Dude, you're my savior. You have no idea how many hours I've tried to find good virtual surround sound. I have a logitech G933 and I love the surround sound on it. It always gave me such an advantage in BR games. But it bugs a lot and I basically have to restart it every few minutes by now. Now I use a beyerdynamic DT 770 PRO stereo headset and I've tried Dolby Atmos, windows sonic, razer surround, 3d boom and all kinds of other software. None of them were even remotely working as expected. Idk what it is but it didn't give good directional sound at all. I don't truly understand what VB cable, apo and Hesuvi do but I freaking works. Now I can enjoy my new stereo headset and still have amazing surround sound for games. Thank you so much!

@Name ohh, sorry mate, i am not very knowledgeable about headphones. But yeah look for gaming headphones and not music ones. Music headphones focus too much on bass and will ruin your gaming experience because of its heavy bass tuning. And most headphones tagged with 7.1 virtual surround sound are pretty much common stereo headphones with additional surround sound software, and theres no point in going for expensive virtual surround headphones because you will be using HeSuVi anyways. I'd say buy some good quality stereo headphones in the market. But it would be better if you do some research on this topic. As i said, i dont know much about good headphones. Still, hope this helps :)
I am only installing the Equalizer APO and HeSuVi. I followed the same exact steps as you, but when I got to HeSuVi and tried to run it, the install stops at 92%. Then, a popup command window shows up and states, "You must install Equalizer APO 1st!". I did the manual reboot option, but it didn't work that way. Then, I added the HeSuVi file to the "Config" folder in Equalizer APO. But I still get the same notice. Not sure if my settings are off, but I literally copied the exact same steps, but got a completely different result... I think I've done this about 5 times today in different ways, but still same result...
Nice its working thanks!!!
If you're having trouble finding the "Configure" button for enabling 7.1 surround sound on newest version of Windows 10 do the following: 1. Close all sound windows. 2. Press "Win + R" and type "mmsys.cpl" then press "Okay" This brings up the old sound window.

It helped but I can’t hear anything
When I do all this and listen to the 8 channel file on virtual 7.1 playback output, I only hear FRONT LEFT, FRONT RIGHT. In sound devices I see volume spiking for each channel on the virtual audio cable, but it isn't outputting. The weird thing is if I go back to my STEREO headset it will happily mix and announce all the channels on that test file. Yes, headset is set as stereo and virtual audio cable is set as 7.1 =/ ... I do hear a difference in the 7.1 test panel on HeSuVi when I change sources so maybe it works and isn't getting thru the virtual audio cable. I dunno, confusing.
Wow. Other apps require purchase and accounts registrations and have limitations. This is simple install with a lot of tweaks for free. It works with APO which none of the others did thats just huge W.
Doesn't the virtual audio cable cause latency?
@Dirkaios
4 жыл бұрын
It adds some latency for sure. You can try Voicemeeter instead, by using WDM e reducing the WDM buffer value. Also, if you have 7.1 drivers for your sound card (like, normal Realtek HD drivers installed, for example) you can use it directly, without VBCable.

Thank you so much!
The usual case for me of following just about everything in the video to the letter and it not working :P Even reran HeSuVi install as admin just incase I'd messed up there. Was getting 'stereo' sound, but all the extra 7.1 audio cues were doing nothing. Guessing that my motherboard sound card has 7.1 support, as I applied the the APO direct to my sound card (3.5mm jack output), had the option to configure as 7.1 and the test fully came through - checked the test on the configure screen to ensure the cue directions were correct. No idea if I actually need all this, but since needing to reinstall windows and the razer synapse 2.0 surround was constantly giving a static overlay on reinstall, I'm sticking with this. (Uninstalled the virtual cable drivers since I clearly don't need them) Even if it didn't work out exactly as shown, I always appreciate a properly paced and broken down tutorial video :)
Tried with my hyperx cloud alpha. It works but kinda reduces sound quality? or should i say it "changes" the way it sounds. I couldn't get used to it for a while. In games, 7.1 audio increases immersion but i hear my surroundings and footsteps better with stereo. So I'd only use them in singleplayer games. As for movies, there's no discussion, 7.1 is significantly better. It made watching movies two times better and more fun. But as i said, all hrtf settings kinda muffles the sound which i didn't like it. TL;DR: Use it in singleplayer games and movies. In mp games, stereo is better to hear your surroundings and footsteps.
I'm using the optical out of my Realtek/mobo card to drive a DAC, so I need VB Cable to make HeSuVi work?
Thank you!

@balajiwishvam1324
2 жыл бұрын
it is a 5.1 file that's why instead of mixing through hesuvi is sent straight from media player and so you hear only 2 channels left and right. you need to use windows sonic for that particular device to playback actual 5.1 media files. only then the channels are down mixed to 2 channels where you could hear all simulated surround/Virtual surround. or you could simply switch to crossfeed for those media files.

@Dirkaios
5 жыл бұрын
Not sure on that. Hesuvi uses some configurations in the 8 channels managed by the APO (Equalizer APO). Maybe you can use Equalizer APO for what you need, but it might depend on how these vocals are being mixed in each channel. Also, in Equalizer APO, you can create virtual channels and mix them together....maybe you can have this separation in some way. Not sure if you will need a VST plugin for that (Equalizer APO also has support for that).
I set my VB cable to listen to my headphones on my pc and it seems to work perfectly ....so does that mean its using the internal sound card on my mobo since i couldnt find it on my playback devices

Is your sound card using and set for 7.1 drivers in Windows? If not, you may not receive correct surround data from several games. It makes sense because you will have the 7.1 virtualization correctly configured and compatible with most games - just like a full 7.1 speaker set, but properly virtualized down to stereo, with more precise direction cues. Also, 44100 or 48000hz because impulse responses used in convolving are recorded at this samplerates and both these sample rates are used as standard on most music distribution, games, movies. Also, hi-res doesn't make much sense for human ears, (mostly for studio purposes).

Hello. Very useful tutorial. but I have a couple questions for you. Why did you install VBCable? I guess it's an alternative to VoiceMeeter, but only needed when your soundcard doesn't support 5.1/7.1 sound? I'm using X-Fi Titanium HD which handle only 5.1, so using one of the mentioned above soft I can easily get 7.1? Also it looks easier to switch between main stereo soundcard and virtual 7.1 using VBCable than changing stereo to 7.1 in windows sound properties everytime I want to use virtualization.
@Dirkaios
5 жыл бұрын
This is a VoiceMeeter alternative. VoiceMeeter can give you a lot of trouble from time to time and I think it was a little overkill. If you don't need to mix 2 or more physical sound cards and want to keep as simple as possible, VBCable is a better option. ALSO, with this VBCable set, you can apply Equalizer APO + Hesuvi to VBCable, and apply another APO software to your physical sound card (maybe use your own sound card software, VIPER4Windows, or any other...) Example: I using Equalizer APO + HeSuVi on VBCable AND Viper4Windows on my sound card - it all mix together in the end. I installed VBCable because this way you don't need a sound card with 5.1/7.1 support. You can have 7.1 on any stereo sound card/headphones (even bluetooth). Since your sound card supports only stereo and 5.1, you just need stereo to do it. If it works on stereo on Windows, you can have it...no worries about drivers, 7.1 support etc. All you need is: good headphones/headset (semi-open recommended) and stereo sound. And yes, you can switch very easily between VBCable and your sound card - you just have to set your default sound output.
@barbal777

@@Dirkaios Never heard about Viper and I'll give it a try. What functions do you use in this soft? I'll try VBCable, because as I said my soundcard allows me to choose only 5.1 sound and I guess selecting 7.1 can make positioning in games even better. Do you have your favourite surround sound emulation? I tried only CMSS-3D from older Creative soundcards and Dolby Headphone when I was testing Xonar DX. I preferred CMSS-3D over DH, but I saw that HeSuVi gives access to many more systems like Sennheiser GSX, Windows Sonic etc. I have some good headphones - Philips Fidelio X2, AKG K712, AKG K701.

@Dirkaios

I can remember a few reasons (it's probably only one of them): 1. Make sure you ran everything as admin. Make sure you are using the CABLE Input as your default sound card for Windows 2. Something could be changing your audio settings for the CABLE Input (virtual audio card) to Stereo in the windows "configure" button. Try right-clicking at sound tray icon > Sounds > Playback > select CABLE input > Configure button > if Stereo is selected, change it to 7.1 > next,next,finish. Also, in properties button, make sure your the "Advanced" tab settings are kept to something like 16-24bit and 44100 - 48000mhz and "Enable Audio Enhancements" is checked. PS: Just to clarify - your real sound card must be set to Stereo, but CABLE Input (the virtual sound card), must be set to 7.1 3. Sometimes, Equalizer APO doesn't get along with other sound card software with APO based fx. Maybe Equalizer APO it is not active at your CABLE Input for some reason. Re-check the "Configurator" window. Make sure the checkbox for your sound card at Configurator.exe IS checked when you restarted Windows. After retrying all and for some bizarre reason you cannot set this, you can try using the "Troubleshooting options (use only in case of problems)" checkbox below and try other settings. Also, in last case, there's a software called APO Driver from PureSoftApps, which contains a tool called FX Configurator, that helps to change the APO software for your sound card. It is free and you can only select the FX Configurator tool at the install moment. After installed, you have to load Fx Configurator > In Data Flow, click Render > In Endpoints, find the sound card (CABLE input) > under "Effects and processing mode configurations" you Load External Config > find Equalizer_APO ini file > confirm the pop-up with Yes > hit "Apply Effect and Processing Mode Configurations" button > then hit "Restart Windows Audio Service" button. This way, the FX Configurator tool will make sure your sound card will receive the APO processing for that specific software which you loaded with the ini file.

We tested with Beyerdynamic MMX 300 and Sony MDR 7506, both headphones remained silent and no sound. It's not because of the headphones or the sound card, because I can hear everything with the normal settings. It's a shame actually, nice idea but unfortunately not useful for me, really a shame.

@@sanj2454 If Hesuvi installation can't find your Equalizer APO, just unzip the Hesuvi install with 7-zip. Grab the "HeSuVi" folder and put it at C:\Program Files\EqualizerAPO\config\ then just run Hesuvi.exe inside "C:\Program Files\EqualizerAPO\config\HeSuVi\". When you run, it will add an entry to your Equalizer APO config file and you can set things in Hesuvi's interface. IMO, Hesuvi is far better than SSC (Spatial Sound Card) now called "Ashampoo Sounstage".

You don't need to set VBCable as your default mic. Just use your mic as default. VBCable will output to your output device anyway.
you did it kinda different then me. if i installed the apo directly into my sound cards and not using the virtual cable? should i get any downgrade in performance? 🤔
@Dirkaios

If your sound card supports 7.1 in drivers, you can apply it directly. Performance wise, it should be even better since you have one less software/driver running (although, it might depend on how good the sound card drivers are programmed...).
I did not play the audio test, yet someone spoke beside me...

Yes. That's because you're getting the already processed result in stereo (binauralized/spatialized).
This works but also adds latency. You don't want that if you're competitively gaming
The cable input device only has stereo sound option.

@@okashabehlim5923 The old sound control panel can be reached by winkey + R > mmsys.cpl .From the old sound control panel, you should be able to hit the configure button once you selectd the "Cable Input" virtual device there (all this in the Playback tab). If you select Cable Input, hit Configure and you have only stereo, something is very, VERY wrong on your installation, therefore, you should try reinstalling VBCable.
do you need vbcable? Can't you just setup your windows audio as 7.1 instead of making a new fake audio device or whatever?
@Dirkaios

You don't need it, if your sound device/card support 7.1 channels in their drivers (most onboard Realtek chips for desktops do). Then, you can apply eqAP and Hesuvi directly to the sound device. The VBCable method is just the safest hassle free for any stereo device (but adds a bit of latency).

@@Dirkaios I see. My pc37x does support 7.1 weirdly enough if I remember right it only supported 5.1 in the past but everything is good then for my situation right? No need for VBCable

@@John9tv If you see 7.1 surround at the "configure" button, then you should be good to test EqAPO and Hesuvi applied directly to your device. sourceforge.net/p/hesuvi/wiki/Help/#71-virtualization .If you see 7.1 speaker setup, it really depends on how the drivers will behave now. I have tested a few drivers and found some really bad ones, like some versions of Corsair iCue where the result was really bad. In that case, VBCable was a better alternative with no specific driver at all (just stereo and whatever Windows detect).

@@Dirkaios You're saying there is a difference between 7.1 surround and 7.1 speaker setup or did you just use both words for the same meaning? I do have 7.1 surround. It's in Danish but it still says it.

If the game support SASAPI (Windows Sonic API), then, you can use DTS Headphone:X fully (very few games support it). Many games support 7.1 or 5.1 surround these day, so, it will be better stick with Hesuvi.

@@AreYouKenneth OpenAL vs Dolby - again, depends on the implementation. If you can use OpenAL, you should try OpenAL-Soft instead. If you're implementing audio in a game, maybe you should stick with Steam Audio for a more recent 3D audio technology.
