How to Improve Gunpla Snapbuilds - 3 easy tips

Ойын-сауық

Hey Everyone,
Someone asked me how they can improve their builds even if they're not ready to paint. After a great deal of contemplation, I figured I'd put together a video on how to improve gunpla snapbuilds in 3 easy tips.
If you haven't started painting yet, how many of these do you do? Let me know in the comments below. If you HAVE started painting, how many of these were you doing BEFORE you started painting? Let me know as well!

    Thanks dude! People were wondering why I didn't pin or glue Bulma to the base and used the clear plastic stand. This is the reason. 😁

    Be interesting to see how a kit is effected when given a top coat as fully assembled and individual parts being done

    Hey dude! Great observation! Generally if you are patient and methodical, you can catch just about every part with the topcoat wether assembled or disassembled. I did this one as assembled since people might not have the means to do a separate assembly, and that a fully assembled topcoat is perfectly fine.

    What about bigger or more intricate kits? Maybe hard to reach places etc would that be when you dissemble particular sections etc.

    For bigger kits (MG, PG, etc.), my suggestion is to top coat sections, instead of individual pieces. For example, each leg, each arm, the torso, the head, weapons, etc., using an alligator pin on a stick to hold the part and ensure an even cot. I do that regularly (even with many HG) and it works well, allowing an uniform coat everywhere. Another to is to mask any clear plastic parts (visors, eyes, etc.) to preserve their transparency (unless you look for a foggy windshield look for your gunpla).

    Gundam markers are *sooo* nice as a newbie, primarily because they add a lot to your kit without needing to learn anything special to make it pretty. Best advice I can give for using them for panel lines is to let the marker dry for a few minutes or so before taking the eraser to it, at least when using fine point ones (never used pour type so won't comment on them). This helps make sure your erasing only takes off the mistakes you made outside the line, not your lines themselves. That being said, you can ignore this step if you're trying to make a shadowed effect on a part with multiple depths to it instead, which can be really cool. Did it on my HG Moon Gundam, partly on accident, eventually on purpose, and those Psycho Plates look amazing.

    Hey! Thanks for the tip. I agree, let the marker dry a bit before wiping it up. This goes for pour types too. I haven't tried using it as a shadow effect, but that sounds awesome! 😁

    I did do this before airbrushing. Although I dont paint every kit unless its a custom. I know some like to paint kits the color it already is but thats not for me. So some kits I keep as is. I will panel line and sometimes topcoat it. Though I prefer a satin finish or semi gloss. Sometimes I feel that flat or matte coats can make it look dead or like the mobile suit is turned off. Really it all depends on the look I'm going for. Lol. But Airbrush and still will do a lot of these tricks. Also one of my all time favorite tips is to use a gloss spray on the eyes. After putting the eye sticker on put that part on an alligator clip and give it a quick gloss spray. This makes those eyes shine! I do that on a lot of HGs if I'm not going to paint them.

    I'm not interested in airbrushing either. I have some of the markers and I may move to the Tamiya line color paint, but I'm really not planning on getting much more fancy than that. Good video.

    Another very nice video. Gundam markers are excellent. If you cannot get hold of then, a viable alternative is to use fine tipped (0.005 or even 0.03 mm) ink pens from a school supply or art store. They erase like the markers.

    Hey! Good question. I went back and checked, these are IBO decals #2, and if I'm thinking of the right thing, the red part holder is the DSPIAE Omnidirectional pin vice. If it is, you can find my review here: kzread.info/dash/bejne/op5psryAgZu8frQ.html Hope this helps and best of luck! 😁

    I tend to see people top-coating after assembly, rather than top coating each section separately. How do you make sure the paint gets into all the nooks and crannies?

  • @PlamoTherapist

    @PlamoTherapist

    2 жыл бұрын

    Hey Citrus, great question! You can angle the kit to reach the nooks and crannies of parts and pieces. It will not be a complete coverage as doing separate individual parts would be, but if you're not used to painting and just want to coat the visible areas of the kit, this will get the job done short and simple. This by no means is a tutorial on getting kits to a competition level, but is something that can be done in a relatively short time that can improve the look of the kit for any skill level. Hope this answers your question. 😁

    what r ur thoughts on sanding and polishing? worth the time?

  • @PlamoTherapist

    It really comes down to personal preference. I personally like the meditative mode it puts me in, but some people find it to be extremely tedious. 🤣 I feel like it's definitely more important on snap builds and builds like this with a simple matte coat, but not absolutely necessary. I will say that the gunprimer balancers are a good balance between nub removal and sanding/polishing. Not too many steps, but definitely can make a kit shine for sure. Hope this answers your question! Thank you so much for watching and commenting!

  • @PlamoTherapist

    @PlamoTherapist

    11 ай бұрын

    Hey there! Great question! That's generally the process for a fully painted build. However, in this video if you don't have the tools to paint a kit, but want to jazz it up, you can simply topcoat the plastic with a matte clear coat to get rid of that plastic-looking shine.

    @@PlamoTherapist Oh yeah. If I didn't have a condo board that breathes down the neck of anyone using them (something about a former tenant leaving cardboard box shaped overspray patterns in Citadel Chaos Black all over the building's back porch - no it wasn't me, I did that in the parking lot where overspray couldn't be seen!) and lived in an area that's winter six months of the year, I'd seriously be using rattle cans. They're incredibly useful tools!
