I have watched so many of your videos during my basement bathroom install, thank you so much. I did everything from framing a new wall, covering bulkheads, drywall, replacement of rough and finish plumbing, install fiberglass base, and tiling the floor and shower. I could not have done it without your help. Love the simplicity and your explanation gives confidence that we can do it ourselves and come out with a great finish. Thank you Jeff!
I've been doing lots of stuff around my house and your videos have really hit the spot. Thank you, so much.
Do you have a separate video on the rough plumbing for the shower pan? I’m converting a tub to a shower pan. The drain will be on the right side. I’ve learned so much from you. Your videos are awesome!
Jeff - I love the videos. Watching your videos has given me the confidence to accomplish so much, on top, save a few dollars. I was wondering if you could do a video with a custom sized shower and tile floor. Essentially building a mortar bed, pan liner and tile. Cheers!

You made this look so easy! I'm hoping it will go as smoothly when it comes time for my installations. Got a shower & a tub in separate bathrooms to install. I'm debating whether or not to replace my cast iron tub coated in porcelain bc the porcelain got scraped off on part of it (reckless deadbeat tenants). The idiots who installed the tub put the P-trap right through a joist-- they cut ALL the way through the joist for it so I'm going to have to make a support box under it & I will probably go with a direct drain (P-trap under the drain rather than the overflow). I'm probably going to cram some wood in between the cut in the joist to offer more support and sandwich it with other boards to add extra support along with the box bc I'm paranoid about structure failing.
Great videos, if you ever get to a house that needs the shower pan replaced with tiling, that would be awesome!
Quick and easy explanation, thank you.
Any thoughts on how to install the drain if you do not have bottom side access? Thanks?
how did u much the holes and prevent the leakage i got a old one on this with plastic wall need to install one that i can tile around it
I have watched many of your videos. Thanks, I have learned lots. I have relocated my shower p trap and drain 12' from its original location and installed a vent. I have an Oatey 2'" drain that I will use along with Oatey liner and mortar dry pack for my slope. How high above the slab do I glue the Oatey drain? Flush with the cement? What shall I backfill around the drain? Mortar dry pack or cement?
Hi. I am wondering if you could please tell me what the sand mix is you are using. Home Depot keeps telling me its concrete mix but I want to be sure because this is a fiberglass sower pan. Also, does my plumber need to set the drain before I make the bed of sand and level it? Thank you/
my pan says to use mortar under the pan, I have plywood, do I need to do anything to the plywood before adding mortar? thanks
Good explanation of the need for the paper gasket. Thanks!
Hi Jeff i didnt the rough plumbing to connect the that pan. how much piping do leave out of the floor to connect the pan drain?
Good video jeff. I just like to know how you fix the drain on this one. If you have 2" or 1 1/2" Pipe
Thanks! I've been contemplating my shower pan installation and wondering if it needed to be set on a bed of mortar...
I bought a Kohler ballast shower base an i can't find instructions for the best way to install a concrete acrylic shower base of this type. all tips would be appreciated
Do u still have to screw this to the 2x4 around it ?? thx
Jeff , is taking the drain before installing the pan then how do you get it screw tight ?
Hi jeff i have a question i am gonna install shower base at my home and i need to know as this acrylic shower and i got my other acrylic shower 38 by 38 installed at basement and its squeeking now when some body use it, so for new shower base 32 by 60 i need to know what should i put under subfloor to prevent squeezing
Jeff, the plumber's putty I found at the big blue store said 'not for use with plastic.' Is there pvc-safe plumber's putty or should I just use silicone like the oaty drain instructions recommend?
When installing on a second floor in between joists, are you supposed to support the drain? And how if so? There isnt room enough to have a p trap with a 2x4 under affixed to the joists for support.. i was thinking that when the drain is inserted then the support will be from the actual drain on the pan and that little bit of give in the pipes will act as a flex joint whereas rigid would be more prone to cracking with any movement.. i wouldnt think the pvc joints would leak from that movement over time as they are welded together.. right?
I was wondering what your sand mixture consists of? So I would use that to level my base?
I dont know if I understand this correctly, say that I wanted to take out my step in tub, can I use a base and tile around to protect the walls. Is the pan all I need?
Hi Jeff I'm a new subscriber. Love your videos. Question is I'm installing a fiberglass shower pan with tiled walls. But my walls are about 3/4" wider than my pan. Can I just first the walls out to meet the top of the pan for my cement board ? Thanks Jeff
You’re doing a hell of a job Jeff !!!
Would you install any water proof materials under the pan ?
Is it possible to replace a shower pan without tearing out your tile. Planning on tiling over my existing tile.
Question: We poured our pre slope and it's cracked in some places to the point that it's missing chunks. Can we patch with thinset before we lay our pan liner and do our final slope? Thanks in advance!
Jeff - great video and easy to follow. When I purchased the shower pan and drain assembly I also asked for the plumbers putty. The sales person said that he was aware of discoloration over time around the drain as a result of leaching from the putty. He suggested silicon instead of the putty. What do you think? Thanks.

Yeah I caught that too - my Delta shower pan explicitly prohibits the use of plumber's putty on the drain.
Ever use minimal expanding foam under a fiberglass shower base that’s already in?
Hi Jeff. I've been binging your channel as we are looking to renovate our master bath. We have a small corner walk-in closet (more like a step in) and a shower right next to it. We need more closet space. I would like to remove my shower completely from that area and relocate it to where our unused, large jacuzzi tub is, and expand the closet into the old shower area . Our home is on a concrete slab and the shower base is concrete. How would we remove the shower base and make it level with the rest of the floor? Plug the shower drain and properly cut off plumbing? Home was built in 1992.
Great video My friend had one installed and is unhappy that there is standing water in the shower after using the shower. Is this unusual ? Should installer have pitched it better? Or are they designed to be installed level and you get what you get? Thx
Why you didn’t put cement all over the floor board for levelling or cement sheet first?
Jeff, what mix did you use. I am in Ontario and struggling to find a mix.
Is there a option doing this over existing tileed shower?
hello sir is it possible to install a pony wall next to to shower pan?? we would prefer wall instead of glass door.. thank you for video
Can you do a video on different drain connections like chemical seal or gasket seal to connect base to plumbing
Thank you I really need this
Hi, how one can change just the pan after the walls have been made. The house I bought has ceramic tiles in the shower but the pan is in bad shape and want to replace it

Finally this guy knows what he’s doing putting a floor pan in. Sears did my shower and screwed it up twice we had bubbles in the pan finally the third time they used cement to balance the pan.

can I have the shower pan stick to the cement sheet and not the studs (i.e., tile will be installed above the integrated tile flange)?! I have made the drain eye and it will be hard to reposition the pan under the cement sheet.
Does the Sandmix actually hold the pan in place or just for level purpose? Thanks
Do u always have to place some cement under the shower pan ??
Jeff, what model of Dewalt screw gun do you use?

What kind of sand mix did you use?
So how even will the shower pan be if you have a pile of cement at each end. How strong will the base be in the middle.
since there's no Plumbing in the stall that I could see are you able to test the drain to make sure it doesn't leak I'm assuming maybe you hooked it up to the outlet pipe below and maybe put in a bucket of water and was able to reserve it for a period of time to make sure that the gasket and everything was sealed tight and on the sand mixture I saw another video where they put the sand mixture underneath the whole shower pan I'm assuming in your case because of the leveling issues you just added into those areas that needed to be level and that was enough to keep the pan from moving also
@HomeRenoVisionDIY

This particular shower pan is very rigid and has structure to the outside edges. all that was needed was to level and provide some strength on the interior of the pan. Really not necessary but most home owners don't like the feel of moving acrylic so it is best to fortify the install this way.
my shower tub is cheap fiber glass with walls I want to remove and install walk in shower measure bathroom wall to wall 58 inch but the shower pan I want to buy is 60 inch you think will fit because I cant find 58 inch walking shower pan please advise ?
Is it necessary to put down plastic or cement board on top of the wood subfloor before adding the sand / cement mix?
@ho_cho_e_vi_aisong_mai_tro1061

I think cement board on top of the wood subfloor is too thick. In all videos I watched, they all put mortar directly on the wood subfloor, this will be problem later when they want to remodel again, ie removing the old shower pan. The purpose of mortar under shower pan is to create support so it will not crack when stepping on it .
Hi Jeff, I watched a lot of your videos, that really helped me a lot. There are 4, 5 kinds of thinset mortar, which one is good for using under shower pan and not drying too fast? Thanks

hello can anyone know in apartment on 5th floor if i want to remove the old shower pan and to make one level with tiles what do i have to use underneath ? waterproof concrete and then the tiles? or is something else on top of the concrete before i add the tiles ? and what about around lets say do i have to secure something around the tiles ? can someone please answer me

In my experience the best waterproofing system for a custom shower is schluter systems. You need to check with your condo board to determine the acceptable course of action so that your insurance is valid in the event of a water problem down the road.
Why didn't you secure the pan to the framing? What is the sand mix made of?
You could have poured a super thin layer of floor leveler. Its like liquid cement that levels itself as liquid does then sets as cement does. Instant level floor over night.

Keep in mind that self leveling concrete is only to be used on a solid concrete floor. If you use it on a floor with joists then over time it will crack and or pop tiles.
I’d like an opinion on work I’ve had done and paid for. I am afraid to use shower because is eroding as it never hardened. I have several images not sure where there is water as I am guessing some had seeped thru cracked grout.

@@HomeRenoVisionDIY Thanks for the prompt reply. Just finished watching your hour of Q & A's very informative. Must say CR and gingerale is one of my favorites as well. My dilemma is I am transforming a basement bedroom into a laundry/bathroom. The exterior walls currently are finished. 2 x 3 studs, pink insulation & vapor barrier. From the looks of it the vapor barrier has been compromised in many places and shaudky installed. As I now will be running water to the washing machine and sink can I leave the existing drywall up using it as a barrier for my plumbing and installing a new 2 x 4 wall over it using additional styrofoam insulation without a vapor barrier or will that cause me problems in the future. I will take down all of the present drywall down to the studs if need be.
I'm replacing a shower pan similar to the one in this video, but I don't want to replace or modify the drain body, which is solvent welded to the drain pipe and both body and pipe are in good condition. Also, I don't have access to the under side of the pan after it's installed, unless I cut a hole in the ceiling below. In this situation, how can I connect the strainer to the drain body? Are my only options to either cut a hole in the ceiling below (to attach the compression ring to the underside of the strainer once the pan is in place) or to install a completely new slip-on drain? Your videos and advice are very helpful, thanks!
@HomeRenoVisionDIY
6 жыл бұрын
There is a drain in where the pipe extends through the floor and the pan is placed over. Once the pan is in stalled there is a gasket ring that compresses onto the pipe to create a seal. This is an option if you don't want to open the ceiling underneath.
for a typical shower pan install, should the pan be secured to the studs using screws/washers or clips? instructions for dreamline brand showerbase do not specify using clips or screws with washers - thanks

I really love your DIY videos. I am seeking some assistance on my new project. I plan to remodel my basement standing shower. I have small standing shower now which is over a tiled floor that is on basement concrete. I have dismantled my old standing shower and found that my drain hole is about 15"X15" away from the wall. I may have to reposition it to line-up with shower base I am buying. Do you have any video on how to install shower tub on a tiled floor and also on how to reposition drain pipe in the basement that has concrete around the drain pipe?

how do you make sure shower drain is lined up and connected properly?

Great videos. Love watching and learning. What do you do if you’re redoing tile and discover that the shower pan is not level?
@imafool69
4 жыл бұрын
if its not leveled and the pan is not stuck in concrete you could take it out, level the floor and reinstall it. but chance are if it it stuck in cement and you try to remove it it will break. so you decide if its an issue for you depending on how bad it is (meaning does it interfere with drainage)
If we already tiled before this step did we mess up? We left the drain opening open. If we did mess up what’s the fix? Thank you
@jlai3861
3 жыл бұрын
Not really, it's easy to remove tiles, draw a line and use grinder to cut tiles along and break the tiles where shower pan will be sit. If you tile floor are perfect level you don't even need to break tiles, just spread some thinset first that help cement adhere to tile then put the pan on cement. With minimum gap between pan and floor you can just caulk it. After installing the pan you need screw the pan flange to the wall stud ( he didn't show in the video) that basically fix the pan horizontally , and with wall tile and shower glass weight on , pan will be fixed vertically. Just be sure have some one help you when you put in shower pan , and have tools ready and handy. you have only one chance to put it in with glue on pipe and at same time to make sure pan is level. Try several times before gluing so you have idea when shower pan is level.
What about drain connection? Looks like you just set pan without aligning/connecting drain?
So the drain just plugs itself after you drop the pan down??
What are opinions about acrylic shower pans? They seem to be low maintenance and easier to install compared to tile but I want a pan that feels really solid. Can this be achieved with acrylic pans? If I get one and it doesn't feel solid, can I beef it up with a thicker bed of mortar/sand mix? Any brands that you recommend? What about Kohler?
@HomeRenoVisionDIY
7 жыл бұрын
Kohler is excellent. However most makes of acrylic will give you the performance you are looking for if you use the sand bed method. I would say that 90% of the shower pans that I see installed do not have a sand bed and this leads people to think they are not going to perform well.
I've seen a lot of builders level it with some shims and few hundred pounds of cement bags ontop then use closed cell foam under it at some of the pre-wire houses around here. they are pretty good about using enough for it to feel solid under and not push up or out. their building a few hundred houses a year so I'm sure that plumbers had enough experience to know how much to spray before he drops the pan back down.

What is "sand mix"? is it just wet sand? Is it mortar? How does the drain magically get connected if i am on a slab?
@MrDW-ei1fe
3 жыл бұрын
I'm an apprentice plumber that's set dozens and dozens of shower pans. Sand mix is just quikrete sand topping. You have to use the sand topping because theres very little to no aggregate (little pebbles) that the typical concrete has. This guy didn't really use enough water when mixing it. Not to mention the method he used to level it is long and confusing. The floor is never level so theres no point in trying to predetermine where to pour the concrete if you choose to use concrete. You want your concrete to be on the runny side but not completely fluid. Just a bit more water than what he used. A good guide is 1 gallon of water per 60 lb bag of concrete. If there's no rough in for a shower drain then you obviously can't magically put a shower there. At that point you should hire an experienced plumber with a good reputation.
@steveh7108

@@MrDW-ei1fe probably best to go to the flooring section and get a self leveling floor patch. Just like you said no aggregate but it's made for things like this and it's usually got a little latex in it as well. I think this KZreadr is giving people a lot of bad advice.
Awesome video... Thanks! I had a couple quick questions that I am hoping you can answer. What brand/model of shower pan did you use in this video? I am looking for a high quality, solid shower pan that doesn’t feel cheap underfoot, for one of our bathrooms. The one you installed looks pretty solid. We want to tile the walls with subway tile but like the idea of a seamless shower pan. Also why didn’t you put mortar under the other sections of the pan? I know a lot of manufacturers of these types of units require a mortar bed throughout to make the pan more solid. I am just curious if this was a manufacturer recommendation or comes from your professional experience. Thanks!
@michaeldepow6663

This pan has a plywood bottom which doesn't require a mortar bed like most acrylic pans do.
I'm trying to retrofit a house type shower to the black pipe of a mobile home. I have the "tail" from the pan that has to go into the black pipe but I can't figure out how to get it in because I can't see where the end of the tail is to be sure it goes in; it may just push the pipe aside. I don't want to have to tear out a wall or tear out the underneath. I've had the old shower out for two weeks and I'm really getting tired of it not being fixed. I'm at my wit's end.
I've been thinking about using self-leveling floor leveler with a layer of felt paper between the concrete and floor pan. Is this an acceptable way of supporting a shower pan?
