How To Install A Wifi Thermostat With Out And With C Wire
Тәжірибелік нұсқаулар және стиль
In today's video we are taking a look at how easy and simple it is to install a WiFi Thermostat with or with out a C Wire. The C wire is used in many systems, because it is the one that gives constant energy to your device, in conventional non WiFi systems , its usually required a battery, but because this system requires more than just a back light that old systems can provide by a couple of batteries. This newer system need more juice to power the back light and for WiFi.

In this latest installment we take a look at how to install this particular system with or with out the c wire. To be able to do that we use a 24 volt c wire electrical outlet power supply, which is able to provide the juice that we need , even if our system does not provide that much important wire.
Using this particular adapter gives us not only the c wire but also the rh wire, which means if your system has a jumper you may require to remove it. Because now the adapter provides that extra wire as well. Verify you owners manual if needed.
On this video you can easily install any thermostat no matter the brand or type. At the end of the day its a basic installation. We were able to hide the adapter cable inside the wall, making the cosmetic look alot better.
If you do have the c wire then your installation is going to be a lot easier. I you also have additional wires, you can follow the same steps by labeling them and attaching it to the new thermostat .

Love the humor added. Very detailed and no chit-chat “filler talk”, right to the point and this video handled my problem exactly. We ordered the C adapter for our 2-wire boiler steam heat system (as designed in 1924 wiring). We won’t give up our steam heat (love it in winter) - for a furnace. Thanks for a great video and adding ha-ha points to it.
This provides accurate, clear and precise info. (I value videos that are edited for brevity and clean, uncluttered screen shots.)
You saved the day. Like a few others I was ready to give up. The C wire behind my old thermostat was not connected and had no power anyway. I did not want to mess with the control board inside my air handler. So I used your string and nut method to run the wires from an external power supply through the wall. It worked perfectly. Thank you!
You are a lifesaver my guy, I have tried so many different ways to get my upgraded Wi-Fi thermostat to work, I had bought a transformer to get the C terminal to work and nothing, not even my boiler guy couldn't get it going , I was about to give up and go back to the old thermostat until I saw your video and you hit it right on the button when you said to take off the jumper wire and install the other wire 👍🏽 It fired up, lights came on and joy, happiness all over my face, 👍🏽👍🏽great job.
Thank you this was the best video I saw on this topic. This is the exact thermostat I am installing. Your direction was clear and helpful. And you are the king of your castle 🏰 👑!
Dude this is like the best information video I think I’ve seen on KZread. Straight to the point and you don’t mess around by freaking love it you should have 1 million subs
Wow what a life saver I just bought a brand new smart WiFi thermostat to replace my old analog AC thermostat and I just found out my old analog Mercury thermostat don't have that Wire to C and this video is very helpful to explained what to do in this scenario. Great job for sharing it. 👍
Thanks for this! Out of the ten videos I watched for a no c-wire system. Yours was by far, the most informative and entertaining install video. Thanks a lot. Now, I need to go to the dollar store to fix the extra hole in my wall! Or, I think I just may leave it, because I am the king of my castle!

Great Video! Thanks! Your explanation was simple but also very helpful. A lot of other videos they edit out the actual work from the video, I don’t understand why they do that. I could tell by the quality of the video & audio in your video that i wasn’t going to have to watch anymore videos after this one. Good job. Thanks again. I also liked your “king of the castle” comments
"At the end of the day, you're the king of your castle." Love it! Thanks for the informative video.
This is the video I desperately needed. Thank you so much for explaining it so clearly.
Great video and very helpful. For those of you using a separate power source other than a "C" wire, make sure you're using a minimum of 24 Volt AC or 24 VAC power cord. I thought I was using the correct power cord until I realized it was only a 9 VAC but not before a total meltdown on my part.
Vert neat and helpful! Thank you! I had no idea those AC adapters for the additional wires existed.
This video saved us money. Looked at the wires in the wall and found a fifth wire. Thank you so much for mentioning that. All other videos did not say anything about it.

This is one of the best videos for this thermostat installation! clear, to the point , easy to follow. Thank you
You saved me!!!!! I tried this and it worked great! Thanks you so much!!
I don't know how many times I've watched this video. Just updated my thermostat to one with Wifi, the company video was in no way helpful. I stumbled onto this and it is the most helpful video around....now I really am the King/Queen of my castle. Thank you so much!!!!!
I have a garage ceiling mounted gas furnace/heater. I have a two wire honeywell thermostat. The current thermostat is just a switch to enable the furnace to fire up to the desired temperature. On my wifi honeywell Thermostat which connections would be used as switch just like the original. (have the C wire adapter as well). Great video..very informative Thanks
Thanks a lot for this video. It was really helpfull. Just one question: Can I install 2 thermostats and select from my device which one to work? Thanks in advance.
So your little tip of blue wire being pushed back was so helpful!! We looked again and found it! Easier setup now.

Your the man thanks , so I didn’t have the c wire so instead of using a external transformer, I went to the air handler and use the 2 entra wires in the back to connect to the air handler transformer and conect it to the c and rc and works well.
Thank you bro. Watched before installing mine. Didn’t know it would be so easy and your humor is great.
Best step by step and very well explained video on both the adapter and the thermostat thank you
Thank you for this excellent video! One of the best how-tos I've viewed, because: 1. You get right to the point! 2. Your instructions are clear! 3. Great video supports your verbal instructions. 4. You know what the hell you're talking about! Still, I think I'm screwed! Going to check for extra wires when I get home tonight - I think I only have two: red + white. Hoping to find the C wire hiding inside the wall behind unit.

Replacing and old thermostat that has only two wires: In our case the old thermostat had two wires (Red and White). I connected the Red wire to the R terminal on the thermostat and the white to the W thermostat terminal. I removed the jumper provide with the thermostat between R and RC. Our gas burning hot water heating system had a relatively new "ARM-2P Control with Priority" unit that has a connector for 24 VAC and Common. I ran a new wire from the heating system to the thermostat. It had a black and a white wires. I Connected the black to the 24 VAC on the ARM and to the C wire on the thermostat. The white wire is connected to the Common on the ARM and to the RC on the thermostat. All works great.

SUPER helpful video. Thanks!!
You're video helped me to replace my old mercury thermostat with new Honeywell WiFi Thermostat. In my case, I had 4 wires (W,G,R,Y they were not labeled as color) not C wire. As you mentioned, I looked in the drywall and found unused wires(blue, brown, black) but non of them worked as 'C' because those weren't connected to Furnace Power Supply. So, I connected one of the available color wire to the Furnace power supply board on 'C' socket and same color other End wire in the thermostat as in "C" (along with W,G,R,Y) in family room. Wallah ! it works... Thank You

Great video! I happen to have this exact model :) and am using the same C Wire Adapter. My manual confirmed the removal of the jumper. Everything fired up as expected, app worked great too. Thanks again!
on that model, can you lock the thermostat to a set temp from the app so people at the house can not change the temp? Will the app notify you if the temp is changed on the thermostat?
Thanks for the reminder about who's the king around here!
Great video, Thanks!
thanks for the video, I have the L8148E, and I want to change my thermostat for the RTH6580WF. I only use the heat and my old thermostat works with two wires. where you should connect the wires for the other thermostat. Thanks
Thanks so much for the video. But I have a question. My old thermostat had 4 wire like in the video and I bought a new wifi Bosch thermostat and is requiring a C wire. If I put the ac adapter like you showed in the video, the ac adapter have 2 wires, which one will be connected to the C plug and the other wire where is going to be? Can you help me on that. Will appreciate that
Thanks for explaining this so well, I will be adding my upgraded thermostat to my castle today

So this is the problem I'm having on my old thermostat I have the following wires connected G, Y, RC -jumper to RH, W. On the thermostat, but the I have the following wires that can be connected in this layout (below), I'm not sure which to connect to, even if I connect the old thermostat RC to R and use the adapter you mention it still does not work S A S O/B Y W2 Y2 E G W C K U R U RC
I laughed during this, thank u for making it with humor!!!!
How do you cover that hole in the wall? Mention that there are alternatives that require wiring at heating unit that are neater, if more complex, than this method. Thanks!
Informative, definitely a video to watch
Hi thank you for the video. I have a problem I canot choose Em heat for my thermostat. Just Cool and heat. I have a Thermopump and use electricity in the winter when is too cold. With my old thermostat I can choose it. I try many option. Thank you to help me.
You saved my ass! I found the C wire hidden in the wall under electrical tape. I though I just spent $200 for nothing, thanks. 🙏
Can I connect my Ecobee to Wifi without the HVAC unit and only using an adaptor for RC and C wire for power?
Maaaaan TY a lot! Made the purchase fast and thanks again!!!!!
Grate job ,I got it thank u so much.
If you dont want to drill holes in your walls. You can plug in the 24v transformer to power near your furnace or (where the other end of your control wires are). Run the wires from your transformer to unused wires such as Black as common, and blue as Rc. Then go back upstairs to the thermostat and connect them accordingly.

But if you have an unused wire, just connect it to the Common terminal on the furnace control board, then obviously the other end to "C" at the t-stat.
@robhalcomb3
3 жыл бұрын
True but the adapter is for those who dont have extra wires. If your stat happens to be close to the furnace like in most apartments then you can just run a new stat wire from transformer to the common. If it's far away then the adapter is a good fit.
@videorobo
2 жыл бұрын
@@tonyming6969 Yes, THIS is the correct information. If you DO have an "extra wire" going from the furnace to the thermostat, you don't need the transformer. The furnace can already supply the "common" connection. Just connect the "extra wire" to the "common" connection inside the furnace, and the same wire to the "common" connection on the new thermostat.
@Shibu11229
Жыл бұрын
@@tonyming6969 Yes. And if you have the wire in your furnace and can not find the C terminal you may be able to just attach it to a screw that is attached to the metal case of the furnace.
Thank you very much. this was a simple and very understandable how too. I did run into a complication that you can help with. I installed the Honeywell unit you showed in the video. I will be using it to simply control a circulating pump on my heating system. The pump controls a snow melt system under a sidewalk. I chose this method to make it Wi-Fi. Accessible. So, this is a brand-new installation (no existing wires). I added the power adaptor that you recommended, and it is plugged in, has power at the outlet, and is hooked to the "R" and "Rc" but is not lighting up; it appears to be unpowered. Any suggestions? Thanks in advance. Barry

Can you still use the wifi feature of the thermostat even if you only connect it with 2 wires: red/black or white/black ones? In only have 2 wires in my set up
i have an older 4 wire honeywell chronotherm 3 and just bought the honeywell wifi model and the 24 volt ac adapter. I followed this video to the letter and it didn't work. it was like the fan was the only thing turning on. I set the cool to 65 and the room temp started out at 79 and it got to 82 before I gave up. I just put the old one back in and it's blowing cold now.gas heat furnace and central ac unit on the roof
Hi Installed this thermostat with the adapter to my AC only central air cooling unit. everything works except, the AUTO feature of the fan. The unit will go on only if the fan is set to "ON" . When the fan is set to AUTO, the unit does not turn on when system is set to "cool" Any suggestions ? I tried moving the G wire to the K terminal and that did not work
Where do I put the "white" wire which was labeled "E" on my old system? I notice that "E" is on this wifi therm it is on the bottom labeled as AUX/E.
how did you determine which of the unused wires was the C Wire?
I will be installing the Honeywell RTH6500 Wi-Fi Thermostat and have a few questions, my Central Heat and AC system is a older one that uses HEAT STRIPS inside the unit for the heating. My wiring is 18/5 with the C wire wrapped around the others and not being used, I haven't checked the inside of the Handler yet to see if I can hook it up to the terminal block yet. I'm wondering if I can take a "jumper wire" just at the Thermostat and run it from the G wire (Fan) to the C terminal without doing anything inside the Handler itself? By doing it this way I "Should" be able to still use the Fan Only and have power for the C wire......Correct?? I figure seeing how the majority of the work is at the Thermostat why do the extra work if I can just run a jumper, that and basically I'm being a lazy bastard and not wanting to remove the 10 Bolt-head screws and reinstall them on Handler's cover panel. My other question is, is there a Ground wire at the Thermostat, if so which one would it normally be (color or letter wise)? I want to use a Multimeter to check for the 24V power?
If I find extra wires how do I know which one is the C wire? Is it a certain color? My thermostat is next to my water heater closet. Do you think I can locate a c wire near the water heater closet? Thanks.
Ok once you have the extra wire hooked up to the C wire. I’m guessing you hook it up in the furnace also

My old thermostat has 2 wires at R and W. No C wire. However, there are 2 more wires that goes all the way to furnace but these not connected to anything. Should I use these for CWire?
Great video, thx
I have a 4 wire setup. There's a small red wire going from the RH to the RC. Then there's a separate RC wire from the wall. Will I need to duplicate the RH to RC bridge on the new thermostat?
Gotta question, so I used an AC adapter on my Honeywell RTH6500WF thermostat since I didn’t have a C-Wire. I got power to my thermostat. Waited like 20 min and my cooling system never turned on even though it said it was on. It was like 80° in my house and the temp kept rising and it wouldn’t turn the system on. I reinstalled my old thermostat and the cooling turned on right away. What do you think it is? The base plate is identical to my old thermostat so I just quickly pulled the wires for the adapter out and put the jumper back in and reinstalled my thermostat to get it going again.
Best Video Ever!!!
If my old thermostat has a wire going to the RC post and a wire going to the RH post what do I connect the second wire from the adapter to?
So just installed this today mynold thermostat had an off n on switch where is it on this new one? I don't want the furnance on all the time only when I want to for now
What if there’s no AC adapter or any wires in the wall , I have an rc (empty) and an rh (occupied) what to I bridge the c to? I have to continuesley change the batteries once a week and it’s getting very expensive
I installed my RTF9585WTF thermostat a few years back along with the adapter for "C" wire. It has worked fine all these years. But now the screen has gone blank. I think it may be adapter that is issue. How can I check to see if adapter is OK?
So. R and R C coming off your external Transformer which is running the thermostat but you still getting power from the original Transformer in the basement if you will to turn on the heat air condition fan is this what you mean ?
my old thermostat didnt use the C wire as it used batteries....but it was in the wall behind the plate when i went to install this new one..so i thought it would be easy...but even with the C wire included in with the R,YGN, thermostat wouldnt work..can the C wire not be connnected in the furnace wiring for some reason?
Thank you. I don’t have a C wire so that was the problem.
Quick question. I will be needing the c-wire adapter. However, my system only has 3 wires, Y, W, & R-RC switch. Will this thermostat still work?

honeywell has compability chart yourhome.honeywell.com/General-Pages/Wi-Fi-Programmable-Thermostat-Home-Compatibility
The "C" connection is just a common or neutral connection but it needs to go back to the equipment low voltage power supply. I would've just used the extra blue wire and checked it at the low voltage supply.
great video
Hi, I have a honeywell thermostat for heating only and would like to install the new WIFI. I have only 2 wires: R/RC joined and O/B. Is there a way to connect a wifi thermostat nest or Honeywell? Does it matter that my cable is figure 8 - means more Amp?
