How To Install a Brick Lintel for an Egress Window

How To : Install a Brick Lintel for an Egress Window. Installation of a brick lintel can be tedious. Brick Layers might not show up when you need them and you might only have a small job to do anyway.
My brick layer bailed so I had to install the brick lintel myself.

    Thank you. You said "inspector." Yay! So this answers a couple questions for me with regard to the 6' wide opening I am about to do on a permitted remodel where I'm doing a new in an existing wall.

    Yes please do your due diligence for inspections as required. Because if you don't they can make you rip out the work you already have done. It hasn't happened to me but it's certainly not unheard of

    I love the attitude, and the appropriate amount of swearing. Cheaper and you learn more doing it yourself. Did you cut away the flashing before you mortared over it, or do you mortar around it and grind it away afterwards?

    Hi Scott, There are little plastic "honeycomb" weeper biscuits that you can buy at any brick supplier. You would want to weep at least every 2nd brick along the top of the window lintel. if you check out my latest video called "sound-proofing you basement ceiling" , there is a moment at the 24 seconds mark of the video where you can see me bricking in a different lintel and you can see two of the weepers in that shot. Check it out.

    Zach Provchy well if you intend to remove the lintel you should install the new one right away. Otherwise put in a temporary support.

    Hi, can you install lintel from outside I mean the other way around. So basically you just open a line there and insert the lintel. I have seen some people have done that and have approved from the city.

  • @HouseHustlers

    @HouseHustlers

    Well I have seen it done as you mentioned, but if I was an inspector, I would fail it. Here's why: When installing a lintel, code requires a flashing or membrane of some sort to direct water OUT of the wall cavity. The flashing requires that the lintel is installed the correct way. If you reverse the lintel, it will not allow for flashing, and will actually direct water INSIDE the wall cavity. Its not a good idea, although it will work from a structural standpoint, just not good for water proofing.

    Great question. Our home has an old addition done in the 1920’s and our bathroom door is unfortunately in our kitchen. I’m trying to install a Lintel and door in a brick interior wall so flashing isn’t needed. I’m happy I stumbled upon your video and could possibly to it in reverse saving myself from having to remove and add bricks. Thanks for the video!

    It actually looks much better after pressure washing it. The old brick had dust on it from the grinder, and when it was clean and everything was dry, the colour matched almost the same.

  • @HouseHustlers

    Its painted red. But yes this type still does rust slightly when bare metal is exposed. Not that it matters. These lintels are required by code. They're in every brick house you've ever seen.

    @@HouseHustlers It's the head of a window, all window heads have a flashing with a drip edge hem bent into it so water doesn't crawl backwards, if there is no drip edge minimum 1/4" away water not only creeps backwards but it also splashes backwards on the materials behind it and than creeps as it will again, you could also have put down a drainage mesh below the first course of brick at the window head. Looks decenet and I'm sure it will hold up but the flashing details could be better and at the head of a window, flashing details are quite important, flashing details in general are important. Drain the bottom and allow water to escape and create proper flashing methods to let water drip off an edge and not crawl back.

    I don't suppose anyone makes a lintel that's easier to install from the outside. I have a 5x2 crawlspace door that the home's original owner cut in the concrete block foundation, right up to the brick, using a wood 2x8 for a lintel. :(

    Matthew I know it looks like they dont match but they are nearly identical after pressure washing the dirt off. There was no closer match i could find anyway. The original bricks were from the 1950's. Anyhow, yeah my grinder blade wasn't quite large enough to cut through the full depth. A full size concrete saw works best.

    Hammer drill those tight areas with a 3/8's bit but long enough to get to the back. Never failed me. And sometimes you can't help it because brick will crack from the lintel rusting creating pressure.
