Well done for recognizing your limits and making the sensible call! Too many people can't bring themselves to turn back when the summit is so close and end up putting themselves (and rescuers) in danger. Its hard to turn back when you've come so far, especially in front of others, but this is by far the more impressive and courageous choice.

I hate loose rocks like this on inclines with no clear path! Had something similar (but probably not quite as steep) on the last 1.5 km to the Zugspitze in Germany. I hated it and thought I would slide back down the mountain. Made it up in the end, but would not have made it if it was any steeper or longer and if I wasn't surrounded by other hikers that day (I'm also a solo hiker but this mountain is tourist trap). I must have been the slowest beetle on the entire damn mountain, crawling up the mountainside on all fours. Going back down by foot was not an option with my heavy pack on my back unless I wanted to break my neck, so the only way was up. And this mountain looks way scarier! Mad respect to you for getting this far and knowing your limits.

Routes that rely on scree traverses are much more serious than I get the impression you are taking them! You should seek a wider range of expert opinions on the risks you are taking here I think you are stepping up too far. There are at least 3 dangers: 1: the steepness of the traverse will not remain exactly constant. You could slide and not stop, or stop only once in a remote terrain trap like a steep hanging valley. This is really serious. 2. The scree is there because of weathering rock above and the borderline stability of the slope for that material. Periodically it will move or large pieces will bounce through it. 3. The scree covers or recovers any path. You cannot always know whether you are following a road to nowhere. That requires you to know when to stop hoping 'just a bit further or steeper, it might work out round the corner' - a dangerous and ultimately impossible judgement to always get right.

I tend to be way less even footed and alert, when my legs are already seriously tired and would never chance walking outside of a safe path. Just looking at that hillside gives me goosebumps.
