Thanks for the video! Got mine installed tonight, only ran into one problem, which was having them swapped. At first I didn't realize it and sort of wondered why you'd need the tool since they were easy to install, but after setting them all the way to notch 3 and still not keeping the trunk lid up nor popping it I knew I had done something wrong

Thank you I do not want to hurt myself and your video shows that you do need the right tool.

This was the one part of my restoration project that I didn't get a reference video for when I stripped my car down 2 years ago. I was left scratching my head trying to figure this out. Thankyou for the clip and the upload.

No problem man. Have you done the reassembly yet or did the video come too late? Hopefully it helps. My only regret is the vertical video.

jlizer Re-installed the trunk lid 3 days ago, spent about 10 minutes trying to figure out the torsion bars. Watched your video and they then went straight in......it's obvious how they go with 20/20 hindsight :) Greetings from Barossa Valley, South Australia.

Mate, that frickin' awesome video. Was doing my head in on a disassembled 1966 hardtop how they went. Cheers.

Extremely helpful jlizer and now I need to find this kind of video for my 66 coupe! The torsion bars are slightly different but same principle. I was able to make the "tool" today so happy about that - one step closer! Anyone have such a video to share or can point me in that direction? Will be much appreciated. Thanks again

Wow thanks for this extremely helpful video. I have been fiddling with my torsion bars for a while now and i finally found somebody that says how to do them! Also what color blue is your car? Its gorgeous and I'm looking to paint mine a similar color (sonic blue) but I'm not for sure yet.

Luke Partington Glad it helped you Luke. There is just nothing on the internet showing this. Unfortunately, the only video now showing it has to be a vertical video :( The color of my car is Viper GTS Blue, which was used on the 97 Dodge Vipers. Paint code is PBE.

I just did this job today I put the brand new torsion bar in the hole with the notch too short I use vice grips to hold it and then I took a small sturdy U clamp and clap the cable to my come along to the end the very tip as best as you can get are the other end this is the end that you're going to pull up and set in the locks make sure the crown of the U clamp goes against the brace because the threaded side will hang you up please put two two x fours across the trunk stack to create the best angle for the cable take your come along attach the other end to something very sturdy I used my RV bumper so with the cable attached to the very end Outback torsion bar start cranking slowly use a tire iron to make sure it doesn't get jumped up jammed up when you reach the first lock I would not go to the second or third First Lock if you're very careful it will pop in do same procedure for the other side driver side be very careful of all the wiring and all the crap that's in there this is a very dangerous job don't use an old cable be very leery cuz when you smash down on your cable with that U-joint it's going to get weak make sure you get the very end of that Rod make sure you do not bring the threaded side of that clamp into the brace if you have any problems that the end will not go into the lock use a C-clamp to pull it in I did not have any problems doing it this way it is just very scary at that cable let's go it will take your head off if you got if you're nosing around in there

Wow. I think I actually did it faster than the time it took me to read this. Why not just use the tool?

I guess the method is the same for both sides? Also...@tim beck...I know for sure my '67 is an early one, several parts were more like '66 than '67 so...what was the difference and should I be researching how to do this on a '66?

Edbert2004 Same method for both sides. 66 will probably be similar but the tool is going to be different.

So do the torsion bars cross in the middle? Does anyone know the name the tool? I am working on a 1968 lemans and I think they are the same design that the mustangs have.

The torsion bars cross in the middle, they actually touch. There's no specific name for the tool I'm aware of, just a trunk torsion bar tool.

how do you tell which ones are different? How did you initially install the first bar on the first hinge? You started filming halfway through the process lol.

+jay tyler Jay, I show some pics and give a little more detail in the blog entry here: joshlizer.blogspot.com/2014/12/how-to-install-trunk-torsion-bar.html For me, figuring out which bar to use is trial and error. You have a 50% chance of getting it right :) It's like I explained in the video, if you have to twist the end REALLY far around, you have the wrong bar in.

You will need to make it yourself, I’m not sure if anybody is making it. It’s easy to make; Ive includes the plans in the description.
