How to Have a Great Accent as a Witness in Mock Trial

Lots of witnesses in mock trial utilize accents to improve their performance. Some do it really well, and others actually wind up lowering their scores because of a poor accent. So, to make sure you don't wind up in the second category, we're going to go over four rules for utilizing accents at a high level as a witness in mock trial.

Just a note for everyone, check the rules for your competition; in my state accents are not allowed

What a GREAT point! Always, always check your competition’s rules. I’m curious what state you’re from?

The ABSOLUTE most abused and misused accent I hear in mock trial is a southern accent. It’s rarely accurate to any southern dialect, and it usually sounds like a Saturday Night Live sketch making fun of Gone with The Wind. I’d say a Brooklyn accent is the second one I see that rarely works.

PREACH! That's why you only need to use an accent if it's authentic. It's so obvious--and hard to listen to--when it's not.
