Interesting video. I'm sure this does happen but it surprises me somewhat. I was trained in conducting interviews for our graduate intakes, & we were careful to put the interviewee at ease. We asked searching questions to test their skills, capacity, etc, but never in a confrontational or aggressive manner. In fact, for legal reasons (Australian employment law), we had to be careful of potential recourse for possible accusations towards the company of eg. discrimination, to the extent that interviews were heavily documented & very often done in pairs. But your advice is equally applicable for meetings or presentation settings where you can face aggressive behaviour - maintaining the same tone & not visibly reacting, and remaining confident in your presentation is important.

Hi Heinrich, massive supporter of your channel; I am starting my undergraduate studies this coming fall and am very interested in the consulting space! You had mentioned the value of seeking leadership opportunities while in university, but leadership in a wholistic sense is a very broad term. I'm curious what specific leadership qualities and characteristics you feel are the most valuable within the consulting industry, especially when starting off. Thanks, Nick :)

Super happy to hear you like the videos :) As a student, I would probably look out for leadership opportunities in social organizations / university organizations in your area, pick something that you are really passionate about and try to create an impact. In general, I would see leadership as a student as opportunities where you can "create an impact together with other people". This will often be a great and enriching experience and for sure help you later in your professional life. Best! Heinrich

Hi Patrick, thanks for your comment! Yes, will create more content on meeting behavior in the future, stay tuned :) Usually there is a trade-off between top-down communication and "storytelling" in meetings. Especially in situations where the issue at hand might be controversial and you know that not everyone at the table shares your view, it might make sense to go for a more sensitive approach, starting with some arguments etc. instead of going full top-down. Heinrich, good stuff! Could you maybe make a tutorial on how to write good business reports (best practices, structure etc.) or board papers? And maybe something on business writing in general? I think that's a crucial skill, right?

Hi Heinrich, great videos! I was wondering if you got some insights on how to get into consulting with work experience. Most people I know in consulting went right into it after uni. Though I've been working at my current firm for 5 years, while doing my Bachelors at the same time. Now I'm thinking of breaking into consulting, but haven't done any apprenticeship experience during Uni nor a Masters degree.

Overall though it is absolutely possible. Just got a stressful interview. I didn’t know it was that, I didnt expect it. Here in Illinois, the Chefs were so hostile and even smirking amongst each other and giggling. Asking fire fast questions and even at some point giving me answers and saying “I’m giving you answers here, pick one..” Stay chill. I kept my composure, slowed down with my speed of talking, and answered them confidently and loud, mo matter how much they gave me. I pushed through it and welcomed it. Kept my smile and took control of the conversation. All the way through. Take control of the conversation.

Hello and thank you for the video! In one of my consulting interviews I had a question on why I selected the specific office out of all the firm has worldwide. I trained my answer with a coach beforehand and I think it made sense, however the interviewer took the answer unexpectedly negatively and started to question every single word - I handled the questions without stress but I could see the interviewer was not satisfied, and eventually the whole interview went not good after that question. How would you handle such situations when you can see that interviewer is not happy with what you are saying?

Hi Veronika, thank you for your comment! Interesting that you can already see this video given that it is actually scheduled to go live this Saturday 😅 Even better to hear that you liked it. Indeed regarding the office choice, some firms are a bit sceptical when candidates apply to offices far away from their home base. Some offices are also significantly more competitive than other (e.g., in many firms: London, Singapore, Silicon Valley, Switzerland..) and the firms try to prioritize local candidates. Apparently the interviewer just did not perceive your answer to be convincing. Hard to give general advice on how to still turn the interview around. You could have signalled that you would be open to join other offices as well, though based on the firm this might require you to enter a different recruiting process. In any case, would not overanalyze this, weird things happen all the time and it is not necessarily your fault. Lots of success to you in the future!! Best, Heinrich

@@FirmLearning Hast du eigentlich schonmal ein Video zum Thema requirements und optimaler Weg in die Beratung gemacht? Habe jetzt noch nicht den ganzen Kanal durchforstet, sondern bin erst seit kurzem da. Mochte gerne ab dem 1. Semester schon alles optimal machen, ohne mich groß zu stressen im Nachhinein.

I'm at a point in my career where I typically don't *need* the job I'm interviewing for. If someone asked me a question like that I would likely respond with "we'll get to that in a moment (insert first name of interviewer) but first I have to ask. Do you always frame your interview questions so poorly?"

@@FirmLearning eventually, as a candidate, you get to the point where the interview is more for you than the company. I could leave where I'm at now and be happily accepted by nearly all of our competitors. Being hostile to a candidate for any reason is a serious red flag for me and if they did so I would automatically write them off. They would have effectively eliminated themselves from *my* selection process.
