I'm watching this video possibly for the 3rd time. It's September 2023 now and I first started watching your build series when i was recovering from Covid in 2021, i binged it as I was bed ridden for maybe a month or so. Your build series was the best i found then, but my word look at you now. I rated your videos (the build series) and still do, you should go back and watch a few videos from back then and compare to what you're producing now. These videos are BRILLIANT but your current ones are so professionally done now, impressed to see how you've grown as a channel. Thanks for the YEARS of entertainment.

Love seeing Louise figuring things out, doing stuff at awkward angles, without work benches or fancy tools, etc. The physicality is beguiling. I have watched a lot of #vanlife and this conveys "real" a lot better than others.

You do tidy work is very good. Few comments for others watching the video, These sockets come with a foam type gasket that you put on before inserting into the van this offers a cushion effect helps with vibration and some weather protection, I tend to also add a thin line of non adhesive sealant, she was right to consider doing this. Also don't forget to paint the drill holes, I understand they protected the large hole but not the screw holes, if your drilling can paint then or if you use drill screws just undo and paint all four then redo.

10/10 nicely done 😁👍 and definitely the right choice earthing to chassis. Just subscribed to your channel and looking forward to watching all your videos

I wasn't particularly fussed with the idea of having mains hook up but as I'm only just about to start my build, and the days are already getting shorter, it actually makes sense to add it at the start even if its just to be able to use lights to extend the working day. I have to say as well, I was cacking myself at the thought of doing it but you've actually made it look pretty simplistic. Thanks for that. :-)

Well done ! My only point is that the 6 amp breaker is best suited for low voltage lighting ( eg: led) with perhaps a further two breakers (16 amp for power socket - suitable for a 750 watt microwave ) and a 25-30 amp for an induction cooktop of around 2500 watts... cheers

Hope you don't mind me saying but when you're screwing anything onto the van it will be much more secure if you put some plywood on the inside and then screw straight through and into the plywood. It will give it a much more secure fixing and greater longevity.

Hi, a couple of observations, Firstly I personally put all 230v flex in a piece of dedicated conduit for added protection, your board as shown is only a short run so fine but if you were to say run any of it around, through up and over the metal work in the van etc then conduits pretty essential. Secondly yes you did the right thing earthing the supply to the chassis this is mandated in BS7671 but there is a sting in the tail: All Caravan installations should comply with BS7671. Within that, regulation 721.411.3.1.2 states: "This requires structural metallic parts that are accessible from within the caravan to be connected through main protective bonding conductors to the main earthing terminal within the caravan." So good so far but, Regulation 708.411.4 states: "The Electricity Safety, Quality and Continuity Regulations 2002 (ESQCR) prohibits the connection of a protective multiple earthing (PME) facility to any metalwork in a leisure accommodation vehicle (including a caravan)." This effectively means no Caravan if wired in accordance with regulation 721 should be connected to a typical UK domestic supply if it has PME based earthing. Most UK properties use PME. The problem with the latter is nobody in the van community seems to know that, I didn't until I did my own research! If any form of warning is included in new Camper and Caravan owners manuals I doubt it in plain enough English for the layman to understand. So we all, in ignorance, happily plug our vans in to our household domestic supplies. Obviously you don't hear of people being electrocuted so the risk must be low but there is still a risk. The reason for that risk is because PME uses the supply Neutral as earth, if a fault develops with the supply then there is a possibility of the vehicle chassis rising to a dangerous voltage which could find a path to earth through a body as they contact the vehicle on entry. To correctly connect a Caravan to a UK Domestic supply whilst remaining compliant requires that supply to use a different earthing method. This can be achieved at home via a variety of methods but in reality I know of no one that has ever been advised to do so by a salesman or by an electrician whilst signing off the work. Obviously that would only mitigate the risk at that one location not on a friends drive etc! Lastly a mains tester is well worth having in your van especially if using hookups abroad where they can get the live and Neutrals reversed. The Kewcheck 103 is excellent to keep in the van and only costs around £18. HTH.

Hi there, we have a reverse polarity tester for when abroad and our one run of flex cable to the single plug socket we have in the van is this side of the insulation and walls in a protected cable way. As for plugging in to your house, it's not necessarily the correct thing to do but we've only really done this to test the initial install, although many, many vanners do it on a regular basis to top up the batteries. @criftinscampers Having just studied all these electrical regulations I agree with your statement completely and wish to add that the ESQCR regulations are STATUTORY which means they are the LAW, unlike British Standards which are basically a guide. So the hook up earth must NOT be connected to the steel van body. A pinned comment to that effect would be advisable considering how popular you guys are in the vanlife community. Best wishes Greg x

Thanks for the video. Something I'm thinking of doing. I have lithium batteries, but it would be great if I could hook up to campsite hookups and use a big charger for them. One question, when you drill the screws through the van, do you have to do anything to protect it from going rusty ? Like paint it with some anti rust paint or something ?

Hi, I have an old t25 1986 autosleeper. I got it back from the garage after they wired up the fridge. It works on 12 volt but not on 240 volt for hook up. In fact nothing works now on 240volts, no fridge, no lights, no sockets. I have checked my hook up cable, my external 240 volt cable and feed and fuse box all ok. Any ideas, what is going on?

Hey, loving the videos. Have learnt so much from you guys. Quick question (still trying to understand everything it’s all so confusing 🤯). As you mention in your video your rcd/mcb is connected to your single plug socket via 6a which I believe it mostly good for lighting etc. Did you use this exact same setup when plugging in your battery charger, straight in to the single plug socket? Was 6A enough?

Hi Charlie, from memory (it's a while back now) the battery charger is plugged into wired into the other side, I think that one was 13 amp, but the van isn't here at the moment or I would check. I can't remember entirely, I know they were different amps but can't remember if definitely was 13, could have been 3!If you can wait a few weeks till the van is back I can check, sorry I can't be of more help.

Hi. Stumbled on your video. Was entertaining. But I'm concerned about grounding to the chassis. If there is a problem from the shore power outlet to the distribution box (consumer unit), you will be fine as long as you stay in the van. Because the tires are insulating you from ground. But if you step out and touch the van it could be a deadly shock. Since now the current can go from the electrified van chassis, through your body, and finally to the ground to complete the circuit. We usually ground things to protect the electronics. Your Gfci (rccb) that I saw you install will protect you from any faults in the van. And if there is a problem, the AC ground to the chassis is only a hazard and probably will fry your DC van components like your house battery. This is already a problem with motor homes. Search RV hot skin and you'll see what I'm talking about. Hope this doesn't scare you. Just trying to be helpful to another van lifer. Cheers!

Hi there, thanks for the comment and for watching the video. I think I mentioned in the video how controversial this topic is, it causes many an argument amongst van builders so I'm not going to get into a long winded debate about it. After months of research this is what I found to be the best and safest way, it's since been checked by two auto electricians (qualified) and they agree that it's done correctly. Like I say, this is just the way I've done it and I'm not saying it's definitely correct but I'm happy with the install and even more happy that 2 certified electricians have said its right. Hi Chloe, to be honest this was so long ago I can’t remember now and I wouldn’t want to give you the wrong info. I remember more about the 12v wiring as I had to do a lot more of it but I just bought this as a kit and fitted it and my brain has now decided I don’t need that info anymore. Hi just found your channel and Ive watched this video thanks for posting I have a question thats been confounding me for a while now maybe you can shed some light on it for me The van as we know runs on a 12 volt system powered by a leisure battery that runs all the appliances such as lights fridge etc . . then you have an electric hookup such as you have here that together with an inverter runs appliances on a 240 system such as you find in a house my question is how do you use that system? does it run side by side with the 12 volt one do you install wiring and sockets at the build stage and simply plug in as and when needed and how does the 240 system charge the 12 volt system sorry but im a complete noob and i want to understand how all this works for my own van build next winter

Hi Michael, I don't actually have an inverter, although most people will have. My system is entirely 12v, as I have managed to find 13v chargers and options for everything we wish to run in the van. If there are specific 240 appliances you want to have you may well need an inverter for when you are not on hook up, however it does waste power converting 12v to 240v and then often back down to something like 19v for a laptop or something, that's why we don't have one. The way I understand it is most people have some sort of switchover for their 240 sockets depending on if they are hooked up or not but I don't know much about it, I think I would just run two separate sets of sockets, one from the inverter and one from hook up, just to keep it simple. As for charging the batteries, this is the only reason we have put in the hook up, so if our solar isn't great we have the option to charge the batteries. We have a victron mains charger that just plugs in to one of our sockets, and then I have put in one more socket that we can plug things into if we are hooked up at a campsite. And yes, I had to fit this, and run all the cables pretty early on in the build, it was one of my very first jobs. Hope that is of some help to you, and thanks for watching 😁👍

Thank you 😁😁 Well you can charge them from wherever you plug it in, a campsite, a stop over. We charge ours from our house. We have also added a solar panel now so if it is sunny it costs us nothing 😁

Hi charity, sorry we don't have a link. I think we bought it as a kit over the phone from a company called Rayne automotive, if it wasn't them it would have been 12v planet. Both really good companies for this kind of stuff.

Could do with sealeant/adhesive under that socket as it will leak with time.

@@lukejamesharper4382 condensation from the inside wall of the van 'could' leak through the hole and cause buildup of mould on the gasket. But like Louise said it'll last for a few years so jobs a good'n.

Is it the same system for a caravan? Electricians have quoted me £500 ish to install what you’ve done in the video...

We have one single and a double wired to this.

These consumer units are so sensitive it may not be necessary to earth the unit. they are made to prevent any shock to the person. But you lose nothing by earthing it. I earthed mine
