    Your video is the only video on KZread that addresses the dryers common wire being attached to the ground stud on the washer for proper grounding of the body of the dryer. Great video. Other videos would have the the dryer body ungrounded.

    Your description of how to wire this exact setup for a 3-wire vs. a 4-wire, especially relating to what needs to happen with the white pigtail, was fantastic. I am helping a friend out with a 3-wire setup tomorrow that they were not sure about. And now, adding this knowledge to my skillet, I feel comfortable handling whatever setup they have.

    You have the only video I found that (at around the 2:20 mark) specifies that the flat side is the back side when deciding which is the left power and right power. Sure you can assume by how it's flat, it's supposed to be there and make the best contact and the other videos show it like that... but it makes me sleep soundly at night hearing someone say, "yes, hold it like this to know which is the right and which is the left". Thank you for your awesome specificity.

I connected it to the green one, the middle wire to the middle neutral, and the left and right hots are hooked up fine. I have power, but no heat. Its brand new from menards. It looks like we bought the same Maytag dryer. The instructions that came with it state that with a 3 wire connection, you are suppose to connect the neutral ground wire with the neutral wire and then connect a separate copper ground wire from the green external ground conductor screw to an adequate ground. I have no idea where I’m suppose to get that wire or what I should ground it to. What happens if I don’t and just leave it as is like you did?

    Question for you. My dryer wires are very long and when I hook them up the wires hit the back of the dryer drum. I suppose I could cut down the wire and and recrimp etc but I would rather not. Is this a danger if it is hitting the back of the drum? For reference, in order to have the wire strain on the thick outside coating (4 prong which is different cord), I have to push the wires into the dryer hole a lot and this is when the wires hit the dryer drum. Thank you for your help.

  • @breakerbroke23

    @breakerbroke23

    Yea, I'm not liking the wires hitting the drum. I also wouldn't cut and re-crimp. IMHO Go and buy the right cord and reinstall. Its a safety thing. Oh and your insurance company may not pay up if you have a fire due to the dryer connection.

    What happens if someone puts the ground wire on with the neutral? I just got a new dryer and its a 3 wire, but they set it up that way, so they took the ground off and put it on with the neutral. Is that safe? The instructions said not to but they ignored me when i mentioned that.

    That is common practice in older homes. If your home is newer then you will want to separate the Neutral and ground. Much safer. Review the schematic at the end of video. Cheers

    See now I'm super confused. I was ok once I watched the video but now that I see your response to this person's question it confused me all over again. She said she has a 3 prong but they put the white wire that came attached with the dryer in the middle. But in your video you are separating it and putting it to the left with green screw. Let me just ask my question so I don't make this more confusing. Ok so we qon a dryer that was using a 4 prong. We bought a 3 prong since we live in older townhouse that uses 3 plug prong. The white wire that came with dryer is attached to the middle. And we've had it this way because it was like that woth the 4 prong. Are you saying that when we switched from 4 to 3 that we should of taken the white wire that's attached to dryer and move it from the middle to the side just like in your video? Basically I do exactly what you did in video? Again I live in older townhouse, switched to 3 prong, and right now the white wire is attached in the middle with the three grey wires I have hooked up. Thank you for your time.

    @lexxilove7755 the difference between the 3 wire and 4 wire is that on a 3wire the neutral has a bonding wire which goes to the frame of your dryer to act as the ground. Most dryers are usually already set up for 3 wire. 4 wire requires you to move the bonding jumper to the neutral, and use the 4wire dedicated ground where you had the jumper wire. Just make sure on your 3wire that your ground/neutral is working and has continuity, otherwise you could get shocked.

    My new Midea electric dryer came with the white ground wire already attached to the middle (ground) of the 3 connection screws. I’m going to remove it and attach it to the green screw in the body of the washer, as in your video. I took a pic but can’t include it in my reply.

    Looks like the new dryer arrived ready for a 4-prong plug, with the white neutral wire intended to be doubled on the middle connection screw with the middle prong of the power cord. Now I’ll just move that white wire over to the green ground screw and connect the power cord. Life is good! Thanks again for your great videos. (Now, on to the dryer venting haha)

    You MAY have an old "soft Breaker" Try turning the breaker on/off if the switch doesn't click or switches easy then you may have an old failing breaker. Compare it to others in the panel. Breakers can break down.

    For your viewers. Before you do this to your dryer, pull the plate off of the receptacle, and verify that there is only black, white, and bare. If there is black, white, red, and bare, someone has changed the receptacle to three wire. You should always install 4 wire receptacle and 4wire plug when you can. The only reason 3 wire cords are sold are for houses built before the late 80’s that only have two conductors with ground installed.

    Idk if you fixed it yet. I dealt with the same issue today. We just cut the end off of the wire stripped it and reattached to the existing terminal after taking apart and cleaning terminal with wire brush. We had several other issues leading up to it including replacing thermal fuse and door switch.

    120V in America, sharing ground with neutral! 3 Phase in a house! Aluminium wiring that can catch fire! Never understand why the Americans did these things. An earth should be an earth so if 120v comes in contact with it there is no question it will go to earth. In the Uk those connections inside the drier would be Live, Neutral, earth and would be covered with a plastic cover, so if anyone took off the back cover they have no access to the mains connections, it would be 250v here and single phase. In Europe they have three phase 230v in their houses, handy if you have something three phase like a lathe in your workshop..
