I wished there were more guides for getting hired as a illustrator for books. How do you get hooked with an editorial or author?

I’m action for a book let me know

I wrote a 2 page children’s story that I wanted illustrated. I went to the local college and spoke to the prof and he recommended 3 students. Two didn’t think they were ready. The third wanted $15,000 to illustrate my book. I told him that was ridiculous. He said my book was nothing without his illustrations; I told he had nothing to illustrate without my book, and walked away.

That guy was an idiot. Lmao. 15k is so absurd. 3 to 5k was already pushing it cuz you can hire cheaper illustrators. Talk about an inflated ego to ask for that much.

My question is: How should we write a contract for us and the illustrator? Does their name have to appear on our book as the illustrator? Or can we choose to not include their name? Do they also get paid royalties from our book, or do we get to keep all royalties that our book makes?

Thanks for this post! When you hire an illustrator and you pay for their work, is that the end to the financial bond or when I self publish and sell the book are they entitled to a royalty? I would love any feedback thank you ✨
