How To Install a Front Gusset Kit on a Can-Am X3 Assault Industries Front Structural Reinforcement

Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары

The Can-Am Maverick X3 is a lightweight, low center of gravity, high powered rocket. There were a few compromises in the design to get the weight low. The stock suspension mounting points are made of surprisingly thin metal. In fact, when you tear this machine down to do the installation, you will be surprised at how thin. Many companies have a complete front gusset kit or structural reinforcement kit on the market. We chose to use the Assualt Industries kit because of the design and rigidity it adds. In addition to reducing flex and adding strength, it also makes all the suspension connections double shear mounting points for the upper and lower A-arms.
In the above video, we install the Assault Industries F-22 Front Structural Reinforcement kit (FSR Kit) from beginning to end showing you exactly what you need to do each step of the way. The kit probably will take 2 hours to install after watching the video so you know what you are doing. It will be clear that you are adding structural rigidity in the front-end of the of the Can Am Maverick X3. This will help to reduce flex while sharpening the vehicles handling characteristics. Because we are reducing issues related to flex, the vehicle can become much tighter and more predictable under load.
There are no specialty tools needed for this installation and most everything can be done with simple hand tools. To make things a bit faster, we used a Milwaukee M12 powered ratchet, a Milwaukee M18 Mid-Torque impact wrench and a Drill Driver. In a few of the cases, you will not be able to use impact sockets because of the size of the holes some of the bolts are in. You will see us using non-impact rated sockets on an impact wrench in those situations. Please use caution doing that.
This is a great time to add a front bumper, winch, tie rods, lower control arms or even just do some wiring. Most of the body will be off the front and it gives you full access to do whatever is needed.
Please leave any comments or questions below and we will do our best to answer them in a timely manner. Hope you enjoy the instructional video!

Great video guys thanks. This winter I'm going to spend some time in the garage tearing into my Xrs to do some powder coating to match my roll cage. I think that will be an opportune time to look into this as well since I'll have the shocks pulled out.

Wow, I was considering picking up an X3 XRS the local dealer want to blow out but think I’ll stick to my good ole turbo S. I had no idea the x3s were so poorly engineered and made. That paper thin sheet metal and single shear is down right scary. Thank you for posting this.

really good vid. I did a shock tower brace and gusset kit last year on my 18 and this is the first vid I have seen of most of the steps...nice job! Also, man, it looks soooooo much easier with a lift vs jack stands and blocks on your back

Thanks! We worked to try to take the guesswork out of it for a novice doing it in his garage. The lift is needed to get the camera in the right places... Yeah... right. We are too old to do this on jack stands.

Great vid as always. I was just curious if you guys, or anyone out here in youtube land, has had issues with the stock mounting. I see these kits all over the place online, but I do not personally know of anyone or have heard of anyone, who has any issues here. I find it hard to believe that the engineers at can-am would have designed these important areas for failure, but not saying it's impossible. After installing any of these gusset kits, where would the "weak link" link be? Im not sure what would actually break without these kits, but I do know from "expensive experience" that when you start beefing up stuff, you make the cheapest part to repair, your "weakest link". Thanks guys. Appreciate it.

Yes, we have seen the paper thin stock braces wrinkle up and bolts bend. We have seen the front bulkhead bend and even seen the lower frame tweak on these due to the single shear. Your full suspension is riding on a bolt only supported on one side for the rear upper and rear lower A arms. The weak link is the lower A arm, we discuss this at the end of the video.

He has only rode with us once as he is a busy guy. He ended the day with a check engine light that ended up being a bad O2 sensor. His main issue is trying to keep up. His machine is more bus than sports car in the trails. He can do well on slow rocky trails, but wehn we get in the open and wind it up, his machine cannot turn or respond as fast as the Can-Am X3 or RZR XP...

I’m about to do this install and found your video. First of all, thank you. Second, the winch bumper I bought is clearly going to need some modifying. If you look in your video at 13:08 it appears you didn’t drill the bulkhead to allow the winch mounting bolts to go through and it’s making it so you cannot remove the winch without removing the front bumper in addition it looks like it’s bending the bumper plate? Any issues or advice?

  • @WrenchesRides

Our winch bumper was highly modified and weakened by the mods to fit a Warn Axon 35. We would have to remove the bumper to remove the winch so we did not drill it.

All we had to do was trim the bottom of the bumper tubes slightly and weld in new metal to make it fit. Took us about 20 minutes, mostly to bend in the new pieces we cut out.

@@WrenchesRides You started with Assault Industries F-22 bumper correct? Did you have to drill new holes for the wider winch mounting pattern?(it appears to have (2) sets of holes for mounting the winch) Did you add the (2) small bars on either side on the top bar (support / light mounts) or are those included? Do you have a photo of where you trimmed the bottom bumper tubes? Sorry to be a pain just really like the bumper and the idea of a larger winch for my 4-seater.

We did not need to drill new holes for the winch, but we did for the fairlead. We did add those side bars and light mounts. There is a flag mount for the dunes added also. I do, but don't know how to post it in the comments. Maybe we should do a video on all the little things we customized?

I bought this kit. I've watched this video multiple times. Let's just say, not all of us have your tools and lifts. I'm a millwight and have a ton of tools, not that lift though.. Very generic video, (per se). Correct me if I'm wrong, this is the KZread video that explains it all with the kit I bought?!?!? Granted, it's aftermarket. Buyer beware but.... More detail. Video was edited way to much. I'm having second thoughts.

Good (and bad) video. :) Good because it convinced me to buy the kit. Bad because now I am installing and it isn't as easy as you made it look. Bought the kit for a 2019 maverick x3 xds. Why are there only 6 main bolts (4 for the front, 2 for upper rear, and then what for the lower rear? - Stock ones won't be long enough now apparently?) For this kit and price you'd think that you would get everything.
