Awesome! I'm doing 4 of these in my 90 year old house this weekend. Thanks for this.
Out of all the diy videos here on KZread I always find myself coming to your videos. I trust your work and advice you are very well trained and you don't cut corners you get the job done right. Thank you for your videos I hope to one day be as good as you.
Ever since I discovered that you were a NO-BULL kind of guy, I have been studying your videos endlessly. It's refreshing to get advice from someone who knows how to work on a budget, too. Your advice is a lot like my Dad's, only more educational and less "Hold that light still." From terms to techniques--tips and tricks, I've learned an incredible amount from you, Jeff! We are closing on a 60's house soon and I'll be able to put more of that into action. And I'm not proud of it, but I did listen to your explanation of different types of caulking during my commute the other day. The more you know... Thanks guy!
Thanks for helping the average homeowners! I’m learning so much from watching your videos! Very inspiring!
There's no pretending when your working for real. Ya'll hear how he breathing. I so admire this guy and his depth of knowledge!
Love the 'Get to it !' motto !
Thank you so much for this! We took out a nasty moldy door, framed it in and added a window to the new wall..this was fantastic help for us!

I took my house window install a couple steps further to improve the air and water seal. Flash the inside of the window frame with a rubber flashing and then use silicone around the entire frame before installing the window. The silicone and rubber flashing will act as a gasket to get a perfect air seal around the window in a way spray foam never will. Feel free to fill major gaps around the inside of the window with spray foam afterwards to improve the insulation value, but I don't recommend it for water sealing micro gaps likes what is found in between a new window and the frame. Really appreciate your videos, I've installed 1000 sq ft of flooring, completely rebuilt the kitchens floor joists, dinning and kitchen sub floor, siding, roofing, doors, windows, two bathrooms, drywall, thanks to your videos encouraging others to give it a shot before hiring the work out. The home was reappraised and is literally double what we bought it for. saved a small fortune

Ref home being worth double after your good works - to. It might have been appraised at twice the value, but, only if someone agrees to that price point, doesn't make a counter offer and their bank will give them a mortgage. In UK we gave seen a record rise in house prices (not far off £235k) because our Chancellor reduced the Stamp Duty. This is economic madness because nobody knows if the furlough schemes will still continue now we have seen an "almost" second wave of c-19. Basically job losses will bring a sharp drop in house prices. Would therefore take whatever value your estate agent (realtors?) suggest with a huge pinch of salt. Would further suggest you enjoy whatever improvements you made for their own sake. If you "rebuilt" your home to suit you then whoever buys your property might do exactly the same. In UK property is no longer the sure bet to generate wealth it once was. Sincerely hope the same doesn't apply to you folks too.

Glad to hear that someone else does it the same way I did mine. I did the same style windows as you did love them easy to install.
Love the spray foam and love the sound of it coming out of the gun,!
I am doing this exact job and had so many questions from your previous window videos but this answers everything! Thank you so much for posting this! Your videos help in so many ways.
literally just bought a house and plan on replacing windows, was a little worried about cost but this help a lot. Thanks!

Thanks for all the tips Jeff..
This is a really well done video. Thank you so much. You didn't leave out any steps. Bravo
I built a new garage recently and the windows I installed were much like the one you installed here with one awesome difference: mine had integrated J-channel for the siding to tuck into. Made it super fast and easy to not only install the window but to do the siding, too.

The windows I am ordering also have the J-Channel built into them. Seems like a no brainer to me.
The other day, I was in the kitchen making a cocktail. I poured in the liquor and mixers, added ice, no measuring. Just eyeballing it. Shook it, pulled a glass out of the cupboard, filled it with ice, and started pouring. The liquid came up to the very top of the glass without spilling and without missing a beat, I said: "Perfect every time. OH GODDAMNIT I'M TURNING INTO JEFF!"

Hey Jeff. Love your the content you put up on your channel as it takes the fear out of renovating by informing us what to look for as far as potential problems and how to simply navigate the build process. I have a quick question about this window install. Could one use the existing j-channel included in the brickmold to slot your siding into rather than butting up a second vinyl j-channel to the outside edge of the existing brickmold?
Thanks Jeff. We love you!

Did my whole house by myself 10 windows. They were all on the shelf at the Depot except one custom order. All new trim inside and out. Got a quote for $8500 to just replace windows, no trimming. All in it cost me just under $2500

Love the videos!! The carpenter pencils from Home Depot or other stores work great for 1/4 inch shims
Awesome content as always! You're amazing!
The window manufacturers make windows with built in J trim for vinyl siding. I turn to Jeff for his knowledge and expertise. In most cases, especially in having to deal with building inspectors, his understanding of building codes will keep you out of trouble. In my opinion, installing the waterproofing membrane and calking is an extra, inexpensive step to protect the biggest investment you'll ever make, your house. Even if it is no longer necessary. This is a how to install a window a different way and Jeff has other videos using the waterproofing membrane with a window or door install.
Thank you for the info! Wish I saw this last week before I butchered my new installation lol

I staple the tyvek to the frame first then put the window in when doing vinyl siding, seems to keep the water out 100% guaranteed that way
This is why I pony'd up and joined your channel. Talk about relevant content... I'm rebuilding this old shed out by the frogpond... and I don't really know what I'm doing. I just figure it out as I go. I picked up a partial order of windows from Depot yesterday - 19 of them. And I'll be ordering 12 more. So this video is timely to say the least. Thanks man!

Good advice and instructions
I have a question do you have any videos on installing hard wood over concrete sub floor?? Also love your vids! Please never stop I keep learning some great home improvement skills!
I don't know if the type of foam maters, but we found that spray foam will expand to fill the space, but then it will shrink over time, pulling the frame of the window apart. If this is an active window, that will destroy your water and air infiltration raiting. You should also use solid shims on the sides. Or your window will sag when your house moves and make the window hard or impossible to operate. This also can let water and air in.
Ur video🎥are very instructional(love them👌👌).Keep up th3 GOOD👍👍WORK.#GOODWORK
Hey Jeff another great video, think your going to make a video on wood like the screw video you did.
Another great video. Thanks so much for taking the time to put these out there. I do have a question though. I have noticed that you typically put in Gentek or similar windows. For a DIY'er are big box store windows that bad when compared to a window company like Gentek (or Van Isle windows on the west coast)?? Curious as I can never see a straight answer on that... thx so much again for all the videos!!
Very neat Jeff

Thanks for watching! glad it was helpful!
Great video Jeff! I was just waiting to see if you put the drip cap above the window! Lol! Please don’t take this in the wrong way,,The only thing that I would have done differently, would be to order the window 1” smaller to have a better bead of foam to seal it up on the interior and I would have ordered the jambs already installed on the window. The foam does a better bead when its min. 3/8”. Everything you did with the tyvek and blue tuck tape is the way to do it! I would also still shim the key points on the interior of the sides also, to support the frame and fasten through the shims. We use 3/8” premium screw caps that don’t look so bad and are great. I would also recommend that you pre caulk the top exterior corners on the drip prior to installing the j on the sides right in the top corners. (Hard to explain easier to show. basically caulking the brickmold to your top drip from under where you did the perfect 1 inch overhang!) The comments I have made are only because I have been Window Wise certified since 2001. FOR EVERYONE THAT WATCHED THIS VIDEO, JEFF DID AN AMAZING JOB! 🤩perfect video for DIYERS and guys who are starting off installing windows! Jeff knows his stuff! Thanks for sharing Jeff! Btw, its nice to see your boys helping you out! Stay safe and healthy Jeff and everyone out there! 👍🏻 (you can look into the screw cap covers, from SIL plastics. they have a factory in Vaughan, Ontario. I’m sure you will like them just watch out if you want blue white or a bone white color to match the color of the interior of your window. the ones we use are part #89 hole plug part) Hope this helps!🤓
And as soon as he told them they could leave "" they took off""hahaha

I just bought 4, new construction sliding windows from Home Depot. Was going to go with replacement but I still have to remove my siding where the windows are going in so that’s the route I decided. Ic ll just number each siding take a picture so I know where they go back

How do you install new construction basement windows? How do you install exterior moulding to the basement windows? We will be doing this eventually so still super helpful.. love all your shows actually 😁
Hi Jeff, thanks for your video. do I need pressure treated 2x4 or just the regular one?
here in alberta, we have to caulk the opening before putting the window in. also, we gave to create 1inch end dams on out drip edge/ then your j sits 1 inch higher on the drip edge. 'berta
Thank you I can't find the video for the inside finishing with the carpentry tricks
I would have put silicone before nailing the top flange, sometimes the tape fails, and you will have penetrating nail wholes leaking water in Sorry seen it all
Thank you

I changed out a window last year... blueskin sealed all up yadayada. Now, I want to change a bunch of other windows and the siding. Looking at this new install video; is my last year window a big problem now? Great stuff Tx
Can you make a video showing a fire hose hitting the house for a few days? Lol
Sweet
Hey Jeff, is that an alluminium Window? Does it have a thermal break? Good work. Cheers from Portugal
You are awesome @@👍👍👍👍
Dude has one viral sloppy drywall video and magically turns into a master tradesman overnight
Do you have any pointers on what to do when you don't want to remove the siding, like on an old house?
I had to shift my rough openings a bit to get them off the partial brick face so I don't have to cut the nailing fin off the new construction windows I bought. The rough openings were termite damaged anyway and wouldn't hold fasteners. Two windows are the original windows when the house was built, the other replaced by a previous owner and in good shape. However it was installed improperly and the rough opening insect damaged so I'm reinstalling. Looks like the nailing fin was cut off except at the top so I have to treat as a replacement window. Wasn't planning on taking it out but looks like I don't have a choice.
Jeff!!! I'm about to do this in my recording studio!!! Thanks... Can you show us how to take the siding off... and out it back on??

Quick question: Any advice on replacing aluminium windows on an old brick house? Windows nailing flang is nailed to the frame and bricked over; very difficult to remove.
Any recommendations for window outlets near Toronto or surrounding areas?
At the 3:30 mark you can see the top left corner of the flange is busted off. This is why manufacturers don’t recommend relying on using the flange as part of the building envelope sealing protocol. It seems when you are putting a thousand dollar window into a million dollar home with very little overhang using Blueskin membrane tape and not Tuktape might be a good idea.
@8419james
3 жыл бұрын
It's not broken, the corner is made that way. If you look closely when he is starting to nail the flange the other corners are the same way. All of the windows I installed in my house were like this also.
Hi Jeff. I’ve got replacement windows to go into a block opening that previously had aluminum 1960’s windows. I think they were screwed into the edge of a 1x4 wood frame built into the lock opening. The new vinyl windows are thicker and can’t be installed the same way. Ideas?
Excellent video. That blue tape and Tyvek wrap do a great seal. I like the multiple levels of “Overkill” . Re: Vinyl siding; Have you done a similar video using wood clapboard?
