How to Improve Your Ability to Kneel Without Pain (It's Easier Than You Think!)

Learn how to improve your ability to kneel on the ground. Pain with kneeling is too often categorized as "age-related" or based on wear and tear. In this video, I discuss why any problem with kneeling often has more to do with the function of your knee, rather than time or poor genetics, and offer up 2 simple exercises to help address the root dysfunction associated with knee pain and kneeling.

    Thanks for these exercises, Grant Frost. I subscribed immediately after watching your creatively designed knee workout. I may adapt your exercises to kneeling next to and getting into my bed every night. 78 yr old ex runner, stroke survivor here. Stroke doctors told my sisters I had a week left at best to live, better start closing my estate. Fortunately I didn't have much of an estate to close since that was back in 2007. Came out of semi-conscientiousness with total left side paralysis. Took 3 months of steady work in rehab, but walked out of that particular facility with a cane, 85% recovered. I'd lost the ability to run, but I never lost the runner's mentality gained over decades of roadwork, running through good and bad weather and tons of minor pains and injuries. People who had come into rehab with me had just started to get over their depression.They were beginning their rehab as I was walking out the door. Therapists and psychologists say there are five stages of depression we must go through before we can ever get past it. No one said that we have to start out depressed. Think positive thoughts! In the end it matters.

    I have not been able to kneel due to pain with pressure below the kneecaps. I have tried knee pads and assorted cushions. I have had physical therapy due to left knee replacement. I have expressed the goal of being able to get up off the floor without pain, but the therapists never address that. I just tried kneeling on my bed and was happy that the pain was not there. I will be trying your exercises.

    I'm going into ems and kneeling is very important. Especially when your holding someone's C-spine in place. It's hard. My hole body shakes when I'm kneeling, and I'm only 19. I played American Football for 10 years and wrestled for 5. During that time I had no problem. 1 year off and now it's an incredible problem. I hope this helps!

    I enjoyed watching this video, Grant, and have recently had some difficulty crouching down on the floor as my knees get sore. I am in my 50s and work as a professional painting contractor and spend quite a lot of time working on my knees. Also, I recently had x-rays on both knees and I do have some arthritis behind my knee caps and I received steroid injections to help minimize the pain. Additionally, I have also started an exercise program with a physical therapist and she wants me to strengthen my quads and hip muscles in order to reduce any inflammation. I may try your exercises eventually as well!

    The test isn't the most important part of the video. It's an example of something one could do as a pretest in order to gauge any progress from the exercises over time. It's scaleable based on each person's specific ability.

    I can’t even get into the starting position of kneeling on my knees. The lateral right knee area has stabbing electric pain and the left is just starting to hurt but I want to prevent it from getting like the right. What do I do if I can’t even get down on my knees due to pain like shown in this video?

    Thanks for your advice, when I kneel, I am feeling it in the tendons at the front of my ankles(ie where you do your shoe laces up) is there any way to stretch/reduce the soreness that is geenerated at this spot, please?

  • @YourWellnessNerd

    @YourWellnessNerd

    2 жыл бұрын

    I can't be too specific for you mate without assessing you first. But from a general perspective if the front of the shin and ankle is tight, massage through the area can help, so can gently letting a tennis ball press into any tight spots in the shin above the ankle itself. There are other things but obviously it's best you see someone in person to make sure you get the most appropriate advice!

    so i'm trying this out. i've had 5 knee surgeries (3 on left, 2 on right). It's seems flat feet, pigeon toes and sports (gymnastics & tennis) don't mix! I've lost some flexibility in both knees due to the surgeries. And I have extremely tight quads & calves (full calf). Calves are so tight, I tend to pop calve muscles periodically. Thing is my knees are extremely sore to even kneel or put any pressure on them. And now i'm into standup paddleboarding so I need to be able to kneel to do that (at least be able to do it for a little while). What happens is when my legs are straight for too long or when my body weight is on the knee, they not only hurt but they swell. So with these stretches should the swelling ease over time too?

  • @YourWellnessNerd

    @YourWellnessNerd

    3 жыл бұрын

    Its always hard to comment on specific cases over the internet Lisa, but what I can say is that the more slack you can feed into the knee from above and below, the better those knees should feel. Id expect swelling to improve but everyone is a little different :)

Maybe my bone is sensitive idk And also my bone will sometimes be bruised just by putting pressure on hard ground

    Hi mate unfortunately I can’t give specific advice over the Internet as I can’t assess you for myself from a general perspective. Pain at the back of the knee. Could mean an issue like a bakers cyst or it could be a neural thing that originates from the lower back lower back dysfunction could also cause tightness through the thighs but again it’s something that you would need someone to have assessed specifically to give you the best advice. I hope you’ve since found the answers you were looking for!
