    Dude, are you dry shave'n me? That door was intended to swing in, not out.You can't just turn it around. the combo sill (threshold) is angled to keep water that runs down the door outside. You think you had problems with dry rot before? Just wait. Why was no sealant used under the threshold? Why no drip cap? Six inch flashing should have been stapled to the jambs edge before reinstalling the molding. Why didn't you plumb the door frame? How come the hinge side of the jamb was not shimmed? The strike should always be shimmed. Oh, nice move raising the jamb to get the proper clearance. Only problem is when you step on the sill as you go in and out, it will separate from the jamb leg, not to mention you broke the seal underneath. Oh, my bad, I forgot that you never laid a bead of sealant from the get-go.Man, I could go on and on. Now, go buy 1 1/2 sets of NRP (non removable pin) hinges cuz they need to be replaced.

    Yes Dustin, you're really fast, but you're very sloppy. As Terry Douglas said, you should've used an outswing door. Standard, unprotected hinges will rust out and could be knocked out easily to gain entry to the house. You don't break the shims off like that. And what about caulking? You're fired!

    Threshold deflecting water facing in, with no sealant beneath just for starters. Buy a level. Set the hinge side first, taking into consideration existing conditions, like the vinyl siding. Make sure the hinge side is not low. I just got home from reinstalling a door set backwards like this one. If you want to break into this guy's shed addition, just pop the hinge pins which are now exposed on the exterior..

    This video was so much better than the Lowe's one. And I bought my door from them. You did the exact same thing I needed to do, which was to reverse an in swing, left hinge door so it can swing outwards. (Which by the way a Lowe's worker said it could not be done). I don't care that my higes are on the outside cause the old door was the same thing and I had no problems. Your video is great!

    although i appreciate the fact that a lot of people noticed this is a bogus video. Most of you still missed the main points. ok, yes, its a shed, and yes should have been and right outswing door with outswing hinges, and yea, no plum, no level, also, no caulking under the sill (even though its the wrong still, need outswing bumper sill). What gets me is the simple stuff that was missed, no exterior caulking, the corners on the brickmould have a 1/8 gap between them, no foam (although he left no space for it, he stripped about all the screws he put in the hinges, he tossed he garbage EVERYWHERE, amongst other things, this is a travesty, this is the reason i do what i do and take pride in all my installs.

    slight issues noted with this install.... 1. hinges shoukd always be shimmed to keep them all in line with each other. you have squeeks coming from the hinges binding due to lack of shims. 2. screws on latch jamb shoukd always be through the shims, or you will bow the frame. 3. if door is raised, a shim should be placed under sill of the threshold can be comprimised over time if someme steps on it. 4. handle should go on prior to brick moulding, to ensure no tweeking is needed. 5. under threshold should have 3 beads of caulk to prevent water penetration, before setting door but after fit is verified. 6. outswing doors are different than inswing, should not be interchanged for obvious reasons. all in all.....great work! Doors are not easy to install

    Hey Dustin! RJ here again. Tryin to get motivated for continued home projects. You always attach your hinge side directly to the studs, correct? I like that. I'm in the process of reinstalling an exterior door to my patio. We had a slider there. I had two windows and a door put in, and all the sheathing replaced on that wall. I had that crappy "Celotex" pegboard junk. I also want to patch the slab foundation since it was relief-cut for the sill plate of the sliding door that was there. Weird stuff they did 46 years ago! I hope you get what I'm saying about that sill area. The foundation has a "step" cut into it where the treated 2x6 sill for the slider sat in. It's about 3/4" lower than the wall sill.

    @@homemend Hey, I noticed you took a lot of heat for not doing a "This Old House" class job on that door. Well I hung a door on my garage based on the fundamentals shown in your video and it worked fine for me. I know there were some mistakes and so forth, but it was on a shed so it wasn't a big deal. Hopefully not a shed where anything important will be put. I would assume more care would be put in to installing the door on a house. For as much crap as Home Mender is getting, I've seen a lot worse around here. There were some useful tidbits though-- hiding screws behind weather trim was a good idea. I did laugh about the "And we're done.. No, not really". LOL. Well, I'm probably paraphrasing. It was entertaining at least. One question though: was there wood on the bottom side of the metal threshold? And was that threshold directly touching concrete? I know wood is not supposed to touch concrete because it will make the wood rot from moisture-- since concrete is very porous and brings in moisture.

    Can't believe that he finished the job and didn't even once use a level. My ex helped me put a pre-hung exterior door. Couldn't finish the job. Problem!? The doe including the frame was 37.75 and the opening also was 37.75. Question: at what stage should we remove the locking device on the door's knob hole!? Is it to remain on the door until the door is plumed and leveled?

  • @homemend

    @homemend

    Hey Ira....it doesn't matter if a door is level if it shuts smoothly, seals and locks..thats just my opinion. i usually remove the plastic Shipping pin that holds the door closed as soon as i set it in the hole. that way you can immediately open and close the door to see how and where to place it exactly for best operation... i hope the video helped you and thanks so much for watching!

    You can not install an inswing door in an outswing door configuration. You should have at least installed NRP hinges. The sill on an outswing door unit is sloped to the outside also.

    I'm a retired, white-collar federal employee with a BA in English, and even I know that this is a terrible installation for manifold reasons, all of which you'll see if previous comments. Was this intended to be a Saturday Night Live take-off, or is this guy just totally inept. Imagine being to poor homeowner he just screwed. Even if he did the install for free, the homeowner will have many reasons to lament he choice of installers in the future, possibly the near future. What idiot would install an exterior door with the hinges on the outside?!!!

    You just put a inswing door as a outswing. The seal isn't designed for that. The hinges will rust as well. You didn't put any kind of sealant under the threshold. A screw in the hinges are easier to adjust and doesn't scare up the jamb. Instead of raising the threshold pry the right hinge corner to the strike side. Raising the threshold with no sealant allows water to penetrate through. Leading to a rotted jamb. That is a stock lowes door. Those jambs aren't rotted proof.

GOOD JOB Thank you I was prepared to over-think this job Im going to pull the door off today. Its 30º today but if it only takes a few min, 10 mins than I will snap to it. Jamb ? jam? .. yes is on the exterior side of things. maybe the person (american packrat) would like to be able to open the door to the little room even after he/she fills it with there … valuables. plus anyone can kick a door in but not everyone could as easily fashion a rig to rip it off.
