    ...... and on a 2/12 pitch too ! The one guy rode his bike to the job and had to wear a foam hat for safety . Any man that does this type of work sees how those ropes just keep getting in the way..... and nearly trips them up . Men..... we had better get this s%@ pushed back...... or very soon we wont be able to make a living .!

    7:15 Why does the curb overhang by 3/4" ...for drywall? And the interior of the curb will simply be painted? Also at 7:15 looks like they installed hangers for the joist headers which were not shown during the interior video shoot.

    Good video but I have to issue you with a STOP card and ask you to take a TOFS...there is more slack in your safety line than the height of the roof meaning you will simply go SPLAT (technical term from oil industry)...

    @DR PHIL agreed...i work ropes on the rigs and it's always getting on or off that cause the issues...but for tv shouldn't they at least be safe...broken back can still happen from 17'

    There is a time ( in an experiencied carpenters thoughts ) when so called " safety equipment " can trip you up and send you off the roof.... not keep you safe...... and people need to use their heads at times .

    Eric R Nope. It isn’t necessary as the dimensional lumber if rubber applied tight, is a good enough insulator to avoid frost or condensation.

    i believe the roof frame curb is not sitting flush with the inside. when they will do drywall inside, it will be zigzag. or is there another soultion to fix that ?

    That flashing job is done so wrong. The rubber should I be pinched under curb with a separate wall sheet or fasteners around the curb and a separate wall sheet. That curb is going to bridge out in the future.

    I can just about bet you that most roofers don't take the time to do this leak proofing. One of my brand new sky lights covered the dining room table this morning with rain water.

    I only do skylights on shingle roofs... I always passed on flat roof installs...I've done too many repairs from other peoples installations...

    @@bigvegass ...Oh, Wes, you silly boy!..A shingle roof is actually harder because of step and head flashings... I don't do them because flat roofs are notorious for leaks and if you go on one and do a repair and the roof gets a leak ANYWHERE you will get the call for it...It's called "limiting liability" ..... You'd understand if you owned a construction business....

    I worked for an old man doing so yard work when I was in highschool. He told me that there’s only 3 guarantees in life. 1.) Death 2.) Taxes 3.) and a flat roof will leak He built his house in the 70’s and made that mistake along with 4 leaky skylights.

    Never seen the code call for screws on hangers.... Also, what sense does it make to have hangers on single joists when the new double joists they're nailed to doesn't use hangers?

    It's because those doubles they were nailed to are sitting on top of load bearing walls. They don't need any hangers.

    I think it's optional rather than code. Structural screws. I prefer them to nails in many cases.

    I wonder of they have skylight into metal roofs. It's hilarious that I have no issues with asphalt, and rubber roofs. Scared of a metal roof screwing it up.

    It fascinates me the difference in other countries. It must be a warm location with the thickness of the insulation in that roof which would be around 80mm here. It must be a very high-performance board for that thickness. Also, any kerbs where I'm from need a min of 25mm insulation as there's nothing preventing cold bridging and that 45-degree edge also made from insulation as opposed to that piece of timber to prevent the same thing. And any flat roof lights require a 3-degree pitch.

    The safety rope on your workers is greater than the height to the ground. So your workers will already fall to the ground, and the insurance will not work ....

    The activator is a catalyst chemical that activates the glue on the non cured rubber to make it stronger and more adherent to the existing epdm roof.

    As a roofer, It is actually easier and safer(leakage wise) to do it the way they did in the video. It is a huge pain to lay new rubber around curbs.

    Please do not apply sealant to the skylight lens. How do you suppose someone to take it off? It has a rubber seal inside the lens. Also you say in the video "it doesn't say to do this"

    I love the way you guys keep working to bring the next generation in and super glad that you include women as well. Also, secretely, don't tell anyone, (shhhh), Tommy is my favorite on This Old House in this generation. Hope you have Carly's (sp?) on the show on the regular. It will attract a younger audience and keep things going. Boy, you can sure tell she's been slinging a hammer for quite awhile, back arm at a strange angle she's hitting with confidence. Wish she could have been in on the end. Remember when Tommy WAs the younger generation? If you didn't know about Tom and Tommy, you'd still be able to tell they worked together a lot, they work like a dream team, like one man with four hands, and they hammer exactly the same.

Pregnant or bring their children to get in the way Bimbos - the men won't do the job(s) right, because all their logic & skills will go straight to their *_"stiff members."_* Not trying to get dirty Afraid to sweat their *_"fake-up"_* off and/or break a sweat Construction *_"illiterate"_* Slow learners Scared to chip a manicured & polished fingernail The rest of Us Women who do construction work will do just fine of being part of the construction team.
