How to Install a Governor Shaft Seal on a Honda GCV160 Engine
Тәжірибелік нұсқаулар және стиль
Step by Step!
Do you have a Honda GCV160 engine on your lawn mower? Is there oil on the left side of your mower deck? Don't know where it's coming from?
The engine could be leaking oil from the governor shaft!
For whatever reason, Honda decided not to install governor shaft seals at the factory on these older GCV160 engines. However, they do install them on all new GXV160 engines.
You can use that same exact governor shaft seal they use on the newer GXV engines, to fix that annoying oil leak on your GCV engine!
Today I'll be showing you step by step how to remove the governor arm, install the seal, reinstall the governor arm, and how to properly set the governor on a Honda GCV160 engine!
Parts used: Honda 91231-891-003 oil seal (6x11x4 seal, not bearing).

The part number of the seal installed in the video is 91231 Z1V 003. Here, you say it was part number 91231 891 003. Which is correct? Are they interchangeable?

@@llano52 Yes! Honda is known for having different part numbers for the same parts because they're used on different equipment. If you click the Amazon link, many of the reviews mention people using them on GCV160 engines
I just did the same thing on two of my GCV160 engines. After watching your video and cleaning the engines, it took all of about 10 minutes on each one. (The engines were still on the mowers.) It took longer to clean up the engines than to put the oil seal on. Good straight to the point video.
I just want to express my appreciation for this video I could not find this leak. I am ordering the seal today simple fix thank you again!
Thank you for this video. I have a Troy-Bilt lawnmower with the GCV160 engine and it was seeping oil in that exact spot. I removed the governor arm and left the retaining clip in place, bathed the area in carburetor cleaner and wiped it down. When the part came in I put it in place following your procedure and reassembled things. It was a quick, easy job. The only variance was that rather than use silicon lubricant I put a drop of motor oil on the governor shaft to lubricate it and make the installation easier. I imagine one could use anything, including bacon grease.
My only criticism is clamping the vice grips on the shaft. I would have put some electrical tape or duct tape on the teeth of the vice grips . This would prevent any damage to the shaft such as a raised bit of metal that would damage the seal upon sliding it over the damaged part. Sliding the seal along and over the shaft is when the seal “edge” can be slightly compromised with a small bit of damage and thus a shorter seal life. My method would also include a quick burnishing of the shaft with crocus cloth and an gentle camfer of the leading edge of the shaft . That would be a bit over overkill in a busy shop, but if you are doing this for yourself , you can gain some additional life on the seal instalation. Other that that, its a great video that’s extremely helpful!
I really appreciate how concise your tutorials are. Well done and thank you.

Good video Jake. I have done a couple of these. I found the seals not listed on the lawnmower parts list, but were available from a marine parts list from an outboard motor. Always good to have the part number. Have a good week. Rick

Nice twofer, Jake! Not only a heads up and fix on the Honda GCV160, but by far the clearest explanation of governor reset I’ve ever seen (and I’ve watched a bunch!). Now I’ll be paying close attention to every Honda engine that comes in to see if they have that telltale sign of oil in the vicinity of the governor shaft - such an easy fix! Are you and Stella coordinating your uploads on the same engines? 😂

Great information. Have a GCV200 with same issue. Any idea if this seal will work on a GCV200 engine? Understand the shaft diameters are slightly different; however, may try anyway.

I have the same Honda pressure washer. Brand new. Only used once . It started leaking oil from the top of the motor from under the flywheel ?
My rule of thumb for that static adjustment is lever turned to full throttle open and turn shaft in sae direction re clock.

I need one about this size for my briggs and stratton, I cant seem to find one that small, I wonder if the Honda one would fit
Hi. I have some oil leaking in that area. Could it be from there? The Toro dealer I bought it from said it was not fixable because a design flaw- can’t put an O ring there….?
Just make sure to hold on to shaft while installing seal or you’ll be taking it all apart 😅 Follow his directions closely and take your time

my Tecumseh 10 hp. governor shaft is leaking oil at the top where the governor arm hooks onto it. Can you tell me if there is a seal there ?
Hola saludos costa Rica video en español
How should I remove the Governor Shaft that got pushed inside the engine? Thank you.
On one of my HRX217's (GCV190) with the blade clutch, I set the no load rpm's to about the Honda recommended 3200. But when I engage the blade, the rpms drop to a weak 2700-2800. Thus I have to over-rev the no-load rpms to around 3600-3700 in order to have them drop to the desired 3200 when the blade is engaged. I have adjusted the governor arm per this video & the over-rev/under-rev problem still exists. I watch & subscribe to you because you are one of the best. Any ideas? Final note, the gov spring puts some spring back to the gov arm (when pushed forward) but it doesn't snap back like on other 190's (or 160's) I have in my possession ... just this one model.

Th seal did seem to restrict the movement of the shaft so I took the seal out but it didn't correct things. It's a mystery; I have other GCV160's & 190's where this rpm divergence isn't a problem.@@rf5101

Do these not come on the unit? Or do they somehow break off? I was given a gcv 160 because of a bad oil leak and placed this seal in. Have ran it yet to see if it fixed the problem. But the motor didn’t have the seal when I was given and that’s where I found the oil was coming from

@@Whats_noah_up_to no as far as I know it's like an interference fit, they usually don't leak but if they do the seal is the cheap quick fix. All the new ones have the seal to ensure none of them leak.

Yes there will be an oil seal, just look up the model number parts diagram of your engine online to get the part number of the oil seal. The installation will basically be the same but you may need a sharp pick to pull out the old damaged seal.

Does your table have a hole for shaft to go thru so it sits flat?
@waynestefinashen239
Жыл бұрын
Yes it does we actually have a few that are patio plastic end tables with holes cut off and a few steel tables with a hole in the centre. We also have a test engine steel table that we can run engines on with blade installed to set up to specification prior to installation on mowers.
@mgomez5606

Does table shake much?
@waynestefinashen239
Жыл бұрын
@@mgomez5606 Absolutely no shaking since the table is extremely heavy top plate is 1/2 inch steel with holes drilled to mount different engines. Guess there would be some vibration if we left and unbalanced blade on it or if the crankshaft was bent but we check this things first prior to mounting and running.
Mily oldie is a smoke machine. It runs hard though. Im trying different liquids. I put some glycerin in there. Smoke died down. Im still cyphering what is going on.😅

Dealing with the same here. I've started with the easy stuff - check crankcase vent tube for blockages. Then check carb for blockages and make sure the gaskets are un the right order and orientation. This made a big improvement on mine but it's still burning oil. Next on my list will be the exhaust valve seal replacement. Finally, teardown and check cylinder walls for scoring and ring endgap... Think I'm into new rings on mine. Planning to make a leakdown tester to see what's what

Hard to say, if it's smoking from the crankcase vent tube it could be a head gasket. I have a video on that topic coming up within the next few weeks!

Our customer wore ear buds and listened to music an never heard the grinding noise of the bad bearings and almost ate through the axle. Luckily we could weld repair it then replace the bearings.
