just a fyi for you younger guitar enthusiast, dont ever stop playing. I could play like Ross when I was in my late 20s but for some stupid reason I quit. Great advice sir, but i can’t take it. You still can learn at 60s. Les Paul and BB King still kick ass at the age of 90s. Never late to learn.

Same, but only half agree... try to find the right tips to correct bad habits. It's a lot harder to correct imprinted mistakes, but it's not impossible. Especially with the correct direction. Can be tough to sift through all the YT tutorials to find the right ones, heck I just saw a vid that took the simple theory of chords and managed to complicate into a 20 min that would do nothing to teach anyone anything. But if you're here, you're in the right place.

Ross had a video on why he doesn’t prefer three note-per-string scales. I had just spent a bunch of time learning them and perfecting them. But when he described why he doesn’t like them I realized I fell exactly into the category of player that he described and was caught in the trap of not truly understanding why I was playing what I was playing. I immediately bought his class on Udemy. It was worth every penny and I would highly recommend it to anyone.

Ross, I have trouble improvising on combining minor and major blues along with mixolydian mode. Maybe you can show us how to improvise over one chord especially Dom11 chord like it's in every smooth jazz song ( I mean I heard it a lot in every Lee Ritenour', Larry Carlton', Frank Gambale ' or Steve Luke's song).

It's so easy to learn guitar when you have content like that available for free.

Hey Ross . When I learned to play by ear the first time (lol) it was the modes and the seven chords as you described . The second time my teacher was a jazz man so the chords changed to only the V as dominant and the seven was a -b5. But he was a jazz guy, the first guy was basically a modes guy so I know both. Only problem is the first guy didn't know how to improvise and the second never taught the shapes for the the four chords: major, minor, dominant and the -b5. I figured out all of them but I would like to see how you would play a dominant chord and a -b5 chord on the 6th and 5th strings, just so I can make sure I'm playing them right. I can improvise with them no problem but just what to make sure I'm playing the chord shapes right when I play. Thanks so much, love ur and am a new subscriber.

With inversions Ross, the only important thing is what note is the lowest; the order of the other notes doesn't matter. A first inversion C with the third (E) as the lowest note can be (from low to high) ECG or EGC.

The question Ive been trying to answer for a while is - When improvising over a progression with chords that are all in the key’s pentatonic scale, how do you know which notes to avoid during a chord change and which new notes to include? I’m basically picturing a separate (but similar) scale that’s slightly changed from the key’s pentatonic scale in order to emphasize the new chord’s root (or 3rd, or 5th, I guess). Is this the correct way of thinking about it? I’m at the stage where I can solo in the main key, but don’t venture outside of that one scale.

Thanks for sharing. What would be the ultimate goal regarding learing the triads for improv? to know where they are for the respective chord on the spot? My prob is that i follow the scale and go by ear, which i believe somehow i ended up landing on any note of the triad but not by knowing, just because it sounds melodic to me. Playing over a backing track that you never heard before is also tricky in order to identify each chord and the respective triads. anyways, it all should com "automatic" sometime? cheers mate!

ROSS CAMPBELL, certain players use arpeggio substitutions which is superimposing arpeggios over the rhythm chord to create a more complex colored chord. I have notice that jerry garcia, jimmy page, larry carlton, Chris Duarte etc will use arpeggio substitutions with their blues licks or scale licks. try making a video lesson about arpeggio substitutions

Interested in your course. I would class myself as an intermediate guitarist. Meaning I know enough chords to write a tune (not all of them obviously), I can play lead guitar and am familiar with all 5 positions of the pentatonic scale and know more than a little about music theory. I find your posts very useful, but what I'm most interesting in being able increase speed. when required that is, I am not a thrash metal dude (it's cool if other people are, it's just not my bag). Also applying modes in lead breaks. I''ve seen loads of posts and read up about modes and how they change when you start on different position of the major scale, e.g. 1,2,3,4,5,6 and 7 etc. Does your course cover this?

I am an advance player brushing up on Theory and I bought his bulletproof series ,both of the videos and they are really good. Ross is a very good teacher.
