Fundamental baseball wins games. Thanks for the video. These videos help me as a coach as I understand the game but don’t necessarily know the finer points of every position.

Life time first baseman here and I just wanna bring up some more things that I see people do 1. Don’t Reach for the ball on a pick off- if the pitcher gives you a good throw let the ball travel to you. 2. When throwing the ball back to the pitcher keep a eye on the runner and see if he knows where the ball is so next time you can catch him sleeping on the base. 3 when holding a runner on and the pitcher doesn’t have a accurate pickoff move it’s best to open up your stands towards the pitcher so you can keep the ball From passing you and giving the runner a free base. And lastly be vocal you gotta talk to your team ya know let your second baseman know that your gonna be covering less ground and talk to the runner because a lot of the time they will give you info that they shouldn’t like “ yea I’ve been struggling with curveballs all year” or “ yea our pitcher is good but he only can throw 50 pitches or his arm will give out” info like that is nice to know cuz then you can sit first pitch and get him out of the game faster. That’s all thank you 🙏

Great video. I don't know why this has been so hard for coaches to explain or demonstrate for the scenario on how to quickly get back to the base whne the catcher throws back to first after the pitch. So much easier to shuffle back instead of running back.

Yea I pitched and played firstbase from little league to highschool and at age 13 I started to play travel baseball and played for coaches that played pro or college. But I live in Georgia and I use to follow the Braves and I still do but the Braves had a firstbase man by the nane of Sid Bream. Now he was a lefty as well and I really liked the way he played firstbase and they way he would play when he was holding a runner on firstbase. He would kind of have both feet on the bad but he would be facing the pitcher but when the pitcher threw to firstbase. He would slap that glove down to tag the runner but when the pitcher throws the ball to the plate he would shuffle off of firstbase. I see some firstbase man these days will play close to the bag but when holding the runner on but when a ball is thrown to firstbase they are a moving target. Well as a former pitcher like myself I just want the firstbase man to be stationary so when I throw to firstbase he is on the bag and not a moving target. Because you see I threw lefthanded and most lefties have pretty good pick off moves when throeing to firstbase. So I didn't want my firstbase man to be a moving target when we have the baserunner picked off

Matt, can you address what you teach your teams when the first baseman holds the runner by straddling the bag? In this situation, I always tell my runners to go back into the bag standing up to cut off the first baseman's ability to catch a throw around the runner.

Me parece la mejor manera de cuidar al corredor en primera base. He visto otros videos de entrenadores y hacen cosas distintas que no me parecen correctas. La forma en que lo haces es la que mi padre me enseñó desde pequeño. Saludos.

When there are runners on 2nd and 1st, do you hold the runner on 1st? If not, where do you position yourself, behind or in front of the runner?

The team I coach definitely holds the runner on first in this situation. If not the runner gets a huge lead and can break up a double play effortlessly.

Hi John, I have been coaching baseball for over forty years and here’s what I’ve experienced. This is one of those rules that is often disregarded by umpires unless another coach complains. I have known some really controlling umpires and they don’t call it. I’m not saying they never have, just that I’ve never seen it called by an umpire. I have seen a coach point it out and then it enforced though. That being said, when I teach I always teach my infielders how to do this properly and legally, according to rule, as well as explaining the rules and those that disregard it.

As an umpire I always called interference whenever a first basemen straddled the bag. It always made it harder to get the runner as their back foot would always get in the way of the runner to get back
