Thank you so much for this video! I'm incubating for the first time and thought it was taking too long for the chicks to hatch after they started rocking and peeping. Now I'm no longer anxious but excited and hopeful ❤️

@Farm Mom I have some questions: 1. If I have a chick that has hatched and is really weak should I remove it or leave it in with the other chicks? 2. while the chick is in the egg can you tell if its a hen or a rooster? 3. When the chicks are put in the brooder do they establish a pecking order? 4. If I have a egg that has piped and struggling to hatch should I assist it with hatching? 5. Should I candle the eggs to see how the chick is developing? 6. If there’s a chick who is struggling to feed should I mash up a bit of chick food with some water and assist feed the chick with a syringe? 7. Should I weigh the eggs to see how far they are developing? 8. What’s the age of the chick when it starts to grow feathers? 9. When the chicks are put in the brooder should I change the bedding every day? And lastly 10. If I had a chick hatch with a deformity like a crooked neck or leg should I try to raise it to adulthood and also try to correct the deformity?

Hi Shellie! I just watched your video of all your baby chicks you hatched out! They're so cute! Brings back memories of my childhood! My grandparents raised me and they had chickens. I always loved the baby chicks. When I was about 5 years old, my brothers and I got Easter baskets full of dyed chicks, all different colors! They weren't allowed to dye chicks after that because the dye could harm them. I just 💘 loved my Easter basket that year! Baby chicks always bring that memory back to me. Out of that basket of chicks I ended up having a pet chicken that stayed with me like a puppy. She always laid triple yolk eggs. She was some kind of huge white chicken. I enjoyed your video very much!💜

Awe, those baby chicks are sure cute! I hope the rest of the eggs in your incubator hatch. When I was growing up, Mom and Dad bought baby chicks (broilers) from a local hatchery every spring. One year we got a little white one that didn't grow fast like the rest of them did. I claimed her as my pet, mom and dad didn't have the heart to butcher 'Cluck Cluck'. She started laying eggs and finally had to give her away to a neighbor who had a hen house. Thanks for reminding me! 🐥

Hi there, I had to find a post that would let me comment. I have the exact incubator, borrowed from a friend. 20 viable eggs on day 13, looking good. Said friend dropped off 2 turkey eggs to put in his incubator on Sunday. Now I have 2 calendar's going. PROBLEM: I can not get humidity stabilized. I filled the troughs, put small Tupperware of water and then finally added 4 sponges, 1 at a time. Humidity stayed around 30. Yesterday it was at 50, 55 and today is at 68. We did have rain come in over night. Argh!!!! I'm just really worried I won't be able to get it high enough for lock down. Help!!! Any suggestions.

Thanks for watching! When first starting your incubator prior to putting the eggs in, yes you can use warm water. (Not hot). Give your incubator anywhere from 24-48hours to come to the temperature and humidity that you desire. If you have hatching eggs in the incubator already, try to add water as close to the temperature that your incubator is currently reading. The biggest thing to avoid is large temperature spikes or decreases. Good luck!

@@farmmom7140 thank you for replying, I was wondering due to the conflicting results I've heard from others about laying the eggs on their side vs standing them up during lockdown. Have you ever tried standing them up during lockdown to see if it changes hatch rate? Oh and for the ones with bum legs, sometimes if splinted together early enough they can recover and walk normal after a day. Its called spraddle leg I think, had a few chicks come out this way and I used a 1/2 piece of a plastic straw and a small rubber band through it to help keep the legs close together but at correct distance, another method is to use that self sticking horse bandage material to loop around legs and pinch the material to itself between the legs.

Unfortunately I’ve tried a few times for my girls to hatch their eggs, they get so close them the eggs end up squished.

Yes! We only hatch when our hens go broody.

My hens were too lazy to sit themselves 😂 Not ready for the commitment of children, I guess.

I have a black hen and a black rooster. They just hatched their first chick and it's yellow! Is that normal? I was expecting a black chick

Thanks for watching! Do you know the breeds of the hen and rooster? The chick will start to get its true color starting at about week 3 when it starts to get its pin feathers. Yes, normally you would see a darker chick. The hen and rooster could be crossed with something else that was lighter. Keep me posted!

If they are Easter Eggers they can range in color. The one determining fact is that they will have puffy cheek feathers.

Thanks for watching! The lasted I've had a chick hatch is day 24. That's assuming that all the fertile eggs were put in on the same day of incubation.

@Farm Mom I had a friend who had a unnoticed clutch of 7 eggs hatch inside their large chicken coop he noticed it when he let them out they look so cute following mum around the large wire fenced area but my friend had noticed the Barred Rock/Leghorn cross rooster Mr Cockodoodles who’s the big boss of the large flock has been jumping up onto a feeder and eying off that particular hen with the chicks for a while and then he suddenly jumps down and makes a beeline towards her the chicks noticed what was going on and huddled up against her and she squatted down on them with her wings and tail covering them up and Mr Cockodoodles jumped on her back and held her by the neck feathers and attacking her with his spurs trying to mount her the mother hen was crying out and her chicks were chirping loudly he was trying to kill the chicks and breed with her my friend got a broom and pushed him off of her and away from her the poor traumatised hen laid there with beak open panting with her chicks huddled under her and this isn’t the only incident involving him the first Rooster that used to watch over the flock was overthrown and killed by Mr Cockodoodles and he took that role of being top bird.
