back many years ago, the engine number was all important,, it was a big rigamarow to change an engine because they used that to identify a car , they didn't really have body numbers back then, . my dad was a mechanic and he had a set of stamps and would change the numbers to match what was in the car, not really legal but that was done often way back then.

Them I have a number in the rear on the left side..And it is. 3970010.. The head casting numbers are.. 3986388.. I would be great if I could find out what engine this is... But I do know that it's a chevy... Some of the numbers are saying that it's a chevy 302 from 69. And some are saying it's a chevy 350..? My question is could you help me understand this more.. The guy that I got it from said it was in his 69' camaro z28.. But would be nice to know if I'm sitting a DZ 302.. Thank you... Please help me.

My numbers on front of block are ‘F04I6M’ nothing I can find is even close, but the second digit could be a zero, or could be an O (letter), also the ‘6’ might be a lower case ‘b’. But no where I have looked is there only 6 digits. I was told this engine was a 283, and it’s in a ‘63 c-30, but don’t know that it’s original engine. I doubt I'll ever need that information, but it is interesting to know about it. Thanks for sharing it, Lloyd. I do have a question, however. In 1965 some or all Studebakers had Chevy engines. The 1962 GT Hawk must have originally had the Studebaker 289 c.i. V8. Am I thinking rightly about that? I ordered an Avanti (that I never took delivery of because production stopped) with a Paxton supercharger and only after I had placed my order did they tell me that it would have a Chevy 289 engine. I didn't care, really, but I was surprised at that time.
