How to identify a person in cardiac arrest and administer potentially lifesaving CPR

Buffalo Bills safety Damar Hamlin went into cardiac arrest during Monday night's game after a tackle. The immediate aid he received on the field saved his life and also raised awareness about what to do if you see someone in distress. CBS News' Errol Barnett and Lana Zak are joined by Mike Smith, CPR trainer for the American Heart Association, for a demonstration.

I performed CPR three times when I was a cop. One of the victims survived. Everyone should know how to keep a loved one alive.

The CPR instructor did not mention checking for pulse while checking for breathing. Also he did not instruct to perform 30 compressions and the 2 breaths. The 30-2 should be maintained until an AED or EMTs comes. Surprising that he neglected 2 very important parts of CPR.

@@joiningmarmot3812 that's the dilemma when faced with the opportunity to intervene: do you immediately act to potentially save a life, or do you pause to weigh the potential consequences and aftermath? For instance, imagine you're dining at a restaurant and someone begins choking on a tomato. You instinctively perform the Heimlich maneuver, potentially saving their life. However, this act could open you up to legal action if you're unaware of any non-disclosure agreements (NDAs) or underlying health conditions, or if your touch is deemed inappropriate. It's a stark reminder that we can't always predict the complexities of those around us. Thus, each of us may default to a different stance: prioritize preserving life or minimize personal risk. Consider this: in the USA, you can face lawsuits for just about anything, but winning isn't a sure bet for the plaintiff. Nevertheless, they'll happily waste your time and energy, all while lamenting about their quality of life

It's great to promote acute cardiac care. Well done. You may also want to learn the Heimlich Maneuver to help a fellow human. The Heimlich Maneuver is used to aid choking victims. In a pinch, you can even self administer the Maneuver. Be safe people. Please be thoughtful. Thank you.

You need to check carotid pulse and check for breathing. If no pulse or breathing, then begin compressions - 30/2 compressions to breaths. If there is a pulse but no breathing, then begin rescue breathing- 1 breath every 2 to 3 seconds for 2 minutes. Then check for pulse and breathing again. I hope this helps.
