Ich würde jedem, der eine ähnliche Lösung plant, empfehlen, das geplante Layout für Heizung und Tank VOR dem Einbau mit seinem TÜV-oder DEKRA-Prüfer zu besprechen. Ich habe das so gemacht und damit gab es später beim Gutachten und der Eintragung keine bösen Überraschungen. Da das Thema aber nicht jeder Prüfer gleich sehen muss, macht es Sinn, das mit dem konkreten Prüfer unbedingt vorher zu klären.

Hallo, tolles Video, super erklärt. Eine Frage: riecht es nicht im Fahrzeug nach Diesel? Ich probiere den Dieselkanister auf das Dach zu montieren und die Dieselleitung durch das Dach durch den Innenraum durch den Boden zur Standheizung zu verlegen. Ich hoffe die Pumpe schafft die Höhe? Was meinst Du ?

@@Beste_Rezepte Bei uns riecht man absolut überhaupt keinen Diesel innen. Leitungen durchs Dach sind aus meiner Sicht eher wieder ein Risiko für Dichtigkeit, außerdem eher unpraktisch beim Betanken.

Just found your channel and find that you take your time to do your installs, you explain carefully and you have an absolutely magnificent Van 1988 wow, I have a 2104 Sprinter and will follow your instructions for my install Thank you. Oh I did instal an Espar in my Beneteau sailboat in the 80's but this time around I bought a few Chinese heaters, one to replace if the original failed rather than clean it, I am in Canada so if it fails it would be easier and faster to simply replace it. I do really like the Wallas heater cooktop combo though however here in Canada its over $3000 dollars CDN.

‘Install’ is a verb. The noun is ‘installation’.

I have a Autoterm D4 and it keeps my wife and I very comfortable, I have had it up and running for just over a week now. I have a 5 gallon tank (15L) and it shows no signs of going empty.

Great Video. Thanks! I watched it because I have to remove my Autoterm Air 2D heater to clean it. It has been in my Van 2 year. I only use it on Ski trips in the winter. I never run it at night while sleeping. (my bed is setup somewhat enclosed to keep my heat in and down blankets under me and on top!) I would estimate it gets ran two or three hours 25 to 35 days a winter, now 2 season so maybe 70 days total. I am at high altitude most of the time when it is running and between 7 and 10.5 thousand feet. I was told after the installation not to run it on low due to carbon build up so it is always ran on the higher setting. It is a pain to remove and clean it so I have been reading several comments about the build-up. Most have suggested running on Kerosene. I really don't want to add a tank because mine is mounted under the passenger seat. I read about these heaters being used in work Trucks and it would surprise me if they have to clean them ever couple of months?? I am looking for any help or suggestion on prevention once I get it out, cleaned, and reinstalled. I am spoiled with having a heater. My first winter before the heater my dash temp read -22F one morning in Lake Louise Canada. My Van was new and did not like it up there lots of issues no one could figure out. Hi Marie, we have used the heater only for maybe 10 days in total so far and it's working fine. Would be great if someone who has long time experience can answer your question here...

Got a 308D and the same heater. Works well, although I really didn't like the original PU27(?) display. Got a more modern one with understandable menu, for me at least.. It's great to see your truck come together, getting flashbacks to my own built!

Checked, I got a Autoterm Comfort Control Unit, also from Tigerexped. For other readers with a T1, diesel: a Planar 2D fits perfectly in the passenger seat base, it’s close to the diesel return line as well so easy connect without drilling the tank. :)

@@evellopHi, you talk about the diesel return pipe. Is that mean that we can put a ''T'' or "Y" derivation on the return pipe, to plug the heather pump on ? Is the heather pump powerful enough to pump diesel through the ''big'' diameter of original diesel pipe?

@@w2edy Hi, indeed, I used a T-splitter piece on the Diesel return line to get the fuel input for the heater. And this works well (operating for 3 years without issues now, about 20 days of operation yearly only though). To be honest when installing I never doubted the sucking power of the pump, it jsut worked. Went for this way as I saw it being mentioned in a few different messages boards.

Another great video. Putting the pipe the whole way to the bottom may not be a good idea as moisture can gather at the bottom of the tank and also dirt so keep it a little way from the bottom if it’s a concern. Also ensure a pipes under neath are well clamped with rubber clips as any lose or floppy pipes will vibrate as u drive down the road. Your workman ship is very tidy and ur van looks smart already

Thanks, Marcus! You are absolutely right. The pipe should be 1cm above the bottom of the tank. That's also stated in the manual and that's what I did, but I should also have said that in the video..., so it's good that you mention it here in the comments! Meanwhile I also added corrugated plastic tubes to better protect the fuel pipe. Cheers, Mike.

I have seen all the videos you published so far, impressive work, very very nice. I love your precision and style and the Mercedes T1 too. Just a concern about the fuel line under the van. Will it freeze on winter / cold countries? I'm studying to start my van conversion.. and this one of the thousands doubts I'm facing!

Thanks! :) Freezing Diesel would only be a problem in very cold conditions, but then a Diesel engine of a van would have the same problems. In Germany Diesel gets additives in winter, so you won't have problems down to temperatures of -20°C. Probably every country uses these additives according to expected temperatures because they want to keep their trucks going. That's why I wouldn't worry about the Diesel heater unless you fill the tank in a warm country or in summer (without additives) and then travel with this full tank of old Diesel into a cold country in winter time ;)

Du scheinst mit deinem Prüfer Glück gehabt zu haben... ich wollte bei meinem neuen Van auch einen Zusatztank verbauen, bei mir haben sowohl TÜV als auch Dekra nein gesagt, weil es ein Dokument gibt mit den Vorgaben zum Einbau eines Zusatztanks und was da alles drinnen steht macht es offiziell unmöglich, sich irgendwie den Tank im Wohnraum zu verbauen... z.B.: Tank muss vor einem Front- oder Heckaufprall geschützt sein. Damit fällt der Einbauort hinter dem Radkasten schon mal weg.

Hallo Dennis, ich hatte meinen Einbau zuvor mit dem DEKRA-Prüfer besprochen und dann genau so gebaut, wie er das haben wollte. Aber da zeigt sich wieder, wie extrem unterscheidlich das Thema von Prüfer zu Prüfer behandelt wird. Wie löst du das jetzt? Habe übrigens alle deine Videos von deinem alten Ausbau angesehen, bevor ich meinen gestartet habe. Hast du super gemacht! Guter Tipp noch an der Stelle, besorgt euch die Schellen für die Spritleitungen, Abgasrohr sowie die Haltewinkel noch aus Edelstahl. Die im Set enthaltenen habe ich verbaut und trotz Silkonspray (als Hitze Konservierung) nach 3 Jahren so durchgerostet, dass diese sich nur noch mit Gewalt und borsten aufmachen ließen.

Very good video. Thank you! If the air intake is inside of the car aren't you using up the air inside? Could imagine the air quality can get quite bad after a full night. Is it possible to build the air intake to the outside of the van?

Hi! You will need some kind of ventilation for the night in any case, no matter if you use the heater or not. But for that it's better to use a vent in the roof or maybe a window. There are two problems with an air intake for the heater from outside under the van. First is efficiency, of course, and second you could suck in your own combustion fumes, if the wind turns in the wrong direction.

Auch dass du alle verwendeten Komponenten direkt nennst und noch verlinkst hilft mir echt weiter! Danke! Mir kam allerdings der Gedanke, ob die offizielle Eintragung durch den TÜV jetzt auch für andere Länder gilt?! Also speziell was einen Zusatztank im Auto angeht, haben einige Länder ja Recht restriktive Gesetzgebungen. Denkst du, das ist dann auch in diesen Ländern mit dem Zusatztank kein Problem? Und dann kamen bei mir noch so Fragen zum Thema Heizöl und Standheizung auf - vielleicht hast du diesbezüglich ja schon Erfahrung/Expertise sammeln können(?): Hast du die Standheizung mittlerweile mal mit Heizöl laufen laufen? Falls ja, klappt das ohne Probleme? Ist bei Heizöl nicht irgendwie so Farbstoff beigemischt, dass dann bei der Verbrennung am Auspuff sichtbar wird? Oder ist das bei Verbrennung über die Standheizung nicht so? Und hast du zufällig einen Tipp, wo man das Heizöl in kleineren Abnahmemengen (zB 20 Liter) und vielleicht auch unterwegs herbekommen kann? Kann man die Heizung ohne Probleme immer mal mit Heizöl und Diesel abwechselnd betreiben? Wäre super interessant, falls du da deine Erfahrungen teilen oder vielleicht ein follow-up Video hochladen könntest... Nochmals vielen Dank VG

Ich denke, wenn der bei einem deutschen Auto vom deutschen TÜV eingetragen ist, dann ist das auch im Ausland ok. Jedes Land hat ja bei allen möglichen Details unterschiedliche Vorschriften und ein ausländischer Wagen muss ja auch nicht den deutschen TÜV bestehen, von der generellen Verkehrstauglichkeit mal abgesehen. Ich habe noch nicht versucht, Heizöl zu tanken, weil es in meiner Gegend keine Tankstelle gibt, die das in Kleinmengen abgibt. Grundsätzlich gibt es aber paar in Deutschland. Die kann man googeln. Der Farbstoff müsste unsichtbar verbrennen. Das dürfte kein Problem sein. Aber vielleicht kann hier jemand anderes noch kommentieren, der das mit dem Heizöl bei der Autoterm mal selbst getestet hat...

In the manual it says fuel tank should be below the heater level. Is that essential? Or will it eventuallly generate erroe. Odea.

My heater works without problems, so having the tank on the same level is surely ok.

Sehr schön erklärt kommt wahrscheinlich bei mir auch so eingebaut. Gibt es denn Dieselgeruch im Auto durch den heipro Kanister ??

Hi Frank, ich konnte da bisher keinen Geruch feststellen. Am Deckel des Tanks ist original ein kleines Lüftungsventil, das ich zugeklebt habe. Das ist wichtig. Stattdessen gibt es den Lüftungsschlauch nach draußen und damit kann eigentlich kein Geruch in den Van kommen. VG, Mike

@@CubeofCars hi , ich nochmal. Habe es jetzt auch so mit dem Tank gemacht, funktioniert gut. Frage, macht es etwas aus wenn der Tank wie bei dir etwas hôher steht als die Heizung. Ich hatte alles angeschlossen hab die Heizung zweimal anlaufen lassen damit die Leitung voll wird. Nach den zweimal , war sie bis zur Hälfte gefüllt. Müsste dann weg ,und als ich wiederkam war die Leitung ganz gefüllt. Kann manchmal durch den Druck ,da der Kanister höher steht etwas überlaufen oder etwas passieren??? Vielen Dank im vorraus

Ich habe nirgendwo etwas gelesen, dass der erhöhte Tank ein Problem ist. Bei mir läuft die Heizung ohne jegliches Problem. Bei dir ist die Luft in der Leitung wahrscheinlich einfach mit der Zeit nach oben in den Tank gewandert und damit war der Schlauch dann mit Diesel gefüllt.

Hey du ich wollte dich mal fragen ob das mit dem externen Tank geklappt hat also die Eintragung ich habe es jetzt mit nem Kollegen ungefähr gleich bestellt diesen Tank bei ihm hat die Dekra allerdings gezickt und es klappt nicht er muss es jetzt in den normalen Tank einbauen ich bin noch nicht so weit und bin jetzt bissel verunsichert ob ich’s einfach auch machen oder lasse 😅 weil an sich finde ich die Lösung mit nem extra Tank so viel besser ☺️

Hi Philip, ich habe mein Layout vor dem Einbau mit meinem Dekra-Prüfer abgesprochen und dann gab es auch mit dem Gutachten und der Eintragung keinerlei Probleme bei mir. Ich kenne inszwischen aber auch andere Fälle, wo es nicht so einfach war. Daher würde ich dir auf jeden Fall empfehlen, das auch vor Einbau mit deinem Prüfer zu besprechen, damit die Arbeit dann nicht umsonst war. LG, Mike

Hi, habe gelesen (aber Papier ist geduldig ;) ), dass ein Zusatztank im Innenraum eine zusätzliche Einhausung braucht (z.B. einen Holzkasten). Sehe ich jetzt hier im Video nicht. Hattest du Probleme mit der Eintragung beim TÜV?

Nein, das ist nicht nötig. Ich habe im Vorfeld mit dem TüV geklärt, was nötig ist und das war nur ein druckgeprüfter Tank, eine ordentliche Befestigung und eine Entlüftung nach draußen. Abnahme war dann problemlos. Mir wäre jetzt auch nicht ersichtlich, welchen sicherheitsrelevanten Vorteil ein Holzkasten um den Tank noch hätte?

Why did you choose a diesel heater vs a gasoline heater that could run off the van’s fuel tank? Do you hear the fuel pump for the heater? I saw another install video in a diesel engine van. He tapped into the van’s fuel tank and said the fuel pump is “absolutely not silent.” I purchased a built Ford Transit van with an Autoterm 4D gasoline heater. I have had lots of problems. The heater and fuel pump have been replaced with new units and still there are problems. The company thinks it may be a combination of altitude and additives in American gasoline. They suggested switching to a diesel unit with its own separate fuel tank. Thank you.

I wanted to have an extra tank for peace of mind. The tank of the T1 is quite small, so I think it's better not to drain the main tank while maybe staying in a remote area for longer time. I wouldn't say that the fuel pump is "absolutely silent" because if you listen carefully you can hear the click noise. But it's not a problem. So far we haven't had any issues with our Autoterm and it works perfectly.

Thank you for the info. What elevations are operating the heater? The USA distributor is saying my problems with the gasoline (petrol) model are a combination of altitude and additives in American gasoline. However, the heater will not operate properly at elevation 4,200’, which is not high by mountain standards. Most ski areas and hiking/mt. biking trailheads are well above that.

@@traildog6339 The Diesel version is rated for altitudes of up to 4000 m, so there should never be a problem. This has been tested by various overlanders. But a petrol version of the Autoterm has never been on the market in Germany, so I don't know details here.

Was ich bisher noch nicht ganz verstehe: Wäre es nicht sinnvoller, den Schlauch zur Belüftung eher ganz oben auf dem Tank anzubringen - also eben da, wo du jetzt den Tankentnehmer verbaut hast, der zur Dieselpumpe geht? Vorteil wäre hier doch, dass der ganz obere Teil dieses Tanks ja kein Kraftstoff (Diesel) enthält und somit auch meiner Einschätzung nach nichts so schnell durch den Schlauch zur Belüftung "herausspritzen" kann, oder? Bei dem bereits am Tank vorhandenen Schlauchanschluss (direkt neben dem Tankdeckel) ist ja nicht so viel bis gar kein Platz nach unten zum lagernden Kraftstoff und daher wäre es doch hier eher geeignet den Kraftstoff zu entnehmen, oder? Bzw. welche Erfahrung hast du bisher mit dem Belüftungsschlauch an dieser Stelle (am Schlauchanschluss, direkt neben dem Tankdeckel) gemacht? Spritzt/schwappt der Diesel da (ab und an) in den Belüftungsschlauch? Oder befüllst du den Tank einfach nur bis zu einem bestimmten Punkt, sodass er nicht so voll ist und der Diesel nicht in den Belüftungsschlauch spritzen kann? Ich war gerade drauf und dran deine Lösung nachzubauen und da kam mir dann dieser Gedanke ;-) Von daher frag ich lieber nochmal nach. Würde mich freuen, wenn du kurz dein Erfahrung dazu schildern könntest. VG

Hi Stephen, du hast grundsätzlich schon recht, dass ein Belüftungsschlauch am besten möglichst weit oben sein sollte und die Location des Anschlusses nicht perfekt ist. In der Praxis ist das aber kein Problem, da ich persönlich den Tank nie über 80% füllen werde. Ganz voll zu machen ist mir zu riskant, weil die Gefahr zu groß ist, beim Tanken überzuschwappen, aber ich will auch nicht, dass im schrägen Gelände der Diesel bis im Schraubverschluß steht. Übrigens ist bei diesem Tank im Schraubverschluß selbst eine originale Entlüftungsöffnung, die du zukleben mußt (weiß nicht, ob ich das ihm Video gesagt habe). Letztlich reichen 80% vom Tank locker für mehr als eine Woche, daher sehe ich kein Problem, lieber auf Nummer sicher zu gehen. Aber du kannst Entlüftung und Entnahme natürlich auch anders herum verbauen. Das ist nicht falsch und vielleicht noch eine Stufe sicherer. VG, Mike

I did contact them, he wasn't Autoterm, just a distributor. He left me hanging, when I chased him up he got all arsey and thought an 8 hour trip each way to Wales was common sense. Quite frankly what seemed a godsend turned into a disingenuous wind up. Giving up van life in the winter months as a result. I will consider an Alternative next winter if I can afford it. I certainly won't be robbed for £995 by Autoterm unreliable garbage again, that's for sure.
