How to Install a Cast Iron Drain | Torch Down Roofing Guide

On a flat roof, it’s very important to have proper drainage for water to not get trapped. Otherwise it can cause leaks and other major roofing issues. In this video, I’ll show you how to install a cast iron drain on a flat torch down roof.
**Please note that torch down roofing is dangerous and should be installed by a licensed professional. Using an open flame can pose a fire risk and therefore must be handled carefully. Make sure to wear fire resistant gloves when installing torch down roofing.
Keep all flammable scrap and debris at least 10 feet away from the building. A fire extinguisher is needed within 50 feet of anywhere where more than 5 gallons of flammable or combustible liquids or 5 pounds of flammable gas are being used on the job site. No one on a job site can be more than 100 feet away from a fire extinguisher at all times. There must be at least one fire extinguisher for 3,000 square feet of work area.

the proper way in installing a cast iron drain is using a lead and gum forming it into the cast iron drain then priming that lead and torching your base and cap. not no self adhred membrane. using quick prime isnt a glue so in that aspect that drain will fail and leak in no time.

i really hate these drains, if you look at the final result, the lip of the drain is raised SO MUCH off the floor, even with the slits cut into the side of it, there is essentially ALWAYS standing water around them

Ya I agree, not sure why they design it that way. I prefer going retrofit drains, something like a thunderbird.

Wouldn't it be better to inset the drain into the plywood?

Ideally yes. Most of the time its not the roofer installing the drains, its a plumber. So we usually have to deal with what they give us.

That is a great question. Honestly I’ve seen specs on it, I have never tried it but I think it will make for a better system. I need to look into that
