• Drill Bits
• Hole Saw
• Electrical Wire
• 3/4" Wood Plywood Scrap
• Saw to Cut Plywood
• Primer/Paint

I am convinced there is no one on youtube that knows how to properly install an exterior light.

time for a pro to show everyone. Ive noticed this too the more i keep looking for ideas. I appreciate them making the videos but most arent doing it right. Luckily a lot of electricians are chiming in to tell them what needs to be corrected.
A pancake surface mount box would have worked here, with extra room for the wire nuts created by the metal housing. I would prefer that rather than cutting a big hole for a flush mount junction box. It is very nice looking. The code issue is the fixture wires now run through the wall without a cover, those wires aren't approved to run inside a wall without conduit or cover. It would be fairly easy to fix, just fish a short length of Romex from the new box through the wall to a pancake junction box, surface mounted on the beautiful wooden backplate. The pancake would be completely hidden by the metal housing, those are usually designed to cover a standard size pancake box. To be technical you could use outside rated NM wire. Cable connectors at the entrance to each box, with silicone or duct seal to prevent water entry. Ground the pancake box to supply ground with a loop on a screw, terminate ground with wirenut to fixture ground wire, and wirenut hot and neutral. An electrician would probably have fished romex from the original plug up to a new manual switch, from there to a hole in the wall, then mounted as above. Those sensor driven lights tend to fail after a few years, so it's good to have manual control without needing a ladder.

spelunkerd thanks for posting this. Your suggestions sound like the sensible way to do it safely and follow codes. I am doing something similar and didn’t know about those boxes so thanks for the tip. I’m not sure why these guys wanted a JBox up high on their interior wall. Maybe they will put a decoration over the cover plate. 🤷🏼♂️ video could have done better to illustrate NEC and why they did this I so strangely.

The lack of an outside junction box is iffy but Romex wire can be run without conduit, that's what it is designed for. You never pull Romex through conduit.
And clear caulking around the light bracket to help keep the water out Good job!

I’m a fan. Great vid!
would appreciate it if you could make a video of how to install a security camera mount on wood exterior siding...Thank you
Nicely done,thank you.
What kind of screws did you use to mount the block onto the vinyl siding? Into stud? @4:00
1. don't you need a ground fault receptacle (GFCI) unless the circuit is already GFCI protected? 2. As important since this is a retrofit, would you also not need arc fault protection? ("AFCI")?

@@DadandSonDIY Oh ok. Thank you.
Great video awesome job
I’m looking to add something like his above my garage, 3 of them to be exact. It has never been wired before in those areas. Would need to drill into siding, and drywall, and run wire somewhere. Is this something that you would recommend a general contractor do or a electrician? I’m just curious if a electrician is skillful enough to do all the drilling

A licensed electrician should know what they're doing and how to drill the holes

You should get a piece of aluminum or galv steel and bend/cut it to shape, then paint, to prevent water damage over time. Think of it like a little roof for your base plate. I typically would call it a drip edge flash plate.
Great video guys. This is a very good diy video. High speed saves time.

Does the light have the same angle as the siding?or is it level

It is unlevel. Same angle as siding. This is only amateur installation.
Excellent tutorial!

What about the vapour barrier on the inside and the moisture barrier on the outside ? Making big holes like that is against the code in Canada. One needs a vapour barrier gang box on the inside. One needs to address the moisture barrier on the outside.

Always follow your local codes and only attempt what you feel comfortable doing!

@@DadandSonDIY I like that you are a dad and son DIY team. That is awesome! 😎👍However, you didn’t install the light to the NEC code and probably not to your local building code. As several have mentioned in the comments, your junction box should be attached directly to the light housing; not fished into a the wall bay into the junction box. Your fancy wooded wall plate also wasn’t properly flashed, wrapped and sealed to prevent wood rot and corrosion from entering the wall bay. When this shorts out in corrosion in 15-30 years it’s because you didn’t follow code. However, as a builder, it’s a good policy to always research how to do it to code (or above code) or ask a professional. Good luck! 🏠 🔨
Why isn't there any insulation or vapor barrier in your exterior wall?
electrical code?
Where is the switch?

It's built into the light fixture. The light has a sensor that turns it on/off based on the amount of daylight outside.

They now have bulbs with the photo sensor built in, so you don’t need a special light fixture. Just use the bulb in any standard light fixture and you have light from dusk to dawn.
lights wired into a plug box what's wrong with this picture?
Wouldn’t pass code. Surprised KZread doesn’t have to take these videos down.
Great job! ... you used a lot of "we" in the narrates, maybe the "we" is referring to you holding the phone and your dad doing the job lol
Are you Indian!
Waaay too complicated with about 50 steps. No sense of what tools/material is needed, before the project begins. Too bad that couldn't be explained in the beginning.
So you thought this video was a great idea to show people how to speed? OMG!
