How to Hold Side Control Concepts (Hips, Shoulders, Neck)

Спорт

There are some fairly simple concepts that you can use to effectively hold Side Control. While I don't share all of them. I at least touch on some of the basics in this video.
Starting at the hips and moving up to the shoulders and neck.
In side control you need to have something connected or controlling the hips. Whether that's a regular side control, 100 kilos, kesa gatame, reverse kesa gatame. It all has something that is controlling the hips.
Moving up to the idea of shoulders for side control. If you control the shoulders. You force the back to stay flat. If the person is flat on their back, it will be very difficult to escape. Most escapes from side control in Brazilian Jiu-jitsu involve coming up to the side to imitate the escape.
The last side control concept I share in this video is that of the neck. By controlling the persons face and neck. They are locked in place. If the person is facing away from you and is unable to turn towards you. They will not be able to get their escapes going effectively. At least not by turning towards you.
So if you're looking for some ideas for side control in BJJ. Watch the video and hopefully some of the concepts listed in this video will be helpful to you.

I agree. I had an AHH HAAAA moment this week. This video confirms it, as do many others. I'm trying to memorize positions, escapes, submissions... but that didn't work. Then some seasoned blue belt said "be heavy, so heavy I can't move. Place your hand here, so I can't move. Put your knee there, so I can't move. Remove a post and raise my hips and I'll fall" fuuuccckkk me, ahh haaaa. Lol. Same thing the black belt said, but I just never really heard him.

Yes! I spent longer than I'm willing to admit thinking that I could submit people from inside their guard... 😔 I think a basic overview of each of the positions should be the first thing a new student should learn.

Chew, your video was like having a class on the old days. These are great details that I use to have conversations about with my old school colleagues back in time in Brazil. Some of them usually are not shared, even in seminars. You just revealed the golden tips that works for skinny and big guys. Congrats!

Chewie, the gentleman you're rolling with at 2:04 reminds me SO much of one of my training buddies. I'm a 45-year-old 4-stripe white belt (been training for 2 years now); this buddy of mine is 24 and has been training for 7 months, and seems to be a bit of a prodigy, just because his hips naturally move like the guy you're rolling with. In fact, he's giving some of our newer blue belts FITS because his hip mobility is just spectacular. I looked up this video specifically to figure out how to tighten up my hip control. Thank you SO much for these concepts, and keep up the great work!

  • @walkingcorpse1224

Lol I'm usually able to get out of side control and hold side control pretty easily against alot of opponents in my city, except for the black belts... My black belt instructor alone, I feel like his side mount is impossible to escape no matter what I do, and then I feel like I can never hold him in Side Control. No lie, everytime I go up against a Black Belt (Unless they're really small) I feel like I will never get to their level. 🤣 It's so weird to me, it's like that frkn belt is magic.

Should you do all of these (i.e. block the hip, block the shoulder and block the head) or will any one do? At around 2:48, when Chewie has all his weight and attention around Chad's shoulder and chest, he isn't doing anything to block Chad's hip from turning towards him. Is that unnecessary in that case? If not, how do you block your opponent's hip when you are trying to be tight and heavy around their chest/shoulder?

Hi Chew, Could you do video about back control? Many times I have one hook in and seatbelt or two hooks in I slip over opponent's head. It seems like I m to high and I do not feel like im having any control. It is really frustrating cuze it is one of the most dominating position but maan I prefer to stay in side control than take someone's back. Greetings from Poland !
