Here's a weird thing. My daughter's and my uncle's handwriting is almost identical (both lovely, legible and distinctive styles). My uncle died before my daughter was born and she never saw my uncle's handwriting until she was an adult and was really baffled when she saw a letter he'd written me and said she couldn't remember writing it. I knew who the letter was from (I'd kept it because it was such a lovely letter and I still treasure it) and until that moment I'd not really connected how spookily alike their handwriting was.

I found out when I was about 19 that my handwriting looked very very similar to my great grandmothers. My mom always tried to make hers look like my great grandmothers but was always too 'neat' whereas somehow I picked it up despite never having actually seen her handwriting until I was 19 and saw the letters she's written to my mother why my mother was 19. Super weird.

Hi Leah, I have been trying to get my son to write legibly since he was in Year 3/Year 4. He is now in Year 9 and not much improvements. I did start him off with getting back to basics with just writing the single character alphabets but as you mentioned its the combination of words, spacing, levelling, hand tension and how all this comes together which gives me quiet confidence and excitement that will greatly help in improving his writing legibility. Couldnt have agreed more - its not about perfection..but efficiency and legibility. Love your work ❤

I always start with one shape and end with a completely different one. I've been watching a lot of videos but most of them don't really teach anything. I am so happy to have found an expert who really knows what she is talking about. Thank you so much, you have been a great help.❤

I just found your channel this morning and really enjoy learning from you. Your talk of tension and such in writing reminded me of the admiration expressed in Asian cultures for calligraphy. I have read it stems from the belief that someone’s calligraphy skill is informative about the person and their state of mind or even their swordsmanship. I found the following quote from a writing called “ The Sword and the Brush” you might find interesting. “In this quest for perfection emotions play a very important role. In calligraphy, emotions are laid bare, embodied directly on paper, and can no longer be concealed or hidden in any way. It is not allowed to touch up the lines once they are drawn. In both brush strokes and sword strokes, movements need smoothness, but at the same time energy. There should be neither tension nor flabbiness; in this way the movements will be fluid and energetic. To achieve this state one has to train his breathing and posture and, above all, his attention. The mind must be emptied of thoughts. The ink on the paper is a reflection of one's mind. Likewise, the movements of the sword are reflections of one's mind. Any emotion that appears to cloud calm is perceived either on paper or in combat. There must be no doubt. Another important similarity between calligraphy and martial arts is rhythm. In calligraphy, strokes have to follow a certain order, and the brush must move smoothly between one stroke and the next, just as martial arts movements must be chained rhythmically and smoothly. If the attention drops, the rhythm breaks. Both arts are forms of meditation in motion, exercises of mantaining attention uninterruptedly. Although each movement requires a certain speed, neither the brush nor the sword can stop.” Just interesting stuff. Thank you for your work.

It's incredibly cool how in just about every video, things you've concentrated on before pop up later on... this one was nearly all-encompassing. As a writer, I love doing several passes on a page and crowd the margins with additional notes. Anxiety and arthritis do not lend themselves well to this practice and I nearly laughed aloud at the truncated "apple." What an excellent video! I don't have trouble recommending this channel because one may truly drop in anywhere and glean something from any episode. It's really nice to see you settling into your new place and- ...now, what do we need to do to afford you a boom stand for that supplemental page gazing camera??? Light pencil sketch’s could be able to teach you how to ease your muscles when writing. I don’t know though, I’m not expert. Have a good day :)

And i can’t maintain inconsistency. i think it reflect aspects of my character that i am working on. But i do think i will do the practice as suggested. I think just being legible always would be a big step up. I was once reading a grey crime book and saw a photo of the handwriting of a woman who had killed some one and was an embezzler. Her writing was picture perfect beautiful which at the time puzzled me. Now i know !

Tysm for this!! I most likely have dysgraphia so legibility has always been a big issue for me. When I began school I was receiving therapy for it, although they never labelled the problem. I have no idea why I stopped receiving help though because my writing is still illegible! Even I can’t read my writing sometimes! I’d given up on improving it but over the last year I realised how important handwriting is to me so I want to try again. I’d always preferred handwriting for study, I just find it helps my focus and memory more. But recently I stopped journalling on paper and started writing in my notes app and after over a year of that I’ve realised I don’t process my emotions as well when I’m typing. I also love cards, I love receiving them and giving them. There’s little to no resources for adults with this disability so I really appreciate videos like yours and your acknowledgment that some people have extra challenges with writing really means a lot!

Been waiting for this one bc I’m having to improve with my non dominant hand now bc thumb injury due to perfectionist writing with my dom hand I think it’s important to mention that for autistic and writers with hypermobile joints the FOCUS should be more on first the best possible grip and hand position, then working out where the origin of the arm/wrist/muscle movements begin, then with the basic strokes from which all letters are comprised. Drawing and penmanship exercises other than “copying letters” are very useful. Mostc things kids my age (when we were kids, that is...) are problematic because teachers at that level when kids are writing were not even aware of neuro-muscular and proprioceptive differences. Also; perfectionist tendencies and self monitoring every damn letter as we write it inhibits letting muscle memory develop and “just flowing”. Also: POSTURE. if you have a poor posture and Don’t set up your writing space/page the right way, it’s gonna stop you progressing. IK this vid is for peeps just enhancing their existing ability to write, but as someone who writes just as badly with dominant or non-dominant hand, I’ve been studying this extensively lately

Subscribed. I like your advice on relaxing as you write. People over the years tell me I have beautiful writing. I don’t know, but think they are just being kind. I was a building inspector for 30 year’s and had tons of reports daily. Since retirement, I’ve had no reason to write and recently purchased multiple Spencerian handbooks with Nib Pen in hopes of learning this style. At 71 years of age I have time to practice daily as you stated, writing daily certainly has been great honing letters that have become consistent to read. I have a great desire for learning calligraphy after Spencerian. Keep up the good work young lady. Your parents must be very proud of you for being an excellent teacher to us who are never too old to be taught.

Thank you!! My daughter is off to NC State University this year, and I’ve been so worried about how her handwriting may affect note taking, as some professors have a zero electronics policy and she won’t be able to type them. Her handwriting has always been completely illegible, but she is highly sensitive/self-conscious, so I am careful to only interfere when I’m sure it’s something that will truly affect her…and not my putting my expectations/wants for myself onto her. Anyway, your No Perfectionism process is excellent, and Im grateful I came across! Side note…I’ve been interested in psychological handwriting analysis since 1984, and am surprised it hasn’t been given ample attention in all that time.

This, Leah, is the video I have been waiting for!! Over the course of my life, I have been subject to quite a bit of teasing from classmates about my handwriting. It really isn't that illegible or anything, it's just not the "perfect girl handwriting" you would expect, especially from a model student like me, I guess. Equally from my parents there has been "Why don't you dot your 'i's? Do you think it's cool/edgy to write this way" yada yada yada. Even a teacher from my - I guess the american equivalent would be - freshman year of highschool used to really be on our cases about it, even making us point out "imperfections" in other people's handwriting in front of the whole class. Like, how am I supposed to write a good poem analysis in 90 minutes if you're only making me focus on form!!?? Since finding your channel, I found out that I just focus more on speed and a lot of things that make my handwriting unique are connected to some nice traits of mine! I want others to be able to read my handwriting and share in whatever ideas I have written down, but not at the cost of my individuality - this is the perfect guide to that, thank you

Leah, much of your suggestions on improving one's handwriting are certainly valid and important, but I noticed that you actually do not hold your pen properly. All attempts at improving handwriting start with the proper hold of the pen i.e. hold pen between thumb and index finger resting on third finger. This will result in the first step writing skill.

Many people start writing with a light grip on the pen, which is good, but then tighten their grip as they continue to write, which is not optimal. Therefore, I would first be cognizant of the tightness of your grip. If you find yourself holding the pen more firmly as you continue to write, try to ease the tension in your muscles. This may help improve your handwriting.

Great video! I just found your channel. My handwriting sucks, but I found an old school notebook in which I printed really well. I am an inverted lefty. I recall vividly my kindergarten teacher putting a piece of paper on our desks and telling us to rotate them counterclockwise (I'm sure she showed us rather than said "counterclockwise"!). She never noticed that I held my pencil with my left hand. I wrote from above the lines. Over time my paper ended up sideway and I wrote up the page. If I want to improve my handwriting, should I exercise with my page turned a different way?

Interesting video. The thing I struggle with my handwriting is being left handed you push your pen as you write rather than pull it and it can be a challenge to see what I am writing as my wrist gets in the way. These aren’t problems when I sketch in my sketchbook because my strokes are from right to left. It sounds kind of weird, doesn’t it?

My handwriting is legible, but growing up through primary school and then about 1½ years into secondary school, it was atrocious. Teachers made everyone do joined up handwriting, where all the letters connect. Personally, I always just found this _super_ difficult, I couldn't do it well. So, I did this as a child throughout school for 7½ years, and it hardly improved from age 6 to age 13. However, in year 8, I started doing it unjoined. I got in trouble a few times, but they weren't as strict with it, and I just ignored them and continued with it. My handwriting eventually got quite a lot better, way better, in fact, and I could write way faster. However, it still doesn't look that great, I wish it looked better, and I'm absolutely convinced that teachers hindered my ability to write well by forcing me to write joined up for so many years. If you are a parent watching this, or future parent, when your kid(s) go to school, make sure they are able to write in whichever way they're most comfortable with/find the easiest. I find it so irritating that not everyone is able to do joined up handwriting well and for some reason, adults think it's the be all, end all method for achieving the best handwriting. It may be for people that can use it, but I have noticed many others that use joined up now/did when I was a kid, and it looked very similar to mine, like, it had the same idiosyncrasies. Pretty sure this isn't an uncommon thing. Also, I've no idea why teachers act like not joining up letters will result in you not being able to write properly, shit is stupid.

Wouldn't the way you hold your pen affect the legibility of your writing?

Hi Leah, I've been enjoying your videos. Quick question - what does it mean if your handwriting is all over the place? I can write very nicely if I try, but when I am writing notes it looks like ten different people wrote them. For many years I even had several different signatures. (I made a specific point to pick one and now I try stick with it) Any thoughts?

I have the same thing, while I have no idea if it’s related to this I’m pretty sure I have dysgraphia/specific learning disability in written expression. I had an occupational therapist help me with my handwriting when I started school but they never put a label on the issue even though I later failed tests solely because of illegible handwriting. I’m not sure why I stopped getting help 😅 Anyway, if you have awful handwriting and you’ve ruled out technique problems or lack of practice it might be worth looking into this! If you have other difficulties with fine motor skills something else might better explain it though? Anyway, there’s no harm in learning even if it doesn’t end up being relevant to you so I wanted to let you know this exists!

Okay I loved your video (especially the perfectionism part and it's very no-nonsense so yeah haha) For me, I don't like my writing but the worst is the size of my letters. Maybe it's because I write in cursive (I'm french) and used to have big-lines-small-lines notebooks growing up but the same sentence, I have sometimes caps letter then uncapped letters then uncapped letter written a bit bigger.. it's all a bit weird ^^

My handwriting has become quite bad. It was reasonably neat when I was a kid, (small, upright, mostly not joined up) but later I decided to try to change my style to look more like Victorian cursive (all joined up, sloping, and with looping 'l's and curly 'r's and flouncy capitals). Then I went a long time without writing much and doing more typing than anything else, and I found myself with a scruffy and inconsistent style. I think I need to slow down and focus on doing one style or the other. I can write both styles neatly if I put my mind to it, but when I'm just writing without thinking about it, it all looks a mess, having no default style in my muscle memory...

I can’t even read my own handwriting at times because it’s often me trying to copy/take notes from a lesson/video as fast as possible so everything becomes chicken scratch - any tips on how to write faster but also legible/smoother?? (Edit: Maybe you have a video like that, i’ll go check but I wanted to comment this first just in case)

My problem is that I write too quickly, my handwriting is very loopy and dosent have sharp angles whilst also being serverly illegible (I use a computer in lessons because of how illegible my handwriting has become) my letters aren’t close together either. I struggle with forming the letters correctly whilst also at the pace of my brain. My Brain tries to write every letter t once in the word causing unnecessary loops as I try to draw the correct letter. I think for me my problem is that my brain is too fast for my writing. I think for me the best solution is using my other hand so I’m forced to slow down and properly form the letters. My handwriting in my non dominant hand has somehow become more legible than my right hand lol. I will definitely be using these tips to help with my left hand writing as I notice my writing is very angular and tense in my left hand. Though I wonder what that means in grapheology, having oposite traits depending on what hand I write in. My writing also frequently changes to the point of not loooking like the same person wrote it. I love your videos and would like to know how to look for traits in writing that changes a lot and how to find and analyse consistency’s in the writing. ❤

writing! breaking up a can of beans. I was transferred from a normal school at age 8 for not progressing I did not seem to learn to read or write. dyslexia was not known then, I am talking about 1973. I got a lot of special after-school teaching but found my reading and writing got somewhat acceptable as I am at my 30ties. about the same time as I got diagnosed with ADHD (which frequently overlaps with dyslexia).

2:52 I wouldn't circle anything, perfectly fluently readable. Personally I noticed that state of mind is important for me. If I just want to get over with some writing it becomes stuff I can't even read later. SOmetimes that's annoying sometimes it happens. because I want to bring it as fast to paer as I can think it and rereading isn't needed, because writing is just helping me with thinking straight. If the task at hand has me highly motivated and invested in the topic my handwriting is perfectly fine.
