Wow' thanks JT. IF you had not made this SPECIFIC video, I couldn't have convinced my father that I could install it. You see, I bought this cabinet and sink recently for a rental and (since my so-called 'handy' man couldn't install it) I've had it in my garage since then. I recently moved into my father's house to support his wish to age in place and began a basement reno. He balked at my fitting it myself UNTIL I showed him this video. Thanks to you, I have been (allowed to, and...) able to do most of the project myself. Please forgive the gush when I say that I'm thrilled that an honest, skilled tradesman has found such great success by doing something that straight-up helps people. And you are Canadian-- which makes me an even prouder one!

The best part of this video is seeing that you ran into issues and tripped for a second, but were able to get it right in the end. No studs behind the drywall, dropping your tape measure... The same crap normal dudes run into during these type of projects. Thanks for these vids!

@@HomeRenoVisionDIY Hey, do you know if kitchen faucets from ikea fit bathroom sinks? I checked the height, distance, it's fine, i only ask for the diameter of the base. Since they seem same diameter, and ikea doesn't give any measurements on the online pdf documents unfortunately. (i can't go to store personally)

Awesome tutorial on IKEA product. I worked for the company for 4yrs and did assembly in the store and progressed to starting my own Handyman assembly for IKEA products. It's very lucrative in California, then had to relocate due to bitter divorce to South Carolina. Totally different species, I would love to work with customers again doing the same type of work. I watch a lot of your videos and their spot on and your humbleness to teach DIY about the craft you're BLESSED with and LOVE to share. GOD BLESS YOU and your family and keep up the GREAT work.

Getting ready to install my 7th and 8th IKEA Godmorgon sink this weekend. The instructions recommend drilling holes and wood screws through the back support into the stud locations. I usually use those super duty wall hangers. I would have liked to see Jeff connecting the drain. The drain piece has been the biggest hassle with these, for me.

I love IKEA methodology (and their prices). I also greatly admire Jeff Thorman’s astute practicality and his ability to call that spade an actual spade. For me, these two philosophies on the same video creates a masterpiece. There are lots of good KZreads and a few masterpiece KZreads. This is one of the latter.

This can be secured to wall without opening the drywall. Those 4 metal brackets have additional sets of holes to be set back 1/2 inch to accommodate horizontal wood support which secures to the studs. The brackets then secure to the two horizontal wood supports. Ikea does not supply the wood supports so you will need to cut it yourself. The optional ikea legs should also be used for additional support.

@26:45, the little rubber “plug” sitting on your left, goes over the end of that key tool. The rubber creates plenty of grip on the overflow flange and really lets you snug it up tight. Great install Jeff. If you’ve got a few minutes of patience, and half a brain, it’s easy to see that Ikea stuff is VERY thoroughly thought out and engineered. Albeit Scandinavian so slightly different in some aspects, it really is insanely good value for the money.

Well, it’s 2020 and this guide still works. I had to walk a lady through the install yesterday at IKEA while i was getting my new vanity/sink combo, wish I had known about this video. NOTE: IKEA now will include a free rubber adapter to reduce the size of the waste pipe to their included trap pipe, ASK FOR IT in the bathroom section planing counter/desk.

Nice work, Jeff. The only note I'd make on the Ikea furniture is that you should always make sure that the cams are accessible (I noticed that one of your strips had the cams facing words the wall), And these things can work loose over time, so I always want to be able to tighten them up without haviing to uninstall.

I stumbled across one of your videos several months ago when preparing to do a major renovation in a rental property. Since then I’ve continually come back to your channel as a reliable source of information, advice and tricks of the trade. Your presentation style if really clear and understandable - and realistic. The fact that you don’t cut out the times when you struggle with IKEA instructions or accidentally drop the measuring tape down the backside of the wall are great! Your credibility goes up in my books - and reassures me that I can complete the jobs despite all the stupid things that occur during the project. Thanks for these awesome videos - they really are fantastic.

The vanity support needs more than just supporting the downward force. The vanity will exert a torquing force on that 2x4. I would tie in that added support to a stud or just put front legs on the vanity.

I see every video to install a wall mount vanity, people are cutting out the drywall in order to add more studs. this is not necessary in many cases. you can buy T and L shape brackets that will join to the vanity, as long as the studs don't exceed the width of the vanity (otherwise they will be visible which you don't want). the T bracket connects to the stud and extends towards to the frame of the vanity. and the L bracket will be secured to the vanity and joined with the T bracket. it's a little hard to explain but it's actually fairly easy and very strong support. also I recommend putting screws through the top horizontal beam of the vanity if there are any studs underneath. just extra security.

One thing that, if clarified, would help complete your tutorial is to discuss whether a similar metal drain system to the Ikea version can be pieced together when using a non Ikea sink/faucet since the drawers are not notched for conventional plumbing.

If you open a hole in the wall with a multitool you will find that behind the lath there is a 2x4 cavity just like this one. You just need a longer screw. If your vanity is going on an outside wall then you may have solid wood to screw to behind the lath.

I see a lot of installers install the sink in than rest of the pieces like the tap and pipes ect. Is there a reason why we can't install all the pieces that attaches to the sink first to make installation easier than tighten the pieces once we have everything aligned?

I would use the leg supports that are available, heavy drywall anchors on the metal brackets and then screw the back support pieces to the studs. The legs defeat the open concept to some degree but they aren’t to obtrusive. Love your videos by the way. Cheers.

Easier to attach the faucet while the sink is off the cabinet.... place sink on its side or up side down attach faucet and such easy..... once sink is attached to cabinet tight up the faucet

Sure the weight will transfer down to the floor via that right beam. But the center of gravity of the cabinet is way in front of the wall of course. If you did the left side the same way, and let someone sit on the cabinet, it would just rip the whole drywall out and everything falls forward onto the floor. Nice videos anyway. Good tip of the laser level.

You da man! Two requests: (yes, I'm being greedy) 1) How to cut without taping 2) Flooring types explanation/good/bad/comparison -- ie laminate vs hardwood vs engineered. I think you're ready for general "how to" and relevant to your field product comparison and review videos. i.e. Milwaukee or Makita impact drivers? What level has served you the best? I remember one new job I started, brought the tools, the guys, put a bunch of levels on a table. Each level was showing a different reading. Scrapped all of them. Anyhow -- true pleasure watching your work. Coming from a real house flipper, not a seen on TV one. Thank you.

It's good how you always chuckle every now and then whilst you work, I swear at screws and call pieces of wood all the names under the sun, it hasn't been a job worth doing unless I've sworn at least 10 times. I find if you're trying to undo a tight nut etc. calling it a B***ard repeatedly eventually does the trick! You must have better stress management skills. Nice videos!

Love this video, thanks so much! I'm getting ready to install this vanity in a couple weeks so it's very timely. I'm installing subway tile on the wall behind the vanity, so I'm thinking I'll cut out the drywall and mount 3/4" strips of wood between 2 studs. This should leave the wood flush with the finished tile and give me a place to mount the vanity hanging hardware.
