The only reason the 25yr limit was even discussed was in reference to the preR34 GTR that wouldn’t pass most state safety regulations but could be registered as an ‘antique’. If the car can pass all safety and smog regulations ANY car can be imported. The R34 was just the car that made the rule relevant when those damn movies came out

False. Bill gates tried to import a Porsche 959 in the 1980’s but it took 13 years bc Porsche refused to “donate” 4 of them to be crashed. A car can’t pass safety standards if it was not crash tested in the USA.

If a car is sold in the US as a US spec, you can import that same model from another country. That’s why there’s right hand drive Mk4 Suras and NSXs in the USA before they’re 25 years old. Because they were crash tested, emissions tested and sold in the US. That’s what he means.

As far as under 25 years to be legal a civic type r isn't legal until now. This guy could have had his car crushed with no legal recourse because of the engine. It was never offered in that specific car in that configuration. You could get a single cam civic that's Japanese because it's also sold in the USA that way. Only a car guy cop would know the type r engine is not the same as the 2000 si b16. But that would have absolutely gotten his car impounded and crushed if stopped by a cop who actually knew the laws and that cars details

@@Hondaguru1122 Any vehicle that wasn't imported properly, is subject to be crushed. There's very limited ways to import these cars, next to none. One of which is a temporary import, and it needs to be shipped our in a year I believe, or it will be seized and crushed, or it's needs to be a show car, of which is very strict. 99.99999% of cars wouldn't qualify. There to my knowledge isn't any registered importers for this car, not anymore, and alot of people are buying these cars that are technically illegal, because they will just pull them from Canada because it's easier to import them there, and they rely on the state registration to be lax. Just because your state allows you to register it, doesn't mean it's legal to do so. You could potentially get by a few years if your lucky, but your car getting crushed is always possible, and it has happened. You can't just have something illegal, and keep it. guys, the reason cars are illegal in the states is due to safety guidelines. every country has different guidelines so some manufactures wont adapt the car to some countries. The reason the 2017 was able to be imported was because it did pass the safety regulations put in place.

My aunt was stationed in Germany and bought a car. After a few years she got sent to Colorado. When she went export the car to the US they required her to change the brakes, windshield, windows, backglass and something else. The cost was gonna be outrageous when added to the shipping cost so she sold it back to the dealership for like $1,000 more than she owed. This was back in the late 80s or early 90s. I would hate to see what it would cost to do all of that today.

It is illegal to have here in some states because some cars are not smog legal and will not pass emissions so they are not legal to own because they cannot be registered. There's loopholes people use to have them registered in other states but that's a lot of extra steps that doesn't guarantee you won't be harassed for owning it.

You could’ve imported the Skyline as a kit car or a race car but neither could be driven on the road. Also once it was registered that way you couldn’t re-register it as a regular car. I tried my best to bring my R33 GTR back from Japan. I talked extensively with the DOT and EPA to see what could be done. This was in 2001 though and that car cost me around 10K USD.

You can thank US Mercedes-Benz (dealerships, not Mercedes as a company) for the US import laws. In the 1970's and 1980's, German luxury cars were starting to get very popular in the US, and because of high dealer markups on Mercedes, many Americans would just import brand new cars straight from Germany themselves and pay a lot less even when you factor in shipping and making them US road compliant. US Mercedes dealerships lobbied hard for this import ban.

What he’s talking about is the “significantly similar” or “substantially similar” (I don’t remember which one, don’t hate me) clause in US import laws. Typically only applies to vehicles sold in Canada and Mexico, however can be used as a basis in which to import a newer than 25 year old vehicle from another country. The law states that in order to be eligible to import it must bear permanent marking (from the manufacturer) that state that the vehicle complied with NHTSA regulations. If it doesn’t then it isn’t legal for import until it’s 25 years old or older. Which raises the question; why bother? Sure, it would be cool having a RHD car in the US, but you’re looking at paying whatever the sticker price is, the import duty fees which can be around 2.4% for motorcycles, 2.5% for cars, or 25% for trucks. Plus if it’s coming from Japan then it’ll have to come from a used car dealer unless you can get a Japanese citizen to buy the car on your behalf (seen it plenty of times. I’ve even seen guys “borrow” their friends Japanese wife/husband to buy a new car) and then ship it, which costs a couple grand by itself.

The 25 year law for imports is because the car would be considered an "Antique" where under those stipulations the car registered would be under STRICT rules as to when it can be driven on the road legally. Importing a vehicle with a 10 digit vin into America is still NOT legal unless you have ways to manipulate the registration.
