Thanks Graham. Helpful video. One of the clearest explanations of how it’s possible to lean inwards to counter the G-force of the turn, providing that outer ski edge has cut its line in the snow, and the three ways by which this can be done, including upper body separation. There’s so much gobbledegook out there and one cannot overstate the importance of precise, brief and clear explanation. Having retired from work, I’m enjoying lots of skiing in Austria and Italy before my 90 Schengen days expire and I’m back in the U.K. BTW, I always enjoyed watching you on Ski Sunday racing down the mountain with your brother a few tenths behind! David.

Really good coaching. Thanks. Started carving on a near empty red piste in Alto Sangro in Italy a couple of years ago. It's great.

I've been doing the poles-free hip drill! Don't think I've heard anyone say it helps attain edge angle so great to know. I've got 3 no-poles drills: hands/arms across the chest, hands on hips, and hands on hip flexors. I like doing 1 of each to warm up, especially on a firm waiting to thaw day. I've skied with both poles behind my back, but I like what you displayed, I can't wait to try that!

There was some Yes in there but mostly No! 2:00 This part was good to show you how to keep your upper body as vertical as possible and rotating your legs to Fine Tune the grip your skis have on the snow. The rest of it was describing what things look like without teaching how to make them look like that. You have to come up with what makes the look and the feel happen and then forget them because they will happen naturally when you do what they skis need from you. For turning a parallel turn into a carved turn, this is all you have to do and it's easy to remember. You are traversing on your right foot. You want to make a carved turn to the Right! There is a stool to your Right. You want to rest your Right cheek on the edge of the stool. Take your weight off your Right foot, lift you Right cheek and slide it over onto the Right stool. Everything you think about is in the direction of the turn you want to make. By lifting your cheek, you are forcing your upper body to stay vertical. The more you slide your cheek over the stool, the steeper the leg angle. Everything that that happens in your body is the byproduct of doing that. You don't think about them, and you don't teach them. During that turn, you adjust the edge control by leaning your knees into the hill very slightly which will get the skis a little more on edge. It doesn't take much. That makes you ankles lean over but that is a byproduct that you shouldn't think about.

These are good examples of how to practice edge angles. Sadly, you don't see many people practising it.

New skier here. All these drills with no poles. But where do I leave my poles on the mountain?

Normally I'll just leave them by the top of the lift. Knock on wood haven't had a set pinched yet.

@@cswalker21 either have a friend carry them for you or leave them by the top of the lift or on a ski rack if it feels safe to do so 😀
