Finally someone showing the right way to hang a door! I have seen so many screwed up pre-hung doors!
Nice job ! Not the way I learned, but I think I may try this next time, I can see some advantages.
Henrick, I appreciate your perfectly paced and detailed instruction. Thank you for sharing your years of experience! A well hung door is indeed a thing of beauty, and I too know the satisfaction in that first perfect click of the latch. Having restored many old homes, and rehung lots of doors…Even years later, I get a good feeling stepping through a door that I’ve squared up and hung plumb.
Great instructions that I should be able to follow after I get a lot more shims. Thank you!

Herrick has a good video on how to cut your own shims.

Thanks Herrick. I've installed a few prehung split jamb doors, but I've never been happy with the end results. I'm going to have to give your method a try the next time I need to install a door.
I actually tried this method today, had 9 doors to hang and I hung 5 of them. I think it’s a pretty nice method to get both sides plumb on both axes, often times when the opening is out of square and you preassemble the door frame you can have one side plumb but the other side needs adjustments and with this method you can eye it with the door on and shim as needed
Thanks for all the detail. Door looks beautiful from here in SW Indiana.
Another very useful overview to do something that is a thing of beauty. BTW try pre-stain/wood sealer/dewaxed shellac before staining to even out the absorption.

I used the dewaxed shellac to seal, then a gel stain. My first time with that combination. I’m not really satisfied with the way it turned out. 😕

Oh yes - gel stain and I have a love/hate relationship. I got a nice finish recently on some large picture frames with a couple very thin layers of gel stain over dewaxed shellac on bare hickory. I then put on briwax clear and they came out really nice.
excellent video, thanks
I NEED SIX DOORS PUT ON MY HOUSE (OUTER) AND CAN'T FIND ANYONE TO DO THE WORK. THAT IS PITIFUL. IF I WERE YOUNGER I'D ATTEMPT THAT, BUT LOL I'M NOT. THANKS

Doors are tricky to get right. If you can’t find anyone and have to do them yourself, just make sure to start on the least visible one. You’ll get better and learn more each time.
Well, I've hung my last door without first slotting the shims. Who said an old man can't learn new tricks? Thank you, Herrick....
Thanks again man, ya wouldn’t believe, cheers man,
Hi Herrick, I find this entire process amazing (and exhausting for my non-carpentry mind). Curious: your final door is beautifully stained (and painted?) At what point did you stain it? when everything is already adjusted? if so, how could you get to the corners, top and bottom? I would have loved to see that process.

Hi Dorothy, After hanging the door I removed it, took off the hinges and put it over sawhorses to finish. The door was stained and has three coats of clear polyurethane. Then I put the hinges back on and put the door back in place. I don't feel qualified to show the process because it's not something I've done a lot of and I'm not really satisfied with the way the stain turned out. In fact, I actually sanded the first stain off and started all over. It looks good enough but the color is not uniform. There are light and dark areas. I'm hoping that as the wood ages the color will become more uniform. I think it will. The polyurethane I used was an excellent and unusual product called PolyWhey. The whey ingredient is a byproduct of cheese-making. I may do a video about the PolyWhey someday. Details here: vermontnaturalcoatings.com/learn-about-polywhey/
Cool.
What a silly process to hang a door.
