How To Have The Thinnest Rx Lenses

Тәжірибелік нұсқаулар және стиль

Optics and aesthetics are my highest priority when crafting your lenses. That is usually the reason people ask me to make their glasses. I'm going to maximize my efforts and use every tool in my arsenal to make sure their lenses are as beautiful and as perfect as they could ever be..... Ever! Ever!
It's Your Progressive Lens Expert! You have a high near-sighted eyeglasses prescription and today I show you some techniques that you should coordinate with your optician so that you can end up having the thinnest lenses you could possibly have.
Most opticals owners, whenever they need employees on their sales floors, they hire them but they (optical owners) don't provide special training for optimizing myopic prescriptions on their customer's or patient's frames.
The opticals, they just want to sell you the most expensive highest index of refractions without considering any of the tips that I'm going to share with you today. So, you end up spending a lot of money, but your lenses are never as thin as they could possibly be.
Keep in mind, all of these techniques that I will share with you today, they're going to be for myopia as well as frames that have frames all the way around the orbital of the lens.
Tip #1 - Try to match your total Pupillary Distance to the Frame PD as close as possible.
When you choose frames that have a higher wrap and then you insert the flat lens into it, it's not compatible so when you force the frame to now fit the flatter bevel, the temples are going to flare out. So you don't want frames and temples that are going to be flaring out like this, because they are not going to fit well and they're going to be constantly falling off of your face.
Next tip works really great, also. Order lenses that are Digitally Crafted, or in other words; free-form lenses.
Free-form lenses are digitally crafted lenses that are not molded, they are also not crafted by a diamond encrusted wheel. It is actually a diamond tip that carves point by point the prescription onto the back surface of the lens and they flip it and then they use it to carve the front surface of the lens, as well.
Now, these lenses have a high degree of customization which not only has the lenses looking great and thinner. So when you're looking through it, you have great contrast sensitivity and just overall the best optics possible.
What is special about these digitally crafted lenses is that we're able to now take measurements that you otherwise can't incorporate into the design of the lens.
There's three added measurements that ad to the quality of the optics. One of them being the Curvature of the Frame, the Pantoscopic Tilt (which has to do with how high or how low your ears are), and last the Vertex Distance (which is the distance from your Cornea to the lens itself). So all of these measurements are taken in the wearing position and therefore compensate the lens to have a prescription that's accurate to the 1/100ths of a Diopter.
And the last tip of How to Make or Make Your Lenses More Thinner Than Ever:
To Polish or Not To Polish that is the Shakespearean Dilemma that we put to rest today.
Weird Huh? How the color of the frame would influence the decision, Hmmm.
So you polish your lenses, only when the frame is going to be shiny. This is a great example because it is a crystal color, but it's shiny. A second example of a shiny finish on the frame: that is when you polish it.
When do you not polish the lenses? It's when you have a matte finish. These two examples are matte finishes, so you don't polish the lenses. And when frames share both characteristics so both shiny and matte finish or there's any question above, then that's when you comment below, tell me more about it and we can come to a great conclusion together. Or...Flip A Coin! Just Kidding!

Choose frames with smaller lenses. The smaller the lenses, the lighter they are. Smaller lenses are also thinner, even for the same diopter. Choose frames with rounder lenses, because with more rectangular lenses, the corners are further from the center. The lenses can get pretty thick there. Don't use bifocals or progressives. They work against your efforts to get smaller lenses. Alternatives are multiple pairs of glasses, mono vision, or reading glass clip-ons. With smaller lenses, the frame can fit closer to your eyes. Choose frames with smaller vertex. Avoid those with large vertex. If for some reason, your prescription is a high power +ve, choose a larger vertex.

This is the first video from you I’ve ever seen and I want to say that I love your energy. I’ve suffered my whole life with a slightly corrected lazy eye (it drifts off to the left if I zone out or try to focus on tiny details with my right eye because it’s prescriptions is better) but I’ve always wanted to try to fix it completely but being 20 now, I don’t think I can happen :/ Also, my prescription is OD -9 and OS -11 and I wanted to ask if you think that high impact lenses would help reduce my “bug eyes”. It makes me really insecure because I always get weird looks for it and if I could change that, I’d like to :D Thanks for a very educational video!

I wear them around the house to give my eyes a break from my absolutely perfect contact-lenses. But the heavily distorted view through those Coke bottoms causes me nausea and disorientation. Thank you for making this video! I am interested in the lightest lens possible without noticable thickness...I heard a round small frame is helpful however I really prefer an oval rectangle style but still small...mine are 49 mm wide....the ones I am wearing right now feel heavy on my nose...I have the same lens from same company and same frame as before and my prescription only changed in left eye from -4.75 to -5 (have astigmatism in left eye too) (right eye is -4.25) ....and yet they feel uncomfortable...the lenses are high index 1.67 At this point I wouldn't mind if the lenses jutted out a touch so long as I was comfortable....any help or advice? I have been hearing that polycarbonate or trivex is actually lighter then 1.67....I don't even mind if my vision is less sharp. One more thing is I cannot wear contacts as my eyes don't produce enough moisture or I totally would!

    1. don't obsess exclusively on the lens material. So many shops just try to upsell their high index stuff. 2. for a given prescription and lens material, the thickness of the lens depends on it's diameter. 3. rectangular lenses are thickest at the corners because it is at the corners that they are furthest from the center. Oval lenses are thickest at the left/right sides, where they are furthest from the center. Circular shaped lenses are thinnest. Unfortunately they could look odd. 4. bigger lenses are heavier, duh! This is true even if thickness weren't a factor, like if we consider plano lenses. Higher prescriptions makes everything worse. Mine is -6.75. 5. Buy you glasses online. Buy the cheap ones. You don't need the high index multiple coat stuff. Basic no frills stuff are $10-20 a pair. At that price, get 3 or 4 or 5. This is in addition to you expensive "good pair". Choose different designs, different shapes. So that they end up resting on different parts of your face. Wear a different one every day. Leave two on your desk at work. Change them in the middle of the day. For me, the biggest difference is (5). When your glasses are not resting on the same part of your face day-after-day-after-day, different parts of your face get a break to recover.

Man. Wish I had taken all of this into account before getting my latest pair... My PD is narrow for my head. The glasses also tend to sit so that my OC height is relatively high (not in the center). So, despite a -4 prescription, they look like a -10... It sucks. They look bad.

I would love to talk to you personally. I have a pair of glasses that I would love to put a lense in but every store in my state said they couldn't. I have a pair of Oakley Sutros and the lense is basically 1. The middle part is a small pice of glass. I know this won't probably be good for my eyes but I would love for you to give it a try. I can send them out to your office and pay to have them put in. Prior I can show you some photos of the glasses. My only worry is that 1 store told me the glass isn't that big. I was thinking to my self. Can't they just make a bigger glass? Idk but I would love to hear back from you.

Contact lenses are a great idea. Keep in mind to always have a pair of eyeglasses that you could put on in the event that you get and eye infection. it's always good to give your eyes a rest from contact lenses towards the end of the day and on weekends. Go and see your local optometrist and they will help you

Have worn -20 contacts for 30 years with no infections. Make sure you clean your lenses daily. Don't sleep overnight with them in your eyes. Limit naps you take with your lenses in your eyes to short naps (less than an hour). Get annual routine eye check-up and see your retinal specialist about once every two years. Cheers!

The biggest pain for me is my PD is on the smaller side (55) so pretty much no matter what I end up with thicker outer edges (but thinner inner ones at least.) I'd be better off with a child's frame lens wise but they're too small for my adult sized head. The large frames seems super popular right now, but man they make my outer edges thick, even at 1.67. I've noticed small and round is the way to go but I don't like the smaller viewing area.

  • @eyewearrepublic9820

Hi! and thank you for your question. My secret to making the thinnest + power lenses has been to ask for the flattest base curve possible. Ask for a 4 or a 6 Base, depending on how good your optician's lab is, they'll be able to do it. The smaller the frame you choose, the better chance you will have at having thinner lenses. In + powers, the center is always the thickest part so if you pick a large frame, the center has to be even thicker than necessary to be able to have an edge that is strong enough to fit the size of the orbital of your frame. I hope this helps. Thank you

If you had narrow set eyes (you don't) it would not be as optimized. Thumbs Up on your PD Measurements! Pick frames that are big enough, fit well, and are proportionate to the size of your head and face, while avoiding any frames that are bigger than necessary.
