    First thank you for watching and commenting. I really need to make a new video. This was for 1 sub who asked a question. My autostick is a love hate relationship. I've been involved in vitage VWs since 91. I only have driven the manual. Then I bought my autostick from the original owner. I never have been able to feel 100 percent comfortable owning this type of beetle. It has never felt natural to me. The low and high gears. I think VW did a great job on this idea. Did you know it was designed with women in mind? The idea was make it appealing and less intimidating. Unfortunately most have been converted back to manual. By production numbers it's kinda rare. It just never caught on. I still own my 68. Almost 20 years later. I don't think I personally have driven it 50 miles. As far reverse it's press down then it slides to the drivers side. This was also a issue on these. Parts are not to easy to find for the transmission. I do have a few suppliers that still carry parts like seals and others parts. Let me know if you ever can't find parts. I have a few sources. There is also a autostick Facebook group as well. Take care, stay safe. Enjoy the beetle. I have a Facebook page as well. Lots of fellow KZread's inn the group as well. Check it out. It's called Volkswagenplanet. Hope to see you there as well. My goal is to get back in the garage and get " Benny " back on the road. Tribute to my late stepfather. He and my daughter had lots if memories when she was a young child in that car.

The few women I have met who have driven it said it was the great. Thanks for commenting and commenting. I wish I had been born a decade earlier to enjoy more of the true VW scene. And when that vacuum element went bad, it was impossible to get it out of neutral into any gear.

    Nothing weird about it. Maybe cause my 1st VW was an 68 Autostick. Once you get that reverse is "push down (to the floor), then up and to the left, the rest is just like you were driving a standard from 2nd thru 4th - no problem. The plus with the Autostick: the transmission was set up with different gear ratios, so you could drive around town in Low all day. 2 was for the freeway. But it didn't jerk you around like 1st gear would be doing on a standard. My Autostick was VERY zippy, but probably because I had an excellent VW mechanic who also built drag race buggies. lol. As he 1st described it to me, due to the different gear ratios + specific tire sizes (and surely whatever better engine he thru into it), he said it was "dialed in". And yes, I was a speed demon in it.

    The Autostick was an option on the beetle and Karmann Ghia from 1968-1975 and the cars were shipped from Germany with the option installed uses a torque converter that has an atf tank under the right fender and is fed by a special 2 part oil pump driven by the engine's oil pump. and a vacuum system with a solenoid control valve hooked to the intake manifold below the carb, a vacuum tank under the left rear fender, and to the clutch servo on the transmission and a warning light in the speedometer if the atf temp is exceeded. as the 1968 autostick was the first to have an IRS with double jointed rear axles while the 1968 manual models still had the early swingaxle rear suspension as bugs 1969 on on the manual models had an irs rear suspension while all mexican bugs up to 2003 had a swingaxle rear suspension. The autostick parts are no longer available means the only way is to convert it to a 4 speed as cars 1968-1970 have no clutch guide tube which must be put in by opening up the frame tunnel, the engine oil pump needs changed, the driveplate changed to a flywheel, the 12v gear the clutch componets, the autostick starter can be used, the intake manifold connection needs capped off, a 1969-1972 or 1973-1979 irs 4 speed transmission, the neutral safety switch wires need bypassed and the shift rod and shifter need changed and the control valve and tanks removed then its converted to a 4 speed. the flex plates are nitorious for breaking on these.

    Sounds like you really don’t know how to drive a VW with Autostick. You start the car in neutral, release the parking brake, and if you’re planning on moving forward, put it in 1st. Step on the gas and go. You leave it in 1st until you go about 35mph or so, take your foot off the gas, pull the shifter into 2nd and step on the gas again. Get on the freeway or what ever at higher speeds. R is simply for backing up, and L is for climbing steep grades to keep your engine fan speed faster as to not overheat the engine when straining it going up a steep grade. If you choose, drive in 2nd all the time. It’ll just take off slower and take longer to reach city speeds, kind of like GM’s old Powerglide in the 50s and early 60s. It’s not complicated!

    Fun fact: Possibly in response to VW's promotion of the Autostick, Chevrolet made the "Torque Drive" available on the Nova, Camaro and eventually, Vega, starting in mid-1968 and running through the 1971 model year. It was just a 2 speed Powerglide transmission with the controls for automatic shifts removed, so you had to shift from L to H and back manually but didn't have to work a clutch and it sold for about $50 less than the fully automatic version. That made it similar to the Powerglide and Dynaflow transmissions from the late 1940s and early 1950s. They only sold about 15,000 of these over 3.5 years, so the option was dropped.

You have to be advised that you cant build a bigger engine. There are a few major differences in the engines internally. If you need parts, i would suggest The Samba. They seem to have used parts most of the time. Besides the engine and trans the rest of the car is the exact same. There is a few different sheet metal pieces in the engine compartment. I wish I could find a Beetle with auto shift, either a sunroof model or convertible, in reasonable condition. I would buy it in a heartbeat. One thing though: I viewed two YT vids which teach one how to drive a regular stick shift. Both vids made manual shifting quite complicated from what I saw. A pity! I think I could master a manual with time, patience and rhythm, if you know what I mean. It's just perfecting that rhythm of going at it with clutch and gear shift until it becomes second nature, without thinking about it. I was told once that driving a manual Bug is VERY essy to learn and drive with. Is that true, readers? What's your spin on this theory? Please inform. Thanks.🤔 ♐

  • @Volkswagenplanet

    @Volkswagenplanet

    Жыл бұрын

    You are correct about driving a manual shift. I've been driving VWs since the 90s. I can shift without using the clutch. Its rhythm like you mentioned. My issue is this about the autostick. I don't want to confuse you. With a manual you have 1-4 gears. You start 1st gear( top and drivers side, location). Then shift straight down to second. Then up to the middle over to the passenger side ( 3rd gear). Then straight down to 4th gear. This is standard around the world. Now the autostick. The normal position 1 st gear on a manual is what is a gear you can stay in around town driving without shifting. I think it goes up to 35 mph. The 2nd gear on a manual is called low on a autostick. Then you rev the car like normal to pick up speed. Then you let off the gas to lower the rpm then you shift to 3rd gear location on a manual. On a autostick it's called high gear. Now on a autostick there is no clutch pedal to press in to change gears. Its not difficult. It just doesn't feel comfortable like you mentioned. It almost feels like your missing something. VW created the autostick back in the day to appeal to women drivers. They had a hard time driving manuals. Automatic transmissions cost a lot more to build. The autostick is close in size as the manual transmission. It was a win, win for VW. Here in the states it never really caught on. VW really didnt keep statistics like the other manufacturers did. It is believed that 1 out of every 18- 20 cars built after 67 were autostick. Over the years the transmissions and engines were swapped back to manuals. The engine is different as well. Just wasn't capable of building bigger engines as well. Parts are getting harder and harder to find for the autostick transmissions as well. Even the aftermarket is scarce. Most of the time you have to buy used parts. It comes to a point where you just move on. Even though there are less built. They are worth less in value. I have a 68 autostick. I bought it from the original owner in 2003. I don't think I put 200 miles on it since I bought it. Spent thousands on parts. Its been in my garage since torn apart from a restoration job I never finished. If it wasn't for the sentimental value, the car would of been gone years ago. Hope this info helps. If you know what to look for you would be surprised how many you can find changed over for sale. It's not to difficult to change them back either. Thank you for watching and commenting. Stay safe.

    You have to remember the autostick was a 1500 cc. engine at least 68 and 69 that I know about. That being said can it get to 75mph , yes. That would be around its top speed. It would be turning alot of rpm. The second part of your question I don't know of any tech articles or anybody who has done this type of upgrade. I'm sure a transmission shop could change the gear ratio. Unfortunately the autostick was not loved by many. There were not alot produced either as compared to the manual. That being said alot were converted to manuals. The next question would have you ever driven a autostick? If not, they are the same as a manual , but when you rev the engine up.to shift gears there is no clutch. This transmission I believe is a 3 speed compared to a 4 in the manual. The autostick was great for downtown type driving. You could stay in low gear til about 35. Hope this answered your question. Thank you for watching and commenting. I hope to.have a series on the autostick soon. Stay safe

    The only way I can see this being a problem is if one had access to both an Autostick and a manual version of the car and had to adjust to the different shift patterns. The most important other disadvantage would be any sacrifice in acceleration involved. If the torque converter makes up for the lack of 4 speeds, I don't see much of a downside. And what about L? Is that just for jackrabbit starts and for when you need a lot of engine braking? I could live with either in most conditions, but on really icy surfaces with the car in danger of sliding to one side or the other, having to use a clutch can be dangerous.

    During the years that the autostick was available(68-76 for Beetles and Super Beetles and 68-73 for Karmann Ghia's) about 10% of U.S.A. sales were autostick. Now, only about 3% percent exist. It seems that the autostick became even less popular as time went on. Less than 1% of Super Beetles are currently autostick. The rumor that autosticks are worth less than standards can be seen to be false here: www.thesamba.com/vw/classifieds/search.php?submit=yes&keywords=autostick&type=both&stype=all&username=&yearfrom=1968&yearto=1976&pricefrom=&priceto=&model%5B%5D=§ion%5B%5D=3§ion%5B%5D=13&wanted=show&zip=&zipdist=0&state%5B%5D=&usaregion=&country=&sort=date&sort_order=DESC&submitButton=Search In the past year, I have only seen two VW autosticks for sale. Just kidding about the WTF 70s comment. I don't know if you have driven one of these. Your feet and shift points dont feel normal. I'm hoping to get the autostick put back togther as early as this month. I will make move in car videos. I bought this car in 2003. The first 2 years I owned it I put 11 miles on hit. I hated this car. My stepfather grabved the keys one day and taught himself how to drive this car. He would take my daughter for rides on a daily after daycare. My stepfather passed away fathers day weekend the same year. I took the car to a known local bodyshop. The car sat over a year no work done at all to it. Lost about 2 grand. Had it towed to another shop same thing. This time the billed me for parts they could not produce. That was 2500 lost. Now 16 years later im about to tackle it myself. Motor is already. I've lost and orderd the parts a few times over the years. I was on my way to the garage to start getting organized to start putting it back togther. I hope this helps with understanding about the autostick. I would say I could answer any additional questions you may have if any.
