thank you for the video. I've been visually impaired all my life. However, I shared this with my aunt and my godmother, so they can understand how to communicate with me a lot better or understand other people that have visual impairments. I just had to end a friendship with someone that was autistic because they were more ashamed of my visual impairment than they were helpful in certain situations that I needed them and helpful. I ended it after they violated my medical privacy and read it and showed my medical information to their friend for which scolded them about doing so and their response was well. She can't read it anyway referring to me so I want having to in my friendship with them after 22 years, it is difficult sometimes to be able to be in a world where you have body people who just don't understand the different degrees of site loss and that we just want to be treated normally like them instead of like second-class citizens. Thank you for the video.

Oh my, that sounded like a terible experience and unfortunately, not uncommon. Good for you for sticking to your bounderies and helping to educate loved ones in your life. It is so difficult for sighted individuals to understand the concept of sight loss being a spectrum so we have to step up our communication to keep understanding and expectations clear.

Awesome video!! My sister lives with me (we both have Stargardt disease) and we both have different preferences with our lighting. I need lots of light and she likes low light. Your point on open communication is awesome because we all operate a little differently. :D

@@SeeingBlind yeah totally, creating the work is part of making the work better. i think it is important to teach people the skills to handle these social situations on both sides. on the side of the person who is identified as having the disability, and the quote unquote helper

Bless your heart, sending love and positive thoughts your way! It does feel like we are very much alone at times when no one understands or believes our struggles. If there are any questions or struggles you would like me to post on, let me know. You were not the only one who could benefit from that continent.

yep I relate to the point you made about independence. My mom was always impatient and would take tasks away from me, no matter how much time she'd spent around blind people over the years. oh and she always blurted out to strangers that I'm visually impaired.

time is key. it doesnt matter how long it takes the first time. the trick is to be good at being bad at something for long enough to get good at it. That means not beating yourself up, and trying to stay clam, even create a little fun. Sometimes people have trouble understanding that. and that feels hard. even though it isnt fair, we can still help show them the way

This was a great video Cindy. I can’t think of anything you forgot and you made some really good points. I can officially relate to the whole people always willing to step in whenever I’m trying to open the door with the key, and the frustration when people are waiting at a crosswalk and I can’t figure out where the car is going and they can’t figure out why I’m not going.

Lol. I hate that feeling at cross walks, when you don’t know who is supposed to go first. It’s so anxiety provoking and I know many people in the community just a think I am an idiot or something. Oh well.

I know right, anxiety inducing indeed. You would think people in the community would know why though he said you’re pretty vocal about being visually impaired.

Great video Cindy. You brought up excellent points, and great tips for our sighted allies. Very well spoken. I always find it very awkward when I’m in a crowd of people, and I’m trying to talk to a group of people, and I’m not sure of who is around me. It definitely helps to have people identify themselves by name, so we know is with us. Can’t wait for your next video.

"ViP" seems like an artificial term to me. I'm legally blind. Questions are fine, but apology is usually unnecessary. I've had people ask other people with me what I need.

  • @SeeingBlind

I agree, I am never looking for an apology, or for anyone to feel sorry for me. Generally, I agree also, in that questions should be encouraged and we have the choice to answer or not answer. Regardless, it’s the best way to have open communication regarding our needs, accommodations, comfort, level, boundaries, etc. Thank you so much for your comment and response to the video!
