How to install and setup Redis on Ubuntu - Magento 2 Tutorial

Redis is an application that runs on your web server and is designed to improve the performance of applications such as Magento. It’s not difficult to setup, but there are a lot of steps. So, in this video I’ll walk you through installing Redis in Ubuntu and then setting up Magento 2 to take full advantage.
Before we begin, I want to highlight some key points about this tutorial:
-It’s written for Ubuntu 16.04 and 18.04
-At the time of writing, this will install version 5.0.5 of Redis
-Typically, there are two ways to install Redis. I have chosen the Repository method, which is much simpler to follow than the Source method

This one took a while... Originally, I needed to do a version for Ubuntu 16 and 18 - but I got it work for both in the end. Hopefully, this video will save someone a headache 😊

Redis and Varnish do different things. So, I guess the answer would be both. But I don't use Varnish due to bad experiences many years ago.

If I install Magento 2 and mysql on two separated server, which server should I install Redis? Or it actually doesn't matter?

Hey. That's a really good question. I don't have a definitive answer for you. However, after giving it some thought I would be tempted to install Redis on my Web Server rather than my MySQL server. Only because if I've created a dedicated MySQL server then I wouldn't want to bolt anything else onto it. I hope that helps.
is still valid for 2.3 in 2020?

I reckon it'll be fine all the way up to M2.4.0, as it's mostly configuration of the OS as opposed to Magento.
