➤➤Transcript (Partial):
Do you have any practical advice on how I can improve my ability to concentrate and pay attention to the world around me? Often the devil's in the details, you know? But, some practical advice is, well, regulate your habits. Try to get up at approximately the same time each morning. I would recommend that you get up approximately when other people get up. So that would be something in the neighborhood of 7:30 or 8 in the morning. Or perhaps earlier or perhaps a little bit later but you want to stabilize that because your circadian rhythms operate more fluidly and your mood is likely to be regulated better if there's islands of stability in your daily routines. Human beings like daily routines just like dogs like daily routines, and so, regulate your sleep. I would say when you get up in the morning, eat breakfast. That's a really important thing to do. I can't tell you how many people I've treated in my clinical practice whose proclivity for emotional instability and depression, anxiety, general hopelessness, emotional pain and gloom and doom, as well as capacity to concentrate, were properly regulated or inhibited or reduced by merely ensuring that they ate a-I would say-a protein and fat rich breakfast, relatively soon after they wake up, and that's especially true if they're stressed. And, as it turns out, that if you stress yourself after a fast, which is of course what you've undertaken if you haven't eaten since the night before, that your body produces enough insulin to deplete the sugar in your blood, and then it's very difficult for you to become regulated properly with regards to your metabolism until you sleep again. And so, regulating your sleep and your breakfast eating habits, in particular, can be a very effective way of regulating your mood and increasing your capacity to concentrate. The other thing I would say is that spending some time scheduling your time is also extraordinarily useful. And so I can tell you a little bit about how to use schedules effectively. So, the first thing I would say is that you should develop a long term plan. You have to set up your vision, like Geppetto when he's looking at the star before Pinocchio's transformation takes place. You have to set up your long term vision-to have some vision of the good towards which you're working, and some vision, perhaps, of the hell that you're avoiding. And then I would say once you set up that vision so that you know how to orient yourself, then you should start designing your days and you can do that very effectively with a calendar like Google Calendar. Many people say well I-I hate using a schedule. Or-I hate using a calendar. And what I would say about that is-is that if you hate using a schedule or a calendar, then you’re probably using it wrong. What you’re doing is using the calendar as an external tyrant...

    Cool video, here's my *summary:* • Regulate/stabilize your habits to regulate your concentration ability ○ Get up at approx. the same time each morning (similar to other people) ○ Eat a protein & fat rich breakfast soon after waking up ○ Schedule your time systematically 1. Start with a vision (positive & negative) 2. Break it down into habits 3. Design your days: Block time in your calendar for those habits □ Tip: see the calender as a friend, not as an external tyrant ○ Train yourself with micro habits - Incremental improvement pays off like compound interest □ Direction is more important than the starting point or current position - The respective habit needs to be aligned with your concentration goals □ e. g. if you want to be able to read w/o being distracted, try reading 10 (-> 12 -> …) minutes/day without being distracted □ Goal should be challenging enough for growth, but not so hard you're sure to fail

    It’s 1am here in Australia, and I can’t sleep, so I’m listening to Jordon again, as I’m a big fan. What he said about using a calendar, in a way, that is not as a tyrant, was brilliant, I thought. For me, this is what I needed, from a personal prospective, as I’ve never heard it put this way before, thank you Jordan.

    i've had adhd my entire life, and i've learned a few tricks that have helped me. specifically with his reading example, i'd say start by reading aloud, and if that doesn't work, perform it. really--act it out. it can be to an imaginary audience or a real someone with a lot of patience (lol) but when you're engaging with more than just words, i've found it to be incredibly helpful to reach a level of stimulation that really dials you in. i'm also an actor so i'm not sure if this will work for everyone, particularly individuals who struggle with performance anxiety, but it might be worth a shot if you're challenged by this. good luck yall 🙌

    Wanna increase your focus during your studies? Here are some things that you can do: 1. Turn off your phone at the time of studying. 2. Make sure to work in a quiet environment. 3. Don't watch these types of videos when you sit down to study. instead, watch them in your free time. 4. Take notes. 5. Hold yourself accountable.

    Time management. The smallest and most powerful stepping stone to success. Some people don't see it, therefore they unknowingly overlook it. Others see it as so small that they doubt how effective it is because they want immediate results. Until I watched this video, I've never realised just how much CONCENTRATION AND FOCUS needs DILIGENCE AND PERSEVERANCE. Stay on your grind.

    This is the best advice i have ever came across with, thanks JP you're a true intellectual 1. regulate your habits( wake up at approximately the same hour every day) 2. don't skip breakfast( have it with protein and fats) 3. schedule your day in a manner that you would like to have develop long term goals of positive and negative(one that you want to avoid) adapt smaller responsibilities which are part of a bigger goal 4. define concentration( know the constituents of concentration) and train yourself with smaller habits incrementally don't forget that the trajectory on which you're on is more important than the starting point

    “…trajectory is more important than the starting point…” A very useful tip. I get from this that once momentum (in the right direction) is acquired on toward your goal, the starting point is not that much important but as a marker that reflect whether one made progress. By extension, there would be successive starting points like roadside markers along the way. Neat.

  • @QuestionEverything562

    @QuestionEverything562

    2 жыл бұрын

    Exactly, as most storytellers will tell you, it's not about the beginning or the end, it's about the journey. Positive Momentum is a great feeling, like you said, roadside markers. You're driving and see a sign that says 80 Km, then you keep driving, now it's 60 Km, then you keep driving, then it's just 20 Km. That's a good feeling, and you don't want to let your foot off the pedal because you see the progress. Your momentum builds incrementally, but it also builds a blueprint in your head on how to progress in certain tasks or build consistent stabilization of activities down the road. In other words, you build progressive habits.

So like the dragon one for some reason my brain has always assumed a little dragon was in the background of the sky. For this one there could be an open book way in the background behind Jordan etc. Hope it gives you some ideas! If not they look great anyway

    Wow. Not one mention of meditation. Goes to show how being a rebel always makes you lose sight off what works. I have STPD. Chronic problems with attention. Before I started meditating two hours a day. Now all the rest follows. As i am now in control of my thoughts. I notice them instead of being them. Incredible .

    Deep concentration allowed me to formulate an effective argument against the fact that I have many voices in my head. Not an inference, an identifiable conclusion - there is but one voice, with multiple personalities. We're hoping the verdict sends a clear message - the jury's still out.
