far as the EPA is concerned? I currently own a wood stove and the soot, as minor as it is, is a pain. Also, this wood stove is labor intensive at times. I like the idea of the 12 burn. Great video by the way.

    The Chubby is UL tested and does not have any particular EPA issues in that direction.

    How is your pipe holding up? I talked to an installer and they refused to install my coal stove because they wouldn't warranty the pipe and they said it would rot away in a few years because of the sulfur. Thanks

    Did you drill into the cast iron oval-to-round adapter on top of the stove to set rivets, or secure screws to the first piece of stove pipe?

  • @chubbystove2771

    There is a pilot hole in the oval end for you to drill into. On the round end (pipe end) local codes usually require you to drill the (pipe end) to the oval to round adapter.

    Why do the crimped ends need to go towards the chimney?

  • @chubbystove2771

    Hi Shawn! Good question. Crimped edges head towards the stove for wood. If there is burning liquid creasote chimney fire the creosote stays inside the pipe and heads back to the woodstove. With a real coal stove Not a combination the crimped edges head towards the chimney keeping products of combustion (gas) inside the pipes to the chimney. With a woodstove combination you can use furnace cement to seal the crimped edges preventing a creasote leak. Thanks for the great question. LT

    How high should you install the hand damper and the barometric damper I’m thinking of purchasing a chubby stove to replace my wood stove ? Also does the barometric damper need to go above the hand damper ?

  • @chubbystove2771

    @chubbystove2771

    Hi James, If you have a top venting stove, you can put the turn damper 12 to 15" above the stove. Your barometric damper above in the vertical or horizontal pipe. Be sure to adjust the face on the barometric damper to plumb, as shown in the instructions. Good question Thank you. Larry Trainer CSC. LLC.

    Hi Jeffrey, Thanks for your input! The Coal Stove Chubby is an anthracite coal burning product. Because there is no creasote we recommend the crimps head toward the chimney connector. This keeps products of combustion inside the stove pipe. Steve has it right! Again thanks for your input. Larry Trainer - Chubby Stove Mfg.
