Cut pipes at 90 degree angles. Deburr the pipes. Press with a slight twist and hold for 30 seconds.

GREAT video !! I’ve been a service tech for a local company for almost two years. I am totally bored with service and I’m hoping to move to our repair side and unfortunately I never grew up learning how to work on stuff and do repair so I’m super green. Not only does this help my chances of slowly moving to our repair side by giving me knowledge of plumbing but as service tech sometimes looking at all the equipment and plumbing can get confusing but the more I’ve learned about the plumbing and equipment I walk back to the equipment now and fell confident it also helps a lot knowing what all that different pieces are called when writing work orders.

FYI: If you didn't cut the lines so low to the ground below diverter valve, you wouldn't have had that gap. Try cutting to the highest point first, then see what's necessary. Another benefit is leaving room to cut again in the future. As you noted, that situation didn't have a water level problem, but so many do. If you have water problem, or there is no room left, yes, you can dig into ground, and if its below water line you can pre-mount parts on hose, add bladder to hose, turn water on hose... and bladder will block water flow.... then Wah la... it works... no water all over the place... but it sucks. A lot more work Again, please, cut as high as possible...always... to maximize the amount of pipe left to splice. Just makes sense.

I watched this video to see the plumbing side of things. You really assembled it in just the right way. The last pipe you did you first put the pipe in the 90 so you could adjust it easily and didn’t need to mark the pipe as you just swung it into place. I was curious why you didn’t clean the paint off of the pipe coming off the pump as I thought you had to. Are you in the Southern California area and you can come here and put mine in? Really great job. Quick and professional.

Hello, as far as the existing paint on the pipe goes the primer we use eats away at the paint and 1st layer of PVC. Therefore, it does not require us to sand off the paint. For the second question, our office and warehouse reside in Phoenix AZ, but we also do not offer any installs at this time. Wish we could help!

Those pumps work pretty good in the dry air of Arizona, but over here in muggy Florida the programming screen fogs over because they are only sealed with a two sided sticky tape. After a couple years the units screen blanks out and buttons dont work. Only save is if you have a two thousand dollar easytouch control panel that communicates via cable to pump and continues to run pump via easytouch schedules, otherwise its a six hundred dollar part to replace drive unit. I suggest anyone who buys this to remove those three screws that hold the screen cover on, than use rtv silicone sealant around the black edges of screen seal. Do a good job, or open those wallets up later.

No it does not and the manual states this. I see pool companies screw this up for customers all of the time when they install these. It has thermal protection but not freeze protection. It does not have an air temp sensor. You either need an automation system or if you have a mechanical timer w/freeze sensor, just set the pump schedule to run 24 hr's and use the schedule on the mechanical timer w/freeze override.

Great video. Do you have anything on hooking up this pump to an automation system? I have a Hayward ProLogic panel and am trying to figure out how to attach the control wire so that the automation system will control the filter pump.

Just your normal spray can paint (Rust-Oleum). You will be looking specifically for the almond color for Pentair products. Hope this helps!

you could've just assemble/glue the two 90's first unto the crossed pvc. Dry fit the side close to the filter housing and measure to the vertical pipe coming up from the pump. Then just glue that complete assembly unto both vertical pipes.

Hi there, Jim. You want your cut to try and be as square as you can get it but it's not necessary for it to be perfect. Just need it to be as level as you can get it to be when making your connections. Hope this helps!

Here's a tip if you don't want to cut out the suction 3 way valve - butt up two 45s between the valve and the pump. When one end is on the valve pipe you can swivel it around to exactly match elevation with the new pump intake.

@@KhalilSalman Your manual is not accurate. In the old days rule was 4x pipe diameter straight run into the pump, same on the output. More times than I can count, I have seen hard 90's directly on intake, and hard 90's directly on return side of pump. I used to correct these errors and found that my efforts were totally inconsequential. A lot of stuff works that's not supposed to according to "the book". Two 45's on the intake side of the pump makes effectively zero difference on water flow or pump performance. I'll challenge anyone in the industry to tell me differently. A lot of things in "the book" weren't based upon any empirical data whatsoever when it was written. Turnover rates have long been discounted, and for this, pool pumps have been over powered (HP) and over run (hours a day) for decades. This again from loose guidelines, no science involved at all. We used to tell people to drain and fill pools when dissolved solids got much over 3,000 ppm. Now we want about that on salt content alone (salt pools). "By the book" I have seen so many pools in the past 26 years that should not have worked hydraulically. But there they were, right as rain. (Having said that, I have seen many where the hydraulics were atrociously terrible). But I do appreciate your attention to the detail, very much. Maybe someday, we'll get "the book" right. But as for now, nobody seems too interested in doing that. Best regards!

@@mayorb3366 Thank you for this. I've been scouring around on the web and opinions differ wildly on the "straight run" requirement. Some say not to have it on inlet and outlet, others say it only applies to inlet. And yet others say that it only applies to industrial pumps, and not to pool pumps since the pressure is lower. I'm about to install a pump where the outlet is a few inches from a 90, and this was comforting to read. I did put an 8" run on the inlet just in case.

When you cut the existing pipe, you can see that it is white plastic. The outside is grey. Was this pipe painted and if so why didn't you sand the paint off?

The guy i work for has been doing pools 15 years and he just puts bricks or tiles under the pump when replacing. He would NEVER do all that work you did lowering the suction side plumbing. He also doesn't put that special lube on the high Temp union threads, one did leak. Is he sloppy? I only know his work, so please educate me.

The term "Lazy" seems appropriate for that situation.

The top two couplers one the valve side didn't receive any primer or glue (inadvertently). From a customer service/ethics perspective how do you (and those watching this) manage this situation - knowing that this could become an issue in the future for the customer? Are you Transparent with customer? Would you Wait until customer calls that the joint failed and then fix free of charge? Would you consider it Job security? Not your problem? Other thoughts?

You need to test between each wire to ground also. If one of your legs was off but the other was hot testing between the two would not show it. TEST EACH WIRE TO GROUND.

Back when I was in the pool supply buisness I never sold Hayward pumps. Love their other products but the pumps were garbage. The drive burned up in the heat.

You can secure it but most people don't because of the materials used to create those pads. Often they will damage or break so most installers won't even bother. Hope this helps!

Hi there, sounds like you have a leak coming from the union assembly that connects the PVC to the pump. However, the o ring is not sold separately so you would need to buy a whole new union assembly. HOUSE BUILT IN 71 POOL WAS THERE,SAND SWITCH NEVER CHANGED OUT BUT A LOT OF PROBLEMS WITH IT. NEVER WITH HAYWARD PUMP TILL NOW.

Why didn’t you bolt/attach the pump to the concrete pad? Seems with pump vibration it won’t be long before there is a leak or a broken pipe.

Bolting a pump to a pad is not completely necessary. Only certain jurisdictions require you to do this by law. As for the vibration aspect, these pumps do not vibrate as much as you think. That is also a good reason to level the slab, and also level your pump on the slab so it sits on the flat surface. Try not to plumb your pump at an angle. Hope this helps!

Owning variable speed pumps for a very long time, there is no such thing as a vibration problem. Only places I know that require bolting down pumps are in hurricane zones and probably California, because they are idiots. In hurricane zones, they even make you bolt down a 300 lb heat pump. Always thought, well if wind is so bad it rips out pump and sends heat pump flying through the air, the house won't be there when all is said and done anyway, but it does make sense. Bolting down is for that type of risk, its not to protect from vibration. There isn't any worth noting. If its vibrating, its already failed.

Q? At 8:56 was that too big of a gap to just put 2 couplings right there? It seemed like maybe only an inch or two gap?

Thats a bunch of crap with Pentair not keeping the full 2 years if not professionally installed. They should be backing their product, not the install. Its not like you are putting the pump together. I installed a new pentair chlorinater and I had the same problem. Not professionally installed.

Setting RPM is dependent on the amount of water you want to filter. As a general rule, you should "turn-over" three times the volume of your pool every 24 hours. That means knowing the amount of water in your pool and how many gallons per min the pump handles at different RPM. Again the goal is filtering three times the volume of the pool at the lowest RPM (saves money) and required GPM for each 24 hour period. If the pump doesn't show GPM, buy a flow meter and add it right after the pump.

Why do you not put in a flow meter? It is impossible to know what speed to set the pump without one. With my Pentair pump, 1,750 rpms exceeds my filter recommendations. 3,000 rpms would be enough flow for multiple water falls, 5 or more jets, etc. At 3,000 rpms with a simple setup like that, you are likely destroying the filter by applying way too much pressure and water flow, let alone sending energy bill through the roof. Every pool has different line lengths, different number of bends, and simply different equipment with different specs. No "professional" should touch pump settings without a flow meter, yet they do. For example, I have a Pentair DE 80 cartridge filter. I also have Ultra Temp HC 140K BTU heat pump, IntelliPh, IntelliChlor, sacrificial anode, check valve, temp sensor, IntelliConnect, yep...and in-line flow meter just before filter. With all that adding back pressure compared to that simple setup, I was amazed to see that 1,050 rpms provides the recommended 50 gpm water flow. 1,900 rpms exceeds 85-90 gpm. Over 2,200 rpm guarantees I am destroying filter and forcing micro debris back into pool because 100 gpm is maximum flow for filter. I use a FlowVis flow meter and you should be able to get one for ~$120. That home owner would recover their investment rather quickly. If you are in California which = energy hell, and robbed blind, you likely get the money back in 2 months. Even without energy consideration, which is HUGE, you WILL significantly increase life of equipment, and equipment will work at peak efficiency. Over powering a filter makes it decline in performance and useful life. FYI: IntelliClor, heat pump, etc, all work well before 50 gpm for filter. Filter is key to measure. I run my pool for 16 hours at 1,050 rpms, and three at 1,800 rpms to maximize surface cleaning and to pull debris through drain and skimmer. Then let equipment have some chance to cool down for five hours. Works great. I guarantee, every pool is different and IMHO a flow meter should be required for anyone to set pump speeds. No possible way to get it right without one.

Why do the service people cut the pipes so low, they’re not thinking about the next person. Also service people continuously will tell you you don’t need that drain line that you hook up to the hose to lower your pool water, The pool builders always put in for a reason! and service tech people think you don’t need it. If you don't honor the 2 year warrantee because it's not professional installed, then why do a video for DIYer's? I worked in the electrical industry for 53 years starting as an apprentice, then journeyman and and then master, with licenses in 8 different locals. I also taught electrical controls at the State university of NY for 20 years. I will not buy your products and will not recommend them. Your product will either hold up or not and by issuing a qualification for an install you are loosing business.

Hi there Sandi, We would suggest getting a hold of Pentair directly for any concerns or comments you may have that reflect upon the integrity of their products and their warranty information. We are a small family-owned company and we made this video to show customers that you do not always need a professional for installation.

Hes not selling you a product. Hes clearly doing you, a contractor, a favor. And Ive never seen one of these models fail inside the warranty, even on a commercial property. Not saying its not possible. But if you're confident you can install properly, this video will save people a lot (who dont have pensions) of money these days. Also, "Qualified installers" (LIKE YOU) can include several disciplines including "Swimming Pool, Home Repair or Landscape Professional; Plumber or Electrician; General Contractor; Heating and Air Conditioning Specialist." per Pentair website. Love listening to these guys (from other professions) who dont know jack coming into the wholesale supplier and giving guys there shit because they know nothing and expect them to explain how to do these jobs. You should thank this guy. SMH

@@inaktiveshooter not doing me any favors, bud. I have a retail store, construction division, maintenance division, repair division, and 20 years in the business. Oh yeah, and I’m a Pentair Authorized Warranty Center, which uniquely qualifies me to speak in regards to Pentair warranties or lack thereof.

@@clittle580 So again, sounds like your beef with pentair, why bag on this guy? I sure as shit dont work for pentair but these pumps in my experience far exceed the "lack there of" and the pro warranty... Imagine a non-union industry, and suppliers determining who is qualified to install their expensive products. But no you all of a sudden want to sell their products to people who have no Idea what they are doing, and it be pentairs problem? OK

I install a pump that was working good apparently. But after a few days we realice that the pump keep running even if the valves are off. Do you know what that happens? It supposed to turn the pump off automatically in case of there are problems with the circulation right?
