Ғылым және технология
In this Video, I show you how to install and use wine to run windows applications on Linux. I go over the following topics for wine:
Install any dependencies via your package manager (wine and winetricks are a must)
Configure the Bottle
Setup any custom environment variables
Install exe
Modify shortcut

for those re-watching this video, like I am, skip to 2:14 if you don't want to watch the intro portion again ;o)
thanks for making this. It helped me get a tricky to run app to start. I created a bash script with the wine commands and added it to my desktop for easy startup.
A straight-forward and very well-explained video from you once again. Thanks much!
Thank you so much, this is going to be really useful for me! Great video, as always.
Very Cool Chris , you really know how to simply things , I enjoyed it so much have a great one and keep up the good work :-) ....
It's really useful tutorial! Thank you so much!
Hi, I have enjoyed your challenge videos, thanks for taking the time to make them. As you mentioned you have issues with running apps under wine, you may want to run winecfg and set the environment to Windows xp, then stick to 32 bit apps. This - together with mapping function call to native libs installed within the bottle - may fix your Adobe acrobat woes.
I am very new to linux and you have been very helpful to me with wine and everything so thank you. I did subscribe of course..
Linux noob here. This video really helped me installing Advanced renamer ... Thanks
This is awesome, thank you so much :D
Great lesson...thankyou

Hello. Really enjoy this video , learn a lot!!!!
Great video Chris...Many thanks..this is the first of several attempts I have managed to get wine working, thanks to you. :)...Do we create a new wine bottle for every program we install??
Great Chris, thanks for sharing your knowledge. I've only just replaced all my Windows PC's with Linux Mint and am very happy with it. I left one that dual boots with Win 10 as I still want to use Lumix Tether for my G9 camera. I followed your instructions to use Wine to install Tether on my laptop, it installed straight away and runs up to the stage where the banner shows on my desktop 'connect Lumix camera' but when I plug the camera in with my camera set to tether mode, nothing ever happens so It looks lie my first attempt will require more research. All other USB drives work with Mint so it's not that.
This vital info, thanks for this video. I have a bit more complicated issue with a piece of windows software that crashes during startup because I think its looking for a component I don't have installed. I have to take a close look of the crash errors to try to determine what it needs. Something to do with a symbol library, not sure yet.
thanks man it helps a lot.
I haven't had any luck getting a program working in Wine.

Great video! Video for installing Office 365 with Wine would be great if that is even possible of course
This is actually a pretty great video, it shows the basics of the WINE back end in a very simple to understand instruction method. However as someone who has used Wine for nearly a decade, it seems like you are almost making it harder then it needs to be. Before I mess around with custom "WINE bottles" I usually try just install it with the default settings that I've set up first, then if the 64bit arch. doesn't work then I uninstall it and create a custom "WINE Bottle" with 32Bit arch and go from there. I guess I'm lazy in trying to make things easy, but most of the time these days I just find my default settings usually work just fine without doing all that (yes back in the day of WINE 1&2 this was almost mandatory stuff to know if you were going to get something working at all, but WINE has improved a lot since then). I understand that you were working with a program that generally isn't supported, but maybe you may want to create a video that simplifies WINE for something that would be supported right out of the box (most GOGGAMES work just fine for that, if your looking for suggestions). I'm just worried one newbie might look at this video and it would scare him and he will think that WINE is super hard to use, when it doesn't have to be.

I think dropping everything into a default wine bottle is just a recipe for disaster. Its only a matter of time before you mess it up and then nothing loads. In my experience, doing it this way at least you only mess up one program. I assume not to even teach the above method as it almost always ends in heartache.

@@ChrisTitusTech I've always understood what I usually do isn't best practice at all (I have messed up my share of WINE bottles), and I only started doing this when I stopped doing important stuff with Windows apps and was able to find Linux alternatives. I only use WINE for games these days, so really the worst thing that can happen is that I have to wipe out all my games and that is a risk I am willing to take with just games (I would just go into the folders and just copy my save data first if I ever "borked" it and had to wipe the bottle and start over). Using WINE only to play games, I just have this standard list of dependencies that I know I need to play most windows games (I also know none of them conflict) and just install them into the default wine bottle, and after that I don't touch it (I also understand that this is part of being an advanced user and knowing what not to do). I know if I don't install any more dependencies inside of that bottle, i shouldn't mess anything up. If I find the rare instance that something needs another little dependency or 2, I'll create it's own bottle. When I teach someone this method I ALWAYS stress that you only do this with non-important data and never to put anything you are not willing to loose in the same bottle with everything else. If someone was doing serious business and important work with windows applications running in WINE I would NEVER suggest they use my method for using . But for someone who just wants to play a few windows games and doesn't want to mess with a bunch of stuff my method works just fine.

@@ChrisTitusTech I don't disagree with you on this point at all, and I don't want come off that way. Just for me the method I would teach someone would depend on the user's skill level and what they planned on using WINE for, this is my opinion. But all this aside. I love your videos, You do a great job in explaining how Linux works and how to use it. You have even taught this old Linux dog a couple of new tricks. So keep doing what you are doing!

Hey so I downloaded and ran the binding of isaac through wine and normally tye save files are saved in documents in windows so where will they be stored on linux cause they are not in documents
Trying to follow your steps but the prog. I'm trying to run in wine came in a .img file. Is that different to what I'm used to in Linux? Do I need to unpack it somehow for Wine? When I've clicked on the .img file my Kubuntu has started Virtualbox, which would be well and good if only I could get it to read USB.

Chris, would you consider a video for us newbies on how to even install Wine in the first place? When I bring up Mint's Software Manager I see over a dozen packages related to wine. Appalling68 Go to wiki.winehq.org/Ubuntu and follow the instructions to install it with the terminal (you can just copy and paste the commands into the terminal). Seems how you have Linux Mint you fallow the same instructions for Ubuntu since Mint is based off of Ubuntu. PlayonLinux for a newbe might be more you speed and will automatically install Wine for you (at least it did when I last tried it but that was a while ago, I don't really use it, if it doesn't anymore just install it), and it provides a really easy to understand to understand interface to configure you bottles. But if you want to try straight vanilla wine the only 2 other packages you really need is winetricks and Q4Wine (this makes it easier for you to run basic functions like the wine configurations, command prompt for wine, and regedit), in my opinion anything else that goes with vanilla wine you can ignore. Lutris is a great option for GUI for WINE too.

I' ve read in several places that Wine leaves a system open to infection by Windows viruses. Do the "bottles" contain the infection to just files within that bottle?
@ChrisTitusTech

I've seen this as well, but I have never experienced any of this. I honestly think most of this is just people wanting to push native software over emulated software. I won't fault them, but I have found zero truth to this saying. A virus designed for windows would simply not run on Linux and even if it did, I sincerely doubt it would ever do anything outside of the wine bottle. So, I'm going to just call this an urban myth that keeps being parroted around and I won't say it till I see it in practice.
