I found a pretty big "rock" in a river in Quebec that is dark green and black, has a metallic sheen, feels greasy, is slightly magnetic, has many rounded edges that clearly used to be sharp. 7 inches across, 4 inches wide and very heavy. I cut a mini piece off the end with a grinder yesterday and it is all grey metal inside with one shinier silvery inclusion that I saw in my jewelers lens. It is not rock!?! Almost a slippery sheen, like I cut a piece of new steel but there is no rust on the rock anywhere. Can I post /send a pic ? Cheers

I found one while at property in west Virginia. It is a rusty color that is heavy but I don't think it is magnetic. It looks identical to pics I have seen of bigger ones. I thought it was iron ore as it is heavy for a golf ball size rock.

I'm green as heck but I did read that Meteorites aren't actually "magnetic" (are not magnets) but magnets are attracted to them. That is probably what you had meant ?

Interesting! A few months ago I saw a shooting star that came in at a very low angle, as it streaked through the sky, it burned in different colours of the rainbow, making me wonder if it was a meteor or a man-made piece of a satellite? It was the most beautiful sight while it was burning.

If it was fast and colorful, it was probably a meteor. Satellites and rocket debris are typically orange like a fire and move much slower.

If you are using a magnet to identify meteorites, you will want to use a strong magnet. Little cheap magnets will not do the job.
