Don's positive persona is such an antidote to the overwhelming snark and meanness that overwhelm most of KZread.

So as it usually turns out trying to tighten up an old worn machine often leads to more problems than it fixes..................... If only rebuilds were cheap and easy!

Yes just watched both video's , great and you don't need to do technical video's every time, sometimes it just nice to see the process, the time's in the past I've striped a machine down and I've thought that was an easy fix put back together , then found I've had to strip it back down and do a proper job and instead of it being down a hour or two, it's down a month! Waiting on parts to arrive or to make parts between other jobs. lol. Stay safe with what's going on at the moment. Thanks for sharing.

The carriage rack on my cheapo lathe was mounted on the side below the ways. It has elongated screw holes for adjusting the depth of engagement with the carriage. The benefit there is that if there was wear in one spot I could loosen the screws on either side a wedge it closer (it is a rather bendable bar) then tighten the screws. Some say it's magic, but we know better. ;-)

One of the lathe manuals I read said to place a sheet of paper between the gears when setting the change gears. Can't remember think it said brown paper sack.

Don't use a page from your lathe manual though. You might need it later. :-)

CAN YOU EXPLAIN AGAIN WHAT CAN BE DONE IF THE RACK IS WORN MORE IN THE MIDDLE THAN ON THE ENDS? IS THERE A FIX OTHER THAN REPLACEMENT?

We are going to take a look at that in our next video. It’s possible to turn the rack gear around but I don’t know for sure until we take it apart. And by the way I’m not sure the rack gear is worn.

Too bad the fix wasn't as easy as hoped; considering how much $ that grinder has made for Sub Tool over the years, it is certainly worth the time and money to fix it correctly.
